Ngl I would love to see a modern dinosaur fighter that parodies old dinosaur depictions and movies, with today’s tech you could probably make it actually look like a stop-motion film. And of course add Spinofaarus as a secret unlockable fighter.
Dude, I would love a game like this, I would put modern dinosaurs too, with feathers and stuff, like a different faction, and old movie looking dinosaurs against the modern looking dinosaurs. I would call the game "Dinos vs Saurus"
The goofy running animation on the triceratops is supposed to be Sumo. They're alternating between their left and right front legs to push forward. It's just a really fast animation, so it looks like wild flailing without context lol
Everyone's talking about fat hyper-realistic Barney, but no-one's commenting on the upright running ceratopsian, that shit is goofy as fuck. Also, I remember a while back when monster Island buddies covered this game. Weird experience the first time seeing this, and with your video I can experience it again.
My only exposure to Primal Rage as a kid was from my dentist office. They had a couple of arcades for the kids to play, and I always hated getting pulled away to get my braces rewired.
The 90's were the best time to be a kid. Everything was awesome and we had unprecedented freedom. I can't imagine what it's like to be growing up now with cell phones and constantly being intimidated by what's on the news...
@@_TheeZarcosuchus I was making a reference to this video at 5:48 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aMwRaPz4Qqg.html&ab_channel=VargskelethorUncut%3AFullJoelStreams
Took the thought right out of this game devs head.... Did you know. Primal Rage is a plagiarism of this game. Not all of us forgot.... And it's not the only Japanese game the "Chicago outfit" (bally/Williams entertainment & subsidiaries) plagiarized. They would prevent any dinosaur game with that word in it. I already checked it. The average time for games on the 90s is the same as now, six months to a year. And it's pronounced "thai-to" not "tay-to".
The Fighting Game Community has developed an ironic-but-then-not-so-ironic appreciation for this game in the last like year and a half. Now, they recognize all the flaws it has gameplay wise...I believe the term is "jank". But they'll tell you themselves, they'll play each other on anything. Anything. So I think what I'm saying is there's tournaments for Dino Rex now. There's people playing this game for prize money.
I have a pretty strong guess for why the T-Rex is purple. The alt pallate for when you fight the same dino as you is often similarly garish. I'm guessing it was done because they were still worried about players mixing up their characters. The T-Rex was probably made to be the final boss (that is the DinoRex's big, fat, golden T-Rex) and to keep it that way they gave the player the alt pallate instead.
I’ve always wondered if this game ever even got an official arcade release. I’ve tried so hard but I’ve never been able to find a photo of the actual arcade cabinet. Either way I think this game has a lot of charm. Neat retrosaurs and cool pixel art backgrounds. With more development time it could’ve been a cult classic just like Primal Rage
Yeah, I was struggling with that as well. Considering that's the only platform it was released on until 2007, you'd think you'd be able to find the cabinet somewhere online.
This game was released. Years ago as a young lad I saw it in an arcade at "The American Adventure" theme park in England. I always remembered the loud sounds and the crazy coloured dinos. I never saw it again anywhere and wondered what it was called, then MAME happened.
Iirc a lot of arcades in Japan use universal cabinets so they can just swap out the boards, so maybe it just never got a unique cabinet? No idea if the whole hotswapping thing was around back then so take that with a grain of salt
Angry Video Game Nerd (a.k.a. James Rolfe) did an episode all about Taito games...he *missed* this one. No harm, no foul on his part, though (😉). Thank you for showcasing to us all this 'gem (😁).'
considering James is a massive fan of old B-Movies he probably couldn't bring himself to slamming on this game despite its flaws, he would see the stop-motion dino-monsters and feel bad about making fun of it.
@@StickySauce101 That's possible; I do know he's a big B-movie enthusiast. Though he did kinda slam the Sega 32X port of "Primal Rage" in his 2-part Sega Genesis/CD episode.
In terms of dinosaur games I know one obscure series you should review that’s very much similar to this one. No it’s NOT Fossil Fighters, but actually the Battle/Combat of Giants series that Ubisoft made. There were a couple games in this series, dinosaurs, dragons and even mutant insects, although the dinosaurs got more games done for them (one on DS, a DSi expansion of sorts, a Wii game and finally for 3ds).
I was already somewhat familiar with the behind the scenes story of Dino Rex thanks to Monster Island Buddies, but did not expect Gundam to come into this story.
So about that original concept with the helicopters, there is an arcade game that has a strikingly similar premise to that original idea. It’s called Prehistoric Isle 2. It may be worth doing a video on that game and it’s predecessor.
This is why you are my favorite dino account. You dig deep into dino media. Shit I probably would have never even heard of if you haven't mentioned it. This stuff is interesting.
Some may mock the plot of Dino Rex but after years of research there is truth to be found behind it. It's actually a work of non-fiction. Beware Mr. Ho Lee and train your dinosaur for the ultimate battle ahead!
Every game that ends with a half naked post apocalyptic predator capitalist being killed by Pteranodon egg can't be bad. With a little polish in move set and game mechanics that could be a lot of fun. Train different Dinos or chose different trainers to improve your Dino, and most important..ADD a decent Stegosaurus...with all his weaponry its kind of insane to not have him in a Dinosaur fighting game.
To make you feel better regarding the skill issues: I'm an experienced fighting game player who grew up with Street Fighter, Fatal Fury, DoA etc. but even I was not able to get pass stage 2 when I played Dino Rex on an emulator some time ago. It's controls are unbearable
“ detached his elbow” and drew until his fingers practically stopped working!? Jeeze, I have never heard of such self destructive behavior for an animator!! Was/is that common in that industry??
Man with gun pointing at two sentient arcade cabinets: "Which one of you is Primal Rage?" Primal Rage: "Seriously?" Dino Rex: "High-pitched rawr" Strike 1! The loud rawr shows that SOMEONE knows they're a dinosaur game! Now, who programmed you! Primal Rage; "Umm... Atari?" Dino Rex: "Harp harp! Kua kua!" That's right, Dennis Harper and Frank Kuan! Atari is just the company. That's strike 2! Now, lets hear your introductions! Primal Rage: *Frog sound and bird kaw* Dino Rex: *Dinosaur roar* That's it, you don't even sound like a dinosaur game! I knew you were a fake! *BLAM BLAM*, *Turns to the Dino Rex Machine* I never should have doubted you! Lets go, Primal Rage!
This game came out the same year as Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger (the show that Season 1 of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers got footage from), so that was likely more than just a coincidence.
Lmao, first time finding out about this game, the man has yet to talk about the game and im already laughing because of the obvious Barney reference one can make and the dorky visual aesthetic of the dinosaur fighter you play as in game 😂😂😂
You want a rare Dino Game? Savage quest, I played this once 20 years ago, and took me forever to find any information on it... a warlock steals an allosauruses eggs, for a ritual, and you play the allosaurus to get them back
This game had a lot of potential too bad the developers didn't put any real effort into it this could have been one of the top best games of its time! They should try to remake this game with the modern CGI graphics we have today imagen how awesome a newer more updated version of this game would be like today?
Oh hey, turns out Dino Rex is gonna be coming to the Switch as part of another Taito compilation. Dunno if it's coming to the west, but I know I'm down for it if it does, how about you all?
One video I think should be covered, is the Dinotopia book series. Series of books from the 1990s of honestly, the most stunning Dinosaur art ever produced and one of the best Dinosaur based stories and worlds out there. The books today cost a mint and it's weirdly not really known about anymore, the only big RU-vid video is covering the TV miniseries. Not the book. Hell it's even hard to find good quality scans of the book art online.
about the praise for the game, there is a "genre" of games that are kind of popular in the fighting game niche called kusoge, it means shit game, people like to play jank weird fighting games
It was only a matter of time before you made a video on this, lol. I find it crazy Tatio never tried to sue Midway over some of the similarities between Dino Rex and Primal Rage. Well at least any record I can find of it.
Hello, I just watched your video and it is pretty well done. I personally really love Dino Rex and I do want to share a rather interesting update on this game that it is currently on Hamster Corporation's Arcade Archives series on the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 along with a release on Taito Milestones 2 also on the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. Thankfully on the Arcade Archives version you can actually change the difficulty. I also really recommend checking out Taito's later fighting games Kaiser Knuckle, Psychic Force, and Psychic Force 2012.
Because it was already edited through by the time I realized the mistake. It takes a longer time to take the segment apart and replace it than it does to just add in the correction next to it.
Truly based grounded footsies fighting game, can’t even cross your opponent up because the devs knew jump ins are cheap and wanted to focus on the neutral
I feel a lot of the info sources in this video were misunderstood and misrepresented. It's understandable on some level, because this is a dinosaur focused youtube channel instead of a video game one. Can't expect someone to fully comprehend a topic that's new to them just from reading a few articles and Google searches. I think it would be a helpful gesture to include sources in the video description, so people can read more on their own and get a clearer unbiased picture.
I actually am impressed by all the ambition of this game. The animation, the backgrounds, the insane world. It's just a shame that they were so rushed that the team was just destroyed trying to make a working game. Corporate art gonna do that, and I'm so sad for Takatsuna. NGL I would love a fighting game based on Ray Harryhausen's dinosaurs and monsters And honestly, this is still a better King Kong game than either the last one or the upcoming one.
Dino Rex is seriously in the realm of its so bad its good. Taito's arcade fighter was truly awful with its bad controls, uncanny animations, obnoxious voice acting, the fact you can't get past your opponents, werid hitboxes, and hard difficulty (and not even a good hard). However, it manages to be good with its uncanny animations, making the game unintentionally hilarious, and the city destruction is the only fun part of the game. The game is utter trash, but it's trash you can get a good laugh at. The drunken cocaine dinosaurs would be right at home in an Hour of Poop video. 🦕💩🦖💩
FYI regarding 3 months to make a game, even in the atari 2600 era that was considered short. ET was developed in 6 weeks and the man who did it lived at his desk to pull it off, for a 9o's era game 3 months is absolutely nothing, the average was give or take 8 months dev time to a year, 2 for especially ambitious titles. It could be shorter if some of the groundwork was done (asset reuse, a viable game enging etc.)
16:50 - even the little spinning animation of the figurine glitches if you keep watching it. I'm sure everyone's working 120 hour weeks to get this and another game out the door but it sounds like hell. 22:25 I've always hated those smoothing filters, but for once it actually improves things.
Anybody play Jurassic park warpath? For a fighting game centered around dinosaurs that was fun! Plus you could eat the occasional human or animal that was stupid enough to get in the middle of a Dino fight for a small town health boost.
