I wanted a dust shoe that have a easy access to tool change and something that kind of float on the surface. And I have seen shoes with long brush that sucked in by the vacuum. I think I have the solution too all that here. My DIY Floating Dust Shoe How To video.

Geoff Sims I'm glad you like it, it works really well and it always has contact with the material even if I use longer end mills. I see a lot of people running with their shoes far above the surface. It should not be as effective I guess.

Love the design! I am in the process of making one of these and was wandering: the lowest (brush) layer moves freely around the spindle so its hole should be mush bigger than the diameter of the spindle. Is this correct? For a 65mm spindle, what should be my brush and middle layer hole size? Thanks!
@CNCSwede
@CNCSwede 6 лет назад
I got the same width on all three. My chuck isn’t so wide so it interferes with my dust shoe. I hope to see some pictures when you are ready with the shoe 😊
@gilcd85

First of all - thanks! I have all three parts cut and was able to get the rubber dust boot so it's really a matter of assembly now. I think I understand the mechanics now: the two upper parts sit on the spindle while the lower part with the brush hangs in the air around the chuck. That's brilliant! Where should I post the pics?

So 1.81 inches is the max depth you can cut? Seems like that may be more a function of the brush length or am I thinking about this wrong? I thought of a couple more questions: 1. is it possible the boots hit an angle that they make contact with the spindle/bit? 2. if the dust shoe catches on something, it will detach from the magnets and make contact with the spindle? Is there any type of latching that prevents this?
@CNCSwede
@CNCSwede 6 лет назад
Hi Ben! I thought it was the bit length that worried you in your last question? The clearance under the z-axis is almost 5 inches on my machine, but if I had material so thick the shoe have contact anyway if you understand? 1. Either the brush or the boot can contact the bit in my design, that’s the reason of my design actually. If you add longer brush without the boot the brush will contact the bit. 2. If you look at my video you see the three pins that prevent that.

@bengeiser3646
@bengeiser3646 6 лет назад
How do you set this up for bits that vary in length? For instance, the difference between a v-groove bit and a .25" end mill can be a couple inches. Great design though, I am designing a boot right now taking your lead.
@CNCSwede
@CNCSwede 6 лет назад

Looks a great design Erik. How is it performing after all these years? I am thinking of adding a 4th layer to accommodate long and short brushes and, in our case possibly brush layers for wood and other materials separately.
@CNCSwede
@CNCSwede 5 месяцев назад
Thanks! 😊 It works great. After the video was made, there are a couple of things I should have done differently. The part with the brushes would have a bevel so it would slide up if it hit something. And the acrylic I built it from I got from a friend. I didn't know at the time that it was so expensive, so it might as well have been built from MDF or Baltic birch.

Good work. What is the reason for using clear expensive acrylic instead of wood? you cannot see the tool bit anway. Also, no dust shoe works for all application, I can see yours will catch the workpiece as it drop down below the workpiece if the workpiece is thick and narrow enough.
@CNCSwede
@CNCSwede 4 года назад
Vincent Doan Thanks! I can se some of the working area but the main reason was that I got 3 square meters of 10mm acrylic from a friend for free. 😉 I’m planing to make a new improved dustshoe in MDF with a circular “window” of thin acrylic because it’s easier to buy for most people. And the improvement has with the catch issue to do, but since I did this shoe it’s happened only once 😊
@amazoncanvas
@amazoncanvas 4 года назад
@@CNCSwede Better yet, make one that can adjust the height to always a bit above the material so you can see the bit cutting it. This is not easy to to because you need to have a distance sensor to get the current distance between the tool bit and the material, and then adjust the shoe accordingly. Of course, you also need a motor to dynamically adjust the shoe's height.
@CNCSwede
@CNCSwede 4 года назад
Vincent Doan Well now a bit of acrylic plastic became cheap in comparison and its not so important for me to see the bit 😉

@@CNCSwede 😁 I see it works very well from your video of making a riser plate spacer for your Dodge Challenger! Thank you for posting this! I have a large DIY CNC that I use to cut some very dusty materials. My current dust Shoe does not float and many times sits too high above the material and is nearly useless. I use Bosch Colt and DeWalt 611 routers which are larger in diameter than a usual spindle, but with some modifications to overall size and spindle diameter this could work for me I think. The rubber boots could be from a salvaged truck propeller shaft slip joint for very little money, and sometimes free here at Salvage/Junk yards. Seems I need to get busy and make one of these! 😄
@CNCSwede
@CNCSwede 4 года назад

@@CNCSwedeThanks! 👍 I have some 0.357inch/9.07mm Makrolon polycarbonate I will be using. Hard to get good acrylic, I agree. I have it here but mine shatters like glass when dropped, it is beautiful however. The usual unfinished MDF when coated with an oil based clear like Minwax Satin is cheap and very strong. I built my entire CNC router this way. And MDF is available worldwide - My wife used this in furniture construction in the Ukraine. Just an idea. @CNCSwede 4 года назад
John Motschenbacher Hi! Sorry about the delay. I totally missed your comment. Yes I use the shoe all the time! It works over my expectations. The drawback might be the choice of the material, I got a lot of that acrylic and didn’t realise that it was so expensive. So I consider to do a new video and make the shoe out of MDF with a little inspection window in the middle of a thinner bit of acrylic. And it have stuck once in a obstacle so I recommend you to round of the edge on the part with the brush. Try to do something similar to fit your spindle and you have a dust free CNC. Good luck 😊
