The Forgotten World of Manufacturer Racing Games

There was a time when you could play racing games tailor made specifically for certain car manufacturers, with its use as a method of advertising their brand towards gamers. A lot of these games went by and drowned in obscurity and as time goes on the idea of manufacturer racing games is gone completely. So i've compiled a collection of old and obscure games in the hopes of experiencing what they were like, in both their good and bad parts.

Lamborghini American Challenge (originally released as Crazy Cars III) is a 1992 racing video game developed and published by Titus France for the Amiga, Amstrad CPC, Atari ST, Commodore 64, MS-DOS, Super NES, Amiga CD32, and Game Boy. If you ever want to torture yourself and make a part 2, the Ford Racing series has three more entries, each significantly worse than 2 & 3 - Ford Street Racing, Ford Racing Off Road (which also features a couple of Land Rovers) and the already mentioned Mustang game. To pad it out, there's also a PS1 game promoting the Boxster called Porsche Challenge, a N64 Lamborghini game, a PS2 port of the famous arcade racer F355 Challenge, Test Drive Ferrari which has some fantastic cars and the awful Shift 2 physics and finally a pair of Volvo games, the SimBin thingy Volvo The Game which is a proper sim with only 2 tracks and an OG Xbox release Drive For Life: Volvo, which I remember disliking even as a big Volvo fan. Oh and how dare you miss the legend that is Yaris :D

I see there's very little info provided on Ferrari the Race Experience. It's a game that was originally called Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli, developed by Eutechnyxx and was for PS3, PS2, DS and Wii. While I was unable to play the PS3 version, I know that Bruno Senna was tapped as the driver consultant and the entire package was designed as a more serious sim like GranTurismo. I played the Wii version and it's an impressive sim racer on the platform (where there's a sore lack of any) with a proper wheel. The DS version was a decent package in and of itself but also included crash happy AI and extreme difficulty spikes down at the end. A "Deluxe" version was released on Wii which included DLC cars that were sold on PS3. Ferrari Race Experience is a "final" release of sorts on PS3 and Wii (Europe only) that rounded out the package with new additional cars (Ferrari FXX, included). The game(s) also included a very, very robust livery editor and I honestly think the game is really for serious simcade racers.

I never knew there were this much manufacturer games out there other than Porsche Unleashed, quite a surprise to see so many of them. The Chrysler one is the best imo lol. I really liked some of the diversity these games brought to the table, not just in terms of gameplay but the environments as well. Some of these were really aesthetically pleasing to me. Great video! There was another Ferrari game called Test Drive: Ferrari Racing Legends, developed by Slightly Mad Studios, so I think it was a bit better, but I haven't played it as my laptop wouldn't be powerfull enough to run it at the time. Also, there was Volvo The Game, which I never played myself for the same reason, but if I remember correctly it was some kind of a weird game focused on safe driving (for obvious resons). Although I'm a fan of Volvo cars and their brend philosophy, I still think it's weird to try and make a game about safe driving. I think reviews at the time reflected that. In any case, as I said, great video and a lot of effort went into making it. Thank you!

This doesn't technically count but in Australia, the TOCA Race Driver trilogy on PS2 was known as the V8 Supercars Race Driver games. Replacing the extensive lineup of cars with just Ford Falcons and HSVs. Also in Australia, Beetle Adventure Racing on the Nintendo 64 was known as HSV Adventure Racing, which was the same game but with HSV cars made for the Australian market. So yeah, Australian manufacturer racing games were basically leeching off of other racing games, but it was at least something back when we still had Australian manufactured vehicles. Those were definitely better days.

Although they were never released in the West, there were two all-Nissan titles made by EA in the mid 1990s called "Nissan Presents: Over Drivin' GT-R" for the Saturn and "Nissan Presents: Over Drivin' Skyline Memorial" for PS1. Both were basically the original "The Need For Speed" (which was titled "Over Drivin'" In Japan) with all of the default playable cars replaced with various classic and modern (at the time) Nissans.

There was a 4th game in the Ford franchise: Ford Street Racing, which was a first manufacturer racing game for me. You should definitely try it, it didn't have any interesting tracks but it has really interesting mechanic where you start a race with two or three cars in your team, and you have to switch between them mid race (generally because the AI driving for your team suck, and you must save their position to acquire the points so you could win the race), and then there's drafting and drifting utilizing all cars in your team.

Despite its age, the game is still a fun arcade racer with simcadey aspects and a big selection of licensed Lotus cars to drive (in addition to Proton, which was owned by Lotus at the time). The soundtrack by Hybrid (known for composing the score for Driveclub) was great too, though it can be a bit repetitive since there's only five licensed songs in the game.

Great research job on theses titles! Dont know if its your cup of tea, but 16bit era also had a ton of Manufacturer Racing titles that can be used as subject for a part 2 of this video: Starting of with Sega's Outrun, which is basically a Ferrari game and probably the first that popularized the idea of car brands in games back in arcades in 86', going all the way to iterations on the 6th~7th gen of consoles with Outrun 2/06', e remake of the original arcade featuring various Ferrari's models, keeping it techinally a manufacturer's game. And it goes on as well for another brands: Lamborghinni's had its pretty good title on the SNES (Lamb. American Challenge, made by Titus - the same from the infamous Superman 64), Lotus Turbo Challenge trilogy and Jaguar XJ220 on retro PCs, Toyota Celica Rally games, etc. Not to mention bike manufacturarers, which is an entire universe on its own, too. ;)

I played that BMW M3 challenge a lot before getting my own PC and starting with rfactor. Also the Alfa game looks interesting (Alfa Romeo 155 v6 is always cool). I also used to play a cut down NFS4 BMW challenge kind of thing. Basically NFS4 but with only BMW M models.

Of all these games I've mainly played Ford Racing 2 which I really liked. It's worth noting that the Ferrari game was also available on the NDS and it was surprisingly good despite the hardware limitations.

About Chrysler Classic Racing, the reason why the starter cars costs in the $3000 range is because they were the base price of their irl counterparts during the 50's. By taking the inflation into account, a $3250 1954 Plymouth Belvedere would costs $35584,72 in 2023. Which means these prices are very exact.

I've played Viper Racing (my buddy brought it in for us to play one day at daycare, never realized it was a legit Sierra driving sim), Ford Racing 2 (the very first game I got with my PS2), Corvette (got another copy for Christmas one year when I already had a copy), and an earlier version of that Ferrari game called Ferrari Challenge: Trofeo Pirelli on both Wii and DS. I played the hell out of the DS version of Ferrari Challenge, including the card game.

Amazing video, i have to try some of these games. There are 2 other Ford Racing besides the trilogy, Ford Street Racing and Ford Off Road Racing, but they are pretty bad, it's a good thing you skipped them.

You missing: Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge, Lotus Turbo Challenge 2, and Lotus III: The Ultimate Challenge fom early 90s. The Ford Simulator from 87 (just like Test Drive). Jaguar XJ220 from 92. And Turbo Esprit from 86, year before Test Drive. It was developed with Lotus.

I had a lot of fun with Jeep Thrills on the Wii. It didn't make me want a Jeep, but the off road racing was pretty decent for a Wii game. Project Cars -Pagani Edition is a pretty interesting free demo of Project Cars 1 that only includes Paganis. While not exactly cars, Milestone also made DUCATI - 90th Anniversary in 2016, the same year their annual MotoGP game was Valentino Rossi The Game.

Damn. This cideo inadvertently made me miss Blockbuster. I played Ford vs Chevy and made my parents rent it twice to finish it lol. Also, I can't believe how many of these I played as a kid. Ford Racing 3. Ford vs Chevy. Some other Ford Street Racing. Alfa Romeo Racing Italiano, as it was known where I'm from. And there was one on the PS1, it was a Ford truck racing game, where you could build your own tracks.

I remember having a lot of fun with “Volvo The Game”, which was more or less the “sim” racing game i grew up with (until i got in to Forza Motorsport 4 at 11 or 12). Volvo The Game only had 2 tracks, but which other game has the Gothenburg city circuit also the car list was a little limited. From my memory you could either drive a: “P3” S60 concept car “P3” S60 concept race car P14 C30 STCC car P24 S60 STCC car First gen S40 STCC or BTCC P80 850 Wagon BTCC car P200 240 Turbo Evolution race car
