I'm obsessed with the whole firing procedure. 1 .Loading shell, (Breach closes automatically) 2. Firing, (massive explosion, breach kicks back) 3. Empty shell casing is being ejected automatically when breach is coming back. 4. immediately new shell is reloaded,(Breach closes automatically) etc.
@@FIntyMAcC10 Yes it was the 88 and 105 both where AA guns that was their primary purpose but their anti tank capabilities where discovered during the war
Fighter planes and bombers were armored. The full name is "8.8 cm Flak". Flak stands for Flug-Abwehr-Kanone, which translates to Flight-Defense-Canon, or more common ANTI AIR GUN. Watch your language.
Unlikely. Tough to beat America with two oceans to protect us. If Britain and France hadn't screwed up-OTOH-and guarded the Ardennes gap-tragedy could have been avoided. Similarly, if Stalin had modernized his air force, and not pissed off Finland, the Ukrainians and Baltic states (in the latter case by conquering them) and driven Bulgaria, Hungary, and Romania into Hitler's arms, he may not have gotten as far as he did.

Or also speaking Japanese. All that was required was for Japan to lay off from Hawaii and invade siberia from the east in coordination with Germany invading from the west. USA and Canada would be surrendering in less than one week .Next the whole world.
My dad saw combat in WWII on the German-Belgian border during the Ardennes Offensive. He was part of a mechanized cavalry group. He would say that soldiers while walking often times adopted the "88 crouch" in which they were leaning forward. They wanted to be that slight bit closer to the ground when fire came from an unseen 88.
T Davies, thank you for your imput regarding your Dad, my Dad was also Involved in North West Europe, but it seems we have some Fools that want to poke fun of those times, these are idiots that think it's fun to see your mates killed in action, hope you don't have an idiot comment on your story.
I’m sure that any sensible person walking on the battlefield crouched as much as possible. Not just 88s - snipers, MG-42 bursts. By the time you heard it, it was too late.
Does anyone know if the sound is actually an 88mm? I have a CD with the sound of guns from the American Civil War and I assume there are similar sound banks for WW2 if people bothered to go to that much trouble.
The rate of fire they could achieve was pretty scary. Its no wonder when combined with the armour penetration that it was so deadly against massed armour attacks.

The beauty of this gun is that it is able to shoot flat accurately as well as vertical. Usually firing level will make the projectile sail from ground effect. Very versatile and way ahead of its time.

Except that the MG-34 was a more refined weapon than the MG-42: more solidly built and accurate. But the 42 was cheaper and simpler to assemble and also had a higher firing rate (not that it mattered much, since sustained fire was impractical for more than a few seconds per burst).
@@sirrathersplendid4825 it was on design a higher fire rate, it is Made so it is impossible to run through, a very smart design if you consider all the target rich environment the germans were in.
@@keeshans5768 - Better for shooting at aircraft because of the firing rate. That much I can agree with. However, both the MG-34 and -42 were pretty inaccurate unless on a tripod mount.
The American technicians from the Aberdeen Proving Grounds researched the high velocity weapons of Germany after the war. They came to the conclusion that U.S. arms manufacturers should have taken a bigger interest in “high velocity “.

PengstirbKuchen Yes, they’re very loud. The higher the powder charge the louder it is. We always just put our fingers in our ears but sometimes when a multiple round Fire Mission came down we were moving so fast loading that you couldn’t always do it. My uncle who was missing in action in holland for 2 weeks in a field hospital with amnesia and later had one of his legs shot off at the knee said " those 88s were a nasty gun".
THE SOUND IS FAKE. EVERYTHING WAS FILMED BY THE NAZI PROPAGANDA, THIS IS NOT WHAT THE GERMAN ARMY REALLY LOOKED LIKE. This old crappy video is making views only because RU-vid deleted all other war archive videos like it. They're a lot of guns that are not the flak 88 and the repetitive sound is terrible, I know it.

@@StarWarsExpert_ Any number of factors, really. RU-vid has been on a crusade against a plethora of things even vaguely "non-kosher", shall we say. Guns, German military songs/history/equipment, etc. Hell, they probably even hate this in particular due to the number "88".
Flak 18 (the original 88mm) was used on ground targets as far back as the Spanish Civil War, years before WWII. The Wehrmacht knew exactly what it could do against tanks. They didn’t roll into combat with armour piercing shells by accident.
please do not judge us all and please consider: the young men back then only had two options - you fight or you will be shot immediately. May our Grandfathers rest in peace. Regards from Germany.

T-34 were not disliked this video. They just came to Germany and made huge holes wherever they could and could not. Including in these "terrrrrrible" guns. Т-34 не ставили дизлайки. Они просто приехали в германию и проделали огромные дыры везде, где было можно и нельзя. В том числе, и в этих "ужжжжасных" пушках.
A truly devastating weapon. My grandfather was on the receiving end of those 88's in Bastone during the battle of the Bulge. 3rd army, 4th armored division . I remember him telling me stories about that. When I asked him what was the worst part of that battle I remember him saying "The bitter cold & those G-D damn 88's!

impressive short reloading time of the 88mm cannon. It is a precision weapon with a longest effective range (at that time) of 14860 meters. No allied tanks can withhold a 88mm round.
Late war IS2 could bounce a shell frontally at longer ranges 1000m+. It's why the Germans eventually upgraded the 88 to the KwK43. Standard 88 tore through everything the UK and the US had.
The 88mm found its neish as an anti tank gun on the Eastern Front. It was the only weapon that could stop the Soviet T34 in its tracks. T34 had sloping armour which the Wermacht found to be a major combat issue. While the T34 armour was actually 30mm, but when sloped at 30degrees it became 100mm thick with added slope proving impervious to other German anti tank artillery.
Germans did later improvised the existing Panzer iv model by equipping it with a 75 mm long high velocity barrel that enabled it to be on equal terms with t34. Pak 40 is also another cheap but highly effective tank killer that was mass produced on the eastern front.
@@angelamagnus6615 Yes, that's right they did. The bigger let down for the Soviet Armoured Units was the lack of suitable radio equipment to allow them to organise better mass armoured movements. The Wehrmact were the premium tank warfare force by the time they invaded Russia.

Ivan, thank, you for the reply, yes I was commenting on the German 88mm flak gun, which was used in many guises during WW2.The reason was my Dad was in the Royal Artillery, and landed in Normandy at Arromanches,on Gold Beach,in June 1944,he was in action straight away with a 9.2 inch heavy field piece, and during the campaign was shelled by German Artillery several times, usually by this 88mm weapon,on one occasion, the gun next to my Dads gun was hit,all the gunners were killed some shrapnel flew across to the gun my Dad was on,and killed 2 of the gunners, with another 3 wounded,my Dad said he was very lucky that day,he was adamant that the 88mm was the best artillery gun of the war, extremely accurate, quick firing and mobile! He was present at the huge barrage that opened up at 22.00 and finished at 05.00,to cover the Rhine Crossings. He said there were a thousand guns firing continuously during that period! The 88mm had a distinctive sound, very easily recognized by the Royal Artillery gunners,as it was a very high velocity weapon.Hope this has been useful to you Ivan? Good Luck.
The 88 had British tankers scared in the western desert that they would even move forwards until the infantryman had silenced them. The Brits military had 3.7 inch anti aircraft guns too but never allowed them to be used like the Jerry 88mm.

The English word, "flak", comes from the German abbreviation for "anti-aircraft gun" ("Flak" from "Fliegerabwehrkanone", literally "aircraft defense gun" ). In English of course it didn't really come to mean the guns themselves, but the results of the guns in the air, as allied planes experienced their exploding shells. Today in English "flak" can also mean "serious criticism", as in "to receive flak" from someone for some reason.
Flight interception canon is propably the straight translation abwehr means preventive measure and in these instances against tanks and airplanes (PAK-Panzerabwehrkanone)
The notorious 88 anti aircraft artillery or AAA was highly effective against Allied planes. It was more deadly than the American 90 mm artillery. The 88 can be mounted on a tank or used as an anti tank gun or against buildings.
Hubert Kaiser, thanks for the reply, danka, my Father was under fire from this gun, and he said it was the best gun ever! Very accurate and quick firing!
It was one of the first times people realized an anti-air weapon could be used on land-based targets. Even today many anti-air weapons are used on the battlefield as fearsome anti-infantry weapons. People don't really talk much about it.
The legend does'nt lie.... my Dad was Flakhelfer @ "08", was told me near Passendorfer Wiesen between Halle/Leuna. He was a joung boy from high scool.... like how men of his friends in the war.
They should have focused on building more of these and good tanks instead of all kind of silly super weapons but it's okay Germany nowadays is an economic superpower
This is not some wunderwaffe super weapon, the German Army had already being using the 88mm gun since WW1, later they modified it to target tanks, not just aircraft.
