I really want this to start a trend of using 2x120mm coolers on GPUs. It doesn't have to be for an expensive noctua collaboration. It sounds like even average-quality 120mm fans would offer a large improvement over the current GPU cooler situation. Enthusiasts have been modding their cards to do this same thing for years now, it's time for graphics card manufacturers to get the hint and start offering this out of the box.
@FutaNoKami
@FutaNoKami 2 года назад
Would love that too, but i think mainly the issue would be ask and demand. Or the practicality of it. As DerBauwer mentioned in his last video, its a quad slot GPU so you wouldnt be able to use a e.g. wifi card/bluetooth, or USB card etc in your PCIE slots. To make it a marketable item i suppose they should reasearch a actuall % of people that actually use PCIE accesories and look if its worth the effort. But then again... possibly a PCIE riser and vertical mount in a wide case might just do the job too.
@zig131
@zig131 2 года назад
Totally although I would want horizontal fins rather than vertical so the hot air is pushed out the case rather than into the motherboard and side panel. Vertical fins may be better for the GPU itself but it's just straight up selfish to dump it's heat into the case like that.

nah, it increases a lifespan of a GPU so it won't die in 3-5 years and customer won't be really forced to buy a new one (apart from new games demanding a better hardware). so won't happen. but you always can tie any fan to any gpu cooler with zip-ties, the only downside - warranty obligations could be ignored by manufacturer in that case.

From a right-to-repair standpoint this is great, as well as allow for user customization without major modification. There is a ton of things to PCs that I really don't understand. For this issue, it has a lot of things going against it. The slot used for the GPU is typically the first one, and going with a cooler that need 6 slot width to function, like this Asus-Noctua thing, the rest of the slots become unusable. There is no tradition in the industry to shake things up, to keep flexibility while supporting new hardware. Also, using these fans, there is a height limitation in a lot of cases, that prevent this design from being usable. It sort of reminds me about the turtle speed adoption of the dropping of the 5.25" bays.

It took Noctua 20 something years to design a 200mm fan that lived upto their standards for material composition, flex, sound etc. Consider this pairing with a 3070 as a rush job with that redesigned heatsink. If they'd have had 4-5 years to come up with the perfect heatsink to match the A12x25 fans, I'd expect it'd do somewhat better than it already does. Just throwing 120mm fans on a heatsink doesn't necessarily mean it'll actually perform better than what's already there if the heatsink isn't optimized for the differences between the fans capabilities.

Very similar heatsink size to the Raijintek Morpheus after-market VGA cooler (which I'm buying tomorrow when latest pay-check clears). I'd really love it if VGA card manufacturers would release cooler-less cards so we could fit our own coolers without the e-waste, preferably with standard core/mem locations. this kind of design also reduces e-waste by making it easier to swap fans if one happens to break. I like the way that it's more modular; so if a fan fails it's easy to replace, or if the GPU dies or becomes obsolete I'd still be able to easily repurpose the fans. I do think they could probably shave some extra width off the card if they changed the way the fans are mounted. If the fan shroud over the top was omitted and instead the fans were held on by being either mounted to a simple metal plate between the fans and cooler, or a set of bent wire spring clips as many CPU coolers use to mount their fans.

You should do an all Noctua theme build with the Noctua 3070, a D-15, and only beige and brown case fans. I think it would look really cool and be very quiet.

lol can the fan shroud section be mates up to any other Asus cards? .... I mean even if it was just sort of ziptied to a 3080/90 strix card and see the comparison of noise/performance

If an AIB partner were to offer a model with standard 2x 120mm x25mm fan mountings, it would be disruptive. The biggest differentiators between AIBs (that allow them to upcharge massively between SKUs) are the cooler, power delivery, and BIOS. Standardizing the cooler would commoditize that biggest differentiator, potentially hurting profits. All the AIBs are completely selling through their stock, and they have a supply bottleneck with NVIDIA, so I don’t see much of an economic motivation for incumbents to disrupt here. Good for ASUS for doing this! A BYO fan line would be pro-consumer.

I will love to see some aftermarket GPU cooler's from noctua like back days from Gelid and adapted for 120mm fans.

That bracket that fit standard 120mm fans is cool. If use Arctic P12 fans because it's barely as good as the Noctua's but for a lot less money and I can buy more of them. They have a D-RGB version of the P12 now, though it's hard find in stock at the moment.

This is good way to approach the "right to repair" too. Standardized ware parts that can be sourced as you please means ASUS doesn't have to do you anything special :)
@arch1107
@arch1107 2 года назад
right to repair means that if a part is broken or something is damaged in a product you bought, you can take the product to any repair shop to be repaired or if you want to do it by yourself without being forced to do it the manufacturer way the old fans are on sale on internet, you can replace them by unplugging or unscrewing the old unit and installing the new one itx cases will not be able to fit this solution, the gpu is 4 slots, at best, a itx will fit 3 slots gpus if you are lucky so this will work for atx users only, external gpu cases might or might not fir one the fans on any gpu can be removed and replaced with this type of fan, you can even use zipties to put a traditional fan if you have the space, the plastic part can be unscrewed on many gpu models if not all, i even did it on a gt 1030! where your right to repair is being destroyed is on iphones, latest model will not allow you to change a single part, all has to be done by apple directly

Hypno-owl has mesmerized me. 😵‍💫 It's silly, but I really hope that this Noctua card idea to use regular PC fans on an extra-large heatsink catches on for aftermarket coolers. Not every PC enthusiast wants a water block or a LN2 pot.

The Noctua fans I have used as case exhaust and PSU cooling, transduce no additional sound/noise that I can detect, when those isolators are not installed.

The problem most manufacturers make their margin on the cooler, not the gpu so that’s why they don’t sell raw heatsinks i think

i would gladly buy one of these if/when i could just go to newegg or microcenter and buy this for whichever model i wanted. like if this was a 3080 Ti, i think it would be a great choice. Glad Asus is working with Noctua and EK to make new product offerings.

Just wait till Major Hardware finally makes a series on different GPU fan designs by fans (Fan Showdown)! It's gonna be wild! I also agree with the majority of comments that this kind of design should become the norm, since fans are one of the first thing to fail and having easy access to a replacement instead of having to hunt for an exact match (if at all possible to replace) would be amazing. Not to mention being able to pick and choose whether you want to go performance, or silence or RGB or any mix of the above.

if they are 120 mm they will fit in that direction but if they are taller, you will need longer screws i think, would make things more complicated for you

I personally do not like the styling of that card (I do like the brown) but I love the standard fans and fan headers. This would be a nice to have on any cooler. Even using 90mm to get triple fans on a card, It would be nice to plug and play with any 90mm fan.

@der8auer EN could you please mount some thin 120mm fans to this fan shroud? It interesting for me to see what is the difference between "normal" - 25mm thick fans to some slim ones that are typically usend in gpu coolers. I think that not only diameter of the fan is the problem in most of GPU coolers but also thickness.

Great video, shame that Noctua doen't make the NF-A12x25 Chromax black, but personally i would like to see double Phanteks T30-120 on there. It would retain most of the performance but in all black.
