Nice to see a budget-friendly vehicle designed to be really functional. Most others tend to focus on wowing people with a fancy entertainment center and many screens. I think the Maverick will be a home run for Ford. They would sell even more if the hybrid could be had with AWD.
@@bikeman1x11 false a lot of people want them including me! I'm looking at trading my current F-150 in on a maverick hybrid as soon as I can because I don't need a 1/2 ton truck, and the prospect of getting 4x the gas mileage as my truck when I'm going to be stuck on an island where gas prices are going to be ridiculous and speed limits low sound like the perfect vehicle to me!
@@bikeman1x11 Not at all. The hybrids are totally clever and should have great reliability. They will still haul and carry a load as well as many light duty pickups. Then there's the incredible fuel mpg. If this would have been around 10 years ago you would see them all over the place.
Ford may have may have given up on the sedan marketplace but there's no question that they know how to design, build, and sell trucks! The Maverick's most obvious competitor, the Hyundai Santa Cruz, may be an appealing vehicle for consumers wanting an open bed version of a compact SUV but even Hyundai recoils from labelling it a "truck." They call the Santa Cruz is a "Sports Activity Vehicle, an SAV. Not so from Ford. No, Sir-ee. The Maverick wears its "truck" label proudly. From a sales standpoint, the Maverick is a brilliant vehicle. Every trim level is available with a 2.5L hybrid engine or a 2.0L turbo . MSRPs begin at $20K and top out in the low $30K neighborhood. And though it's not often mentioned individual consumers aren't the only source of revenue. The Maverick will sell like hotcakes to fleets, large and small. For businesses that need economical vehicles for local missions involving cargo, the hybrid versions of the Maverick are a godsend. Need to deliver drywall to a construction site? No need to use a full size F150. The hybrid Maverick can do the job at a fraction of the cost.
When I first saw the Maverick my first thought was city fleets. I see City owned trucks all the time, everywhere I go. Suddenly there's a small truck that gets excellent gas mileage, and still offers loads of utility? I wouldn't be surprised if the Maverick dominated the fleet market in the near future. But I was also surprised how much I liked it myself when I got the chance to sit in one. It felt really livable.
I looked at the Hyundai and really didn't like it. Plus, I"m not excited about Hyundai and Kia's engine issues. I'm confident Ford has their bugs worked out because this engine has been used for a while now.
The manufacturer might want to think these cars are budget friendly, but the dealers are adding ridiculous “market adjustment” markups, PLUS dealer fees.
I really like that a XLT Hybrid with the options I want comes it at 25.7k. I don't really need a truck, but the more I see this the more I try to find ways of justifying getting one. Thanks for pointing out the DIY stuff. So much about this car is no-nonsense, and I really appreciate that.
The Maverick is the new Taurus. I mean this in the way that the Taurus SAVED Ford and put American car manufactures on a totally new trajectory. It'll be fun to watch how the other car companies react to it's success. Also, i want to say how exciting it is to see an American car manufacturer making something worth being excited for.
Don't worry Tom, with today's high lumber prices we will soon see 2X4s sold in more afFORDable 4 foot lengths which will be just perfect for this 'truck'. Seeing a cheap and cheerful Ford pickup brings a tear to my eye thinking of all those simple Rangers once made at the Twin Cities Plant in St. Paul, Minnesota, United States of America.
Well done, Tom. And what may be the most important design aspect is how the development team approached the design process. Repetitive user input, draw up/mock up/test up sequences that insured increased functionality - in this case, process was very much product.
and boy are they charging you for basically a light tin car with an abysmally underpowered engine which won’t last five years with average ‘harsh’ abuse
Good look at what seems to be versatile, well-designed vehicle. 18 sheets of plywood sounds great, but the engineer said 1/4 inch, not the far more common 1/2 inch variety. He has a promising career in marketing if this engineering stuff doesn’t work out…
I have a tacoma, I love it, but first thing I tell people is it can not compete with Ford on comfort and features. I buy Toyota because they dont believe in planned obsolescence. It will last a long time, but it literally has 1/10th of the features of the same level trim ford
@@triggeredtroll6466 I was referring to the hybrid drive unit. Toyota tries to go head to head with the big 3 but they could’ve done something like the Maverick years ago with their drivetrain expertise.
@Yolo Burrito Absolutely, and they could have charged more because it's Toyota. Now, however, Ford has undercut them and so any future kind of truck by another company will need to be more innovative.
We love ours.... but FORD... please listen... YOU FAILED by not having XM and SYNC on all trims available. $31k vehicle with Lux option and no XM radio. That is silly. Are you listening FORD.
@@jonathanchandler2005 Ordered mine in October. NO idea when I'll see it. I probably should have ordered two, then I could sell the other one for over MSRP.
@@timjohnson1199 I ordered mine mid July and got it early November. There’s a crazy amount of orders for them but they are starting to ramp up production. Hopefully yours gets scheduled soon
The interior design guy was great. I sensed absolutely no bullshit, and very sensible. "console turns into a garbage can" "Stop making things out of plastic to look like leather" Agreed. It's not leather, it's cheaper. Deal with it. Thank you.
Thanks for the deep-dive on this product. I think it will be very successful for the brand and it's obvious they spent a lot of time in development for a car that will be very affordable to a wide demographic. People are walking away from wagons for vehicles like this now whereas a few decades ago they were odd ducks. Remember the Subaru Brat? Now we have the Maverick (which was a car!) and Santa Cruz too which is great for those looking for an alternative to the typical SUV solution. My two niggles are the infotainment screen (which looks like an afterthought) and the headlights which look bargain-basement in design and execution. Otherwise, Ford got this right.
Said it before and I'll say it again. Just what I need. A Zero motorcycle in the back (sub 500lbs) plugged in, go to the lake house, charged bike. I'm gonna retire my venerable 1971 Dodge D100 (21mpg highway/city) and carry on.
I really want to save up for a Maverick, im usually not a truck person but from what I've seen in person, it's size is perfect for what i would do with it! I would definitely be happy with the base model and Ford's tool box option.
The guys who designed the maverick did wayyy better than most auto designers. The interior functionality is so important. And I see so many stupid choices from other designers. This one JUST MAKES SENSE. MY ONLY COMPLAINT fan speed dial on the left temp control dial on the right. you can press in the temmp dial to turn it on and off. i think you should be able to press in the more available (being closer to your hand) fan speed dial to turn it off.
Another DIY friendly aspect of this truck is Ford released the FITS geometry to the hobby 3D printing community so there are tons of free designs on the various 3D model repositories across the internet. It was actually this act that brought the Maverick to my attention. I'm in the market for a new vehicle (specifically looking for a hybrid) and am now interested in the Maverick. Unfortunately for me the demand so out stripped availability that Ford stopped taking new custom orders for the hybrids back in November and I only started looking at cars in the past month... I'll have to wait for the '23 model year to customize my own (will be looking to build something similar to the XLT Luxe w/ CoPilot360 and a few other dealer installed options for under $30k).
It would be an amazing truck, if they can deliver in a timely way. Or for that matter deliver them without recalls from the factory. Waited half a year for mine. By the time it was delivered it was on a recall notice. So it waits on the dealer lot while the calendar burns through another month. I'm told backlogged recall part won't take forever, but it sure feels like it.
The biggest issues I see with it right now are the lack of an AWD hybrid option (yes, I understand that Ford almost always holds things back at launch but it seems they REALLY misjudged the demand for the hybrid.) and the current $3,000 to $10,000 dealer markups over MSRP. I'll just wait until the insanity settles down and Ford to get around to offering AWD on the hybrid. (It's available on Escape hybrid so it's just a matter of them adapting it to Maverick.)
11:04 as a 5 ft tall woman who has always been vertically challenged, can confirm i can reach into a maverick over the side. it's great to see ford making a truck that remembers that half the population is women!
That comment about the center console being low to make it feel bigger is a big one. Years ago we went to check out a new Escalade and the center console was so huge we didn't even bother with a test drive. What's the point of a big vehicle that feels cramped? Unfortunately a lot of full size trucks and big SUVs are that way. More space than they know what to do with.
I just went to look at one at my local dealership, was told my entire state is sold out and that they are literally special ordering these trucks now and the waiting period is 4 months. I am amazed it is so popular right now.
Took a year for me but delivered at the exact quoted price 🙄 Great truck. V8, V6 Eco and now a 2.5 hybrid owner. This is my commuter. Shockingly high mpg is achievable.
I love that there are hardly any packages with this vehicle. Try getting a cheap, single cab puckup with a diesel. Oh wait, that's in a $15k trim level, is now lifted and supercabed!
Thank you Tom. Very informative. I have a Maverick on order from my local Ford dealer. There is also an available "camping" accessory for it as well, pretty cool. Didn't know about the "hacks" that Ford built into this vehicle. We can sure use inexpensive options especially right now. KRD
I already was very interested in the Maverick, but this took it to another level. This is absolutely one of the best & most helpful reviews / information videos I've seen. Thank you
Well Done Ford from a non fan! This will definitely give younger people an opportunity $$ for a truck!! If Ford continues everyday consumer needs they can put a hurt on tacoma and ridgeline!! Partner with a tire manufacturer like Michelin and put on some Cross Climate 2 tires and the FWD with those tires will tear up an and or 4wd with regular all season tires!
I was worried at first that you were talking about a different kind of hack. I have my Maverick on order and just waiting for it to come in. I traded my Silverado for it because I just don't need a truck that size anymore. I've waited for a small truck for so long that I'm happy to see Ford fulfill the small truck gap. I loved my 2000 Ranger and it sure earn it's keep. I'm hoping this truck is just as good if not better than that one. I don't know about adding a lot of things to it for now, but I'm glad to see that I can do it at another time.
@@dropz_eleventy I didn't end up getting one. Like most dealers they tried to screw me on the price. I cancelled the order. I still got rid of the POS Silverado. I'm not going to get one in the future. Ford needs to reign in their dealerships behavior (like most companies). I'll drive my prius until I can find a truck that won't be such a hassle to buy
Can't wait to get mine! My build is starting on January 3rd and should take them around a month to build. So I should be seeing it by early to mid-March!
The interior is actually bigger than a Toyota Tacoma. I am 6'1" and 240lbs. I am EXTREMELY comfortable in it! And the heated steering wheel is a great thing I have never had before.
I absolutely love my Ford Maverick! I didn't have a big vehicle budget and I mostly needed a car for commuting but it's been absolutely phenomenal. I impress everyone with it's mpg (hybrid) and flexibility.
The only problem is Ford has forgotten how to manufacture and deliver a vehicle. The other issue is that dealers will hate them. In their minds these are taking away from a sales commission on nice F-150 sale as if the average Joe can afford $65,000 to buy a truck.
I see this as a great truck for service companies, pickup bed, storage, apple carplay, 42 mpg city, 20k. Sounds great if you need 10 trucks for your company! Put a ladder rack on top and a bed topper on with a tool storage system in the back you have a great setup for daily service work for plumbers, electricians, handyman, internet companies, you name it. Maybe even add an eco boost v6 and make a cop car out of it!
If it were truly icy I'd expect it to have poor performance. Would depend on the tires. Also, you shouldn't be out if that's the case, drive to conditions. A rear drive Colorado, Ranger or Tacoma wouldn't be that much better without proper rubber, my Minnesota upbringing taught me that much. But yes, the comparison would be a great video.
I've been looking to replace my 2004 Sport Trac, which Ford stopped making in 2010. I want to keep the drivers door keyless entry combination keypad, tilting tinted moonroof, leather seats, and remote electrick rear mini-window. I have not been to the dealer yet, but is the mini-window on the Maverick only available in a manually opening format? And don't they make a leather seat option package?
@Driven Car Reviews With Tom Voelk understood but still, they are charging $50 for something you can print at home for less than $5 if you have a printer. Those who don't will have to fork out $50 for some injection molded plastic. But thats typical for manufacturer, they make 75% profit on the "after market" accessories. Like floor matts and other stick-on glue-on BS.
I got the front wheel drive Lariat Hybrid model it rides like a little truck but that's ok it gets very good gas ⛽ mileage. Year 2024. But I also have a 2010 F-150 Lariat 😎👍
Can’t understand why they wouldn’t make the read seat fold flat to load stuff on. Flipping up the seat could be fine, if the floor was flat. “Ford Tough”, ha…, I used to sell Fords and I wouldn’t describe them that way.
For me, the two things that just struck me odd about the Hybrid is the plastic valve cover and the extensive use of one time hose clamps. Just seems chincy.
Ur promoted website to compare cars does not have the maverick... im watching a maverick video because im interested in buying one... why would you promote a website in a video of a car that is not in the website???... just wondering 🤔
who uses 1/4inch plywood? at this point just calcalute them in sheets of veneer so you can say it holds 50 sheets. still, the affordability makes this vehicle interesting
How sad you can't really buy them without a huge markup, and the base price has been raised. Ordering is a joke. So many people are waiting a year for their truck.
Went to the local car expo and sat in the Maverick, while I liked it in theory back when they announced it I was kind of surprised by how much I actually liked it. It felt very livable. And while part of me really wants a full sized truck I can tow a massive trailer with, 30 mpg on a hybrid sounds really great too. Could this be my utilitarian truck and my commuter vehicle in one? I don't know, but it's making me rethink my wants and needs a little bit for sure.
Watch your expectations. The 4k tow package is only available on the 2.0l Turbo power plant that has closer to normal ICE mpg. The hybrid power plant only supports up to 2k towing.
