Here's my best go at the lyrics: It's Lammastide and I must away love Don't you weep lass for I'll be back When I return you can then rest easy but for now there's no turning back For I'll go raiding in the night love I'll ride loyally with my kin The moon is up and I'm away love for there is vengance and there is gain I know it's hard when I have to leave These deeds and vows have a bloody end but for honour and my family I'd stay with you and the Cattle tennd interlude They came stealing in the night time from Annandale a score or more intent on mischief and our cattle to the torch they put our barns and stores the cry went up a cry for vengence we'll take back what should be ours we'll steal their cattle burn their store sheds They'll rue the day that they raped our land Though the night be as dark as a dungeon and the clouds they hide the moon I will go on this long nights journey for the deed it must be done Chill the night winds dark and dismal as we gather for the ride kiss the children for me Mary the deeds a foot on the Scottish side For I'll go raiding in the night love I'll ride loyally with my kin The moon is up and I'm away love for there is vengance and there is gain Yes I'll go raiding in the night love I'll ride loyally with my kin The moon is up and I'm away love for there is vengance and there is gain For I'll go raiding in the night love I'll ride loyally with my kin The moon is up and I'm away love for there is vengance and there is gain
Not bad, but there were some inaccuracies: LAMMASTIDE and I must away love Don't you weep lass for I'll be back When I return you can then rest easy but for now there's no turning back For I'll go raiding in the night love I'll ride loyally with my kin The moon is up and I'm away love for there is vengance and there is gain I know it's hard when I have to leave These deeds AND VOWS have a bloody end but for honour and my family I'd stay with you and the CATTLE TEND interlude They came stealing in the night time from Annandale a score or more intent on mischief and our cattle to the torch put our barns and stores the cry went up, a cry for vengence we'll take back what should be ours we'll steal their cattle burn their store sheds They'll rue the day that they raped our land Though the night be as dark as a dungeon and the clouds they hide the moon I will go on this long nights journey for the deed it must be done Chill the night winds dark and dismal as we gather for the ride kiss the children for me Mary the deeds afoot on the Scottish side For I'll go raiding in the night love I'll ride loyally with my kin The moon is up and I'm away love for there is vengance and there is gain Yes I'll go raiding in the night love I'll ride loyally with my kin The moon is up and I'm away love for there is vengance and there is gain For I'll go raiding in the night love I'll ride loyally with my kin The moon is up and I'm away love for there is vengance and there is gain Lammastide was the traditional start of the raiding season - the nights had become long enough by then to make them feasible. Very good on the rest of it though! Id always thought it was "raked out land", not "raped our land"...but I think on hearing your version is correct.
Nope - the opening line is It's "LAMMASTIDE and I must away love" - Lammastide was a religious day on the calendar and marked the day that the night was dark enough for the raiding season to begin. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lammas THE FORAY Lammerstide and I must way love, Don’t you weep lass for I’ll be back, When I return you can end the season, But for now there’s no turning back, For I’ll go raiding in the night love, I’ll ride loyally with my kin, The moon is up and I’m away love, For there’s vengeance there is gain, I know it is hard when I have to leave, As deeds of ours have a bloody end, But for my honour and my family, I’d stay with you and the cattle tend, They came stealing in the night time, From Annandale a score or more, Intent on mischief and our cattle, To the torch they put our barns and stores, A cry went up, a cry for vengeance, We’ll take back what should be ours, We’ll steal their cattle and burn their storeships, They’ll rue the day they raped our land, Though the night be as dark as a dungeon, And the clouds they hide the moon, I will go on this long night’s journey, For the deed it must be done, Though the night’s wind is dank and dizzy, As we gather for the ride, Kiss the children for me Mary, The deed's afoot on the Scottish side, For I’ll go raiding in the night love, I’ll ride loyally with my kin, The moon is up and I’m away love, For there’s vengeance there is gain, Yes I’ll go raiding in the night love, I’ll ride loyally with my kin, The moon is up and I’m away love, For there’s vengeance there is gain, For I’ll go raiding in the night love, I’ll ride loyally with my kin, The moon is up and I’m away love, For there’s vengeance there is gain.
I've been looking for "Lock the Door Lariston" from this album, ever since they removed any trace of it from the usual sites. If anyone has a link, I'd appreciate it.
Northumbrian but they're essentially the same especially if you go back in history there's barely a difference between all borderers since why should they have cared about a London-based Norman king?
It's from Northumbrian perspective (Would have been more accurate if it had been sung in a more Northumbrian accent) - but the Reivers didn't give two hoots about either England or Scotland it was all about their families and their allies. Many families lived on both sides of the border. Take the Armstrongs... they lived in Liddesdale, both north and south Northumberland and in south Cumberland. Their allies on the Scottish side were the Elliots, Nixons, Crosiers, Bells etc but on the English they were allied with both the Northumberland bad boys the Charltons, Dodds and Robsons and in Cumberland to the Carletons (Kinmont Willy Armstrong was married to the daughter of the Carlton heidsman and sister of Thomas Carlton, the Constable of Carlisle castle - which is why when he was captured illegally reivers on Truce Day and handed to the English West March warden Lord Scrope, Carlisle castle had no sentries posted when he was lifted out of his cell by Scottish reivers abetted by English reivers such as the English Grahams AND the deputy warden of THE MIDDLE MARCH Lowther (known as Bewcastle - his HQ) who made sure English patrols kept away from the debatable land that night.
