Yes, people who dig up bones are called paleontologists and not archaeologists. Let's all just ignore that inaccuracy and proceed with the video. Thank you :-)
I remember this game in my local arcade when i was a kid. It was almost always empty because most people were playing SF2 and MK then later Samurai Shodown and Killer Instinct. I think maybe it was because of the control scheme because the graphics look good and actually holds up.
Not sure but I think I'm it's #1 fan. I have every home version boxed including Tiger Electronics R-ZONE. Action figures in the box from when I bought them in 1994, all the rage CD, the book Primal Rage the Avatars, comic series. My Crown Jewel is my Arcade1up wrapped with Primal Rage decals and a real arcade board. Full arcade machine is just to big. Thank you so much for honoring my favorite game.
Huge dinosaur fan when this released. My friend told me about it and I ran to the local University to visit their arcade. I spent over $20 in quarters just that one day. I reached the end of the game I was quite irritated that there wasn't a final boss. Once my awe of the game faded a bit, I hated the fact that there were 2 gorilla characters, as well as Sauron and Diablo seeming too similar. To me I always felt that this game only really had 5 characters.
I absolutely love how the tone of these videos is so friendly and wholesome, and then there are these random PG-13 innuendos/references that take it up a notch.
I think it would have been funny if instead of just censoring the "Golden Shower" finisher, the developers of the SNES version subverted expectations by having an actual golden shower, as in the bathroom fixture, fall on your defeated opponent. It would have been a lot more creative than what we ended up getting.
This is on those fighters that you either really like or you don't. I personally really liked it. It had a great concept and controlled well. I had the Atari Jaguar CD version....probably worth a lot these days.
Primal Rage is based on mortal kombat 1 somewhat 7 fighters Talon is Liu Kang Sauron is Johnny cage Blizzard is Sub Zero- Ice Diablo is Scorpion- Fire Armadon is Rayden- Lightening Chaos is Kano- the disgusting one Vertigo is Sonya- The only female In the final battle you fight all of them just like shang tsung's morphing in the final battle of MK1.
It is bizarre they never thought to include any bosses in the game. once you beat all the dinosaurs, the game ends, that's it. Could have really done with a huge badass dinosaur, maybe a giant Goro-esque mutant one or something. Also, totally should have had the monsters from Rampage as hidden characters in the game!
They had plans for a final boss encounter. Between the cost of the models they digitized, and the notoriously time consuming process of stop motion animation, they must've opted for an endurance round as a quick fix solution instead.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Primal Rage is one of my true loves of the early 90’ arcade era. I can’t even begin to think of how many 10p coins I’ve dumped in over the years,so on getting my own Hyperspin arcade machine,i made sure on first turning on that Primal Rage was included..thank god it was. The Valley Of Gwangi was a childhood favourite of mine,so on seeing this my mind was blown!
_Primal Rage_ was my absolute favorite arcade game from 90's, although I was just a kid mashing buttons with no idea how to perform any of the special attacks. Still, it had giant dinosaur-esque monsters fighting over a post-apocalyptic Earth and that was more than enough to keep me hooked on it. Fast forward to the Covid lockdown where, feeling nostalgic for simpler childhood times, I looked up _Primal Rage_ playthroughs and found my love for this game returning with a vengeance. One particular player was pulling of attacks and combos I never could. I also discovered the ability to eat worshippers and all the various endings (something young me didn't even know existed). Those playthroughs just made me even more curious about the game's creation and other background material. The more I discovered the more it made me realize this game has all the elements for an amazing modern remake. Not only could the game mechanics be refined and expanded (like worshippers playing a more active role in battle) but the lore and characters fleshed out to give the neo-prehistoric world more substance. For instance, show Sauron's tribe serving up live human sacrifices to their patron god like professional chefs presenting their dishes with flair. Or have the tribes of Blizzard and Armadon be conditional allies that focus on spiritual enlightenment and restoration of the best parts of the old world. Maybe include a _Mortal Kombat_ style story mode to flesh out the gods and their histories and interactions with one another. But these are just the thoughts of a guy who still thinks giant monsters fighting is really awesome and would love to see them come back under the right game developers. Fingers crossed it isn't just a fantasy of mine.
I still watch every Godzilla movie that comes out so I enjoy the giant monsters fighting as well :-) I'm glad my video could scratch that nostalgic itch for you
Wow this is some video. When I first seen primal rage I thought it was mind blowing back in the day. it was a fun arcade game to play. As you mentioned However the favorite part for me for primal rage is how the company encrypted it so well that they themselves when trying to release it for arcade treasures 2 couldn't even decrypt their own code. I always found that funny that no one knew how to decrypt it. I believe to this day MAME was never able to crack this code. When I was on the forums at the time quite a few years ago they asked quite a few people who were involved with the game to see if the code could be fully cracked but no one seemed to remember how to do it 🤷🏼♂️ One of the very interesting aspects of this game was that story in my opinion. So unfortunately it's possible that the original game code could forever be lost or until somebody comes up with the actual code.
From what I was able to gather Dennis Harper was the one who designed the encryption because of all the counterfeit boards being produced overseas so he made it as difficult as possible. When people asked him To decrypt it (even people from the Mame emulator development team) he was being really cagey and wouldn't offer up any advice. Perhaps he forgot or he just doesn't want people to know. I'm glad you enjoyed the video regardless
The control scheme also works in Street Fighter 2, and is a technique called negative edging. T Hawk uses this well, as his 360 throw doesn’t have a whiff animation. as long as the punch buttons are held ahead of time, the 360 can be spun on the joystick, then the punch button can be let go. The throw will either come out, or t hawk will just block. In essence, you can block while inputting the move, making it completely safe.
I think Primal Rage the arcade game was released in 1994 instead of 1993. I got the game for the Midway Arcade Classics 2 for the GameCube. It is a nice video to help me relax during these stressful times.
It's Been a while since I was very busy looking at some classic 1980s and 1990s arcade games and now after for about 4 months..I've finally made my return to this very wonderful channel for some Retrotastic arcade history..Primal Rage is what I called The Mortal Kombat of Prehistoric era..Talon is one of my three favorite dinosaurs along with Vertigo and Sauron..the gameplay looks pretty decent..also it each characters have their own fatalities like Mortal Kombat..this is another excellent video and I'm ready to grabbed my bowl of popcorn and a fresh cold soda for it..Thank You, Mr. Patman
This will be a DInorrific good time to watch! But I gotta wait until I’m off work. Just had to right a comment to quote my excitement for a fresh PatmanQC release.
I got into this game in highschool abt 10 years ago, played it everywhere on my phone and didnt even know it was on midway arcade treasures 2. Still a favorite
It's interesting to see a Unique concept for its time using Prehistoric creatures as fighters compare to the notable ones. Still surprised that the Sequel never come to fruition until it later becomes playable
I'm a big fan of this game from the arcades, I gotta say this is the best comparison video for Primal Rage. A couple years ago I did alot of research between the ports, since the MAME version has its issues. I learned alot of new stuff that I didn't know about the ports and its backstory!
Prehistoric Little Games!!! Like I Said I am so Happy my Blessing Wish Came True Thank You PatmanQC For Doing The History of Primal Rage and Remember What You Say and Remind Us All You'll Be Glad You Did!!!👍👍
15:35 Oh Yeah! I Remember that Commercial of the 90s Primal Rage the Action Figures I Remember that Commercial Since Me And My Brother Watch Shows on Nickelodeon Like the Land of the Lost The 90s Remake of the 1960 or 1970s Original Show Call Land of the Lost and Then Later Followed By The Adventures of Pete & Pete and All That Show on Nickelodeon and Then the Commercial is on so as PRIMAL RAGE ACTION FIGURES!!! Each Sold Separately from Playmates®
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries Yeah! and Thank You PatmanQC For Doing it I Been Waiting for You to do The Review History in the History of Primal Rage the Arcade and Video Games Anyway Thank You And Remember Happy Little Paints, Happy Little Game's and Finally Prehistoric Little Games You'll Be Glad You Did!!! 👍👍.
My friends and I were extremely excited as kids to play this. My buddy used to get every game he wanted on day one, I went over to played it and liked it, but wasn't fully in love. My dad was supposed to get me it the same day, but didn't. Weird memory. lol. I do enjoy the game though! I think I have it on 3DO.
In my theory the monsters represent the seven deadly sins: Diablo - Wrath Sauron - Gluttony Vertigo - Lust Chaos - Envy Blizzard - Pride Armadon - Sloth Talon - Greed At least that's my thoughts on the game.
You're definitely onto something with this theory lol. My favorite is Blizzard because he has a prideful style and nature about himself as he beats ass with ice lol.👼
Man this game is my favorite back in the day this series needs to come back it would make so much money nowadays absolutely it will be a hit for the studio that makes it If Atari's still the owners you can put them on the map again with a reboot for current day
I take it you like playing as Sauron? lol awesome video. I think the control change was a miss as well as not having a end boss. Can’t wait till o see what you have next
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries hey man, i know you love bowling so i was going to ask you have you tried forevr bowling on the quest 2? Me and the ol lady are having a blast playing it!
@@kcadventures1454 I have been into VR since 1991 or 1992 when the technology really wasn't that great. Unfortunately in 2015 I lost my hands and my feet so I'm not able to do any sort of VR gaming. I bought my son and oculus quest and he really enjoys it though
I'm so glad you just talk real, it sounds like you are just explaining things exactly as you understand them and not trying to fit a script. An example of this is when you mentioned Mame at the end, I think it's funny how some youtubers seem to think they will get sued if they acknowledge its existence. Excellent video all around, you really show that you spent some time playing which is appreciated.
Used to go to Albertsons to play this game after school🤣 the soundtrack was so memorable because it was loud, one quarter got me to the end. Vertigo was always mysterious to me, Diablo reminded me of Scorpion. well I eventually bought it for SNES good Video!
This game was the peak of arcade 90s hardware. Tilt had the big screen version of it and those fatalities rocked. It’s so sad we haven’t gotten a true remaster it’s *Impossible* to emulate this. On this video alone the fatalities don’t mostly run right. Why at 29:50 is the mk2 Deadpool room there rofl
I have only experienced the SNES version as a kid and loved it.They didn't have it on arcade where I lived. Later on as a late teen I got the Midway Arcade Treasures with this game on it and was pleasantly surprised on how the arcade version was so much better and getting to play this version finely on the GameCube. The SNES version really held up on its own really well in my opinion. It was truly amazing what the SNES could do pushed to its limits at the time.
I like this game it’s a shame it doesn’t get recognized as MK does but nonetheless it’s fun and I’ve always liked the ending artwork it reminds me of the Topps Dinosaurs Attacks! cards back in the day
As an aspiring paleontologist, the opening monologue brings me so much pain but it also gives me a deep belly laugh that would make Santa himself jealous.
The special move control scheme made it kind of bulky. I always felt if they just gave the game more traditional fighting game controls it would have taken off more and kept people playing longer.
@@JamesChessman the Saturn port is pretty good. I like the Genesis as well because it allowed you to map specials to two of the buttons on the 6 button pad. Made it a lot easier to play and pull off combos. It looked terrible though. 😂
@@PistNRods haha yeah it looks bad on genesis, it could have been been much better. I actually just tried running the actual arcade game in MAME… in web browser, it works great and I didn’t realize MAME could run like this. The actual arcade game looks awesome
I saw PR2 at that Golf Land. It did exist, and I never saw it at another arcade I went to. Even the big Pac-Man Arcade in Pasadena Ca, around that same time didn't have it. I always wanted this game to be revistied in this day and age. I wasn't a player of PR but I always enjoyed watching the guys who could play it well. I was a SF and MK player. PR's control scheme was nuts to me. Fun as hell to be around though.
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries It was a full miniature golf attraction that had water slides and whatnot. Medium size arcade attached to the food court. I don’t remember any other games that were tested there by Atari, but PR2 was there. I always assumed I’d see it again, but as your video covered……that just wasn’t in the cards.
jeez, $50,000 per model? that's extra nuts when i think back to the Sega Channel days and how one of the models was the prize for winning the Primal Rage contest they ran when the console version first came out.
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries it was truly an amazing piece of tech for the time. and it had some awesome contests, i was lucky enough to win the Garfield one and have my prize hung on my various walls for the last 20+ years :D
Oldest dinosaur fighting game I can remember is Dino Wars on the TRS-80. Terrible game, but it had some impressive scaling effects and synthesized roars for 1980.
Was enthralled by this game ever since seeing the full arcade cabinet in action. Couldn't believe what i was seeing! Bought it on Sega then traded up to the 32x version. Recently found the large box ps1 version at a pawn shop. May not be the best fighter ever but dang does it look amazing. Vertigo's stage still looks awesome. Sauron is the coolest looking character I think, and Chaos was my favorite to play.
Brilliant episode, I remember getting this on the megadrive when it was released , being a massive fan of dinosaurs in general I loved it although it was a little too short, Im going to have to play it again though because I never realized the megadrive version only had 2 of the 3 fatalities! Thanks PatmanQC! If they had continued developing Primal Rage and had not gone down the road of humans/cancelled game and stuck with lots of different dinosaurs it was already potentially a few steps ahead of SF and MK, simply biting another dinosaur was way more satisfying than punching/kicking in other games
Thanks for this entertaining feature! PR2 looked horrible with the human characters. Ech! I played this frequently at the local arcade in 93/94. Graphics were impressive, sound was big and loud too.
Mortal Kombat 2 and primal rage were always on big arcade movie theater like screens and the joysticks were on a pedestal and the speakers would be loud both games with two big screens that was when Peter Piper pizza was actually Koo. Man I think that was back in 93 or 94 it was before killer instinct virtual fighter and mk3 came out. Those arcade machines would be loud and you could see the fatalities on both games on big screens I was still a little kid but those were some of the best memories
Primal Rage wasn't the best fighting game but I enjoy it for what it was. Even though Part 2 was canceled, Galloping Ghost Arcades in Illinois has it. I remember reading an issue of Gamepro magazine about that woman who was so upset when her son did Chaos's Golden Shower fatality she did what she could did get this game off the market. Crazy fun times. Lol
I STILL can't figure out how to play this game properly... the commands for the moves are just ridiculous! That "differentiation" is the reason this game wasn't as successful as they (and we) hoped it would be... I would bet it, dollars to doughnuts!
Thanks Patman! I loved and was amazed by this game when it released. As a toy collector, it sucks that I missed out on buying the full collection but I suppose I can start looking 😅
Primal rage was a fun and unique fighting game. I agree putting human avatars into the sequel made it more like other games. I'd love a reboot or spiritual succeror bring dinosaur fighting back to gaming.
I loved that game you did not see the arcade very often here in NL. Too bad it never really emulates well as it should that deserves that game. Thx for the info Bro
I know the fighting game commubity don't respect this game but ir was pure fun. Like u said, early 90s was all about dinos at the movies and 1v1 fighting in games. I wish thw series kept goin and EVOLVING
I did enjoy this. I think Primal Rage dont get enough attention so im glad you did this video. I own the one for Game Gear, Saturn, Genesis, and a copy of the game for the Jag cd. I do think out of them all the Saturn version looks graphically the best though I do like the Genesis version.
Thanks. The Saturn version does look the best. The PC version would have turned out the best in my opinion but the resolution is so much lower for some reason.
The major flaw of Primal Rage is that once the novelty of a prehistoric/dinosaur fighting game wore off, its lacklustre gameplay mechanics were exposed and laid bare for all to see. In my local arcade back in the day, SF2 and KI were king on a consistent basis with huge lineups... but after the first few months, Primal Rage just gathered dust in comparison. I REALLY wanted to like Primal Rage but it's just a shallow fighting game with a dinosaur gimmick.
4:47 ... That is not Peter Kleinow. Peter can be seen working at 3:18 and 3:20. Peter did a lot of commercial stop motion for the Pillsbury doughboy and Gumby. He also animated for Gremlins, and the Terminator 1 & 2. The man posing with the Terminator puppet looks like model maker Monty Shook, but I could be wrong about that.
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I probably would think that now, but at the time I was pretty snobby when it came to arcade conversions. I didn't evne like playing the SNES Street Fighter 2, heh. I chilled out a bit as I got older though.
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries Most of my friends did too. All i could see what was missing and how off it felt, I guess. I look at things differenrly now.
I remember this game coming out in the arcade, it was super loud. Much louder than Mk2 and SF2. People really tried to like it, but in the end no one stuck around and it was by itself most of the time while we all gathered around the sf2 and mk2 machines.
