What does the 14th century foundation stone say about the medieval Jewish community of Porto, Portugal? With thanks to Dr. Michael Rothwell and Professor Hugo Vaz for access to the sources and the amazing new Jewish Museum of Porto.

Thank you for such an informative video. I'm Portuguese, from Braga where despite doing some research, sadly I have not found any evidence of a Jewish historical presence. In fact it appears that the whole of Minho province has no Jewish heritage and yet across the border in Galiza it's the opposite. I've learned a lot about Portugal and it's Jewish history. I'm very happy to see a growing Jewish community Porto.

This is a wild coincidence. I’m currently visiting Lisbon right now and today I learned about the massacre of Jews here 1506 and of the targeting of Jews in Porto in 1618 for the first time in my life. Then I pop online and see you’ve posted this exact video yesterday.

History is what happened in the past. Today...we are living what will become history. May there be more examples of peace and prosperity than persecution.

Thanks again, Sir- I think it's very important, and of course very interesting, to know about Jewish history in Europe. those are things which aren't very well known to the general public, I guess.

Dr. Abramson, where exactly was this foundation stone located? You referenced “other side of the Douro”, do you mean in Gaia where there was indeed a Jewish community? Thanks so much!

Not sure precisely where, but I assume the archaeological remains would be on the site of contemporary Villa de Gaia

Shalom, in Leviticus 23:7 where it says ”‘And on the fifteenth day of this new moon is the Festival of Matzot to יהוה - seven days you eat unleavened bread. ‘On the first day you have a set-apart gathering, you do no servile work.“ ‭‭Wayyiqra (Leviticus)‬ ‭23‬:‭6‬-‭7‬ ‭TS2009‬‬ When it says you shall do no “servile work” am I allowed to cook or no? As it seems it’s like it’s 3 Shabbat days in a row for Shabbat, pesach and hamatzoth? Please help me out I am seeking the ancient paths and desirous to walk in them (as far as I know I am a gentile) What is servile work? I’ve heard some state “servile work” was what the levites did in the tabernacle/Beit Ha Mikdash but not sure if that’s true Thank you so much

Amazing that the Lord our God Hashem chooses an Assyrian, Abraham to be the ancestor of the Jews and gives his offspring riches and influence with the powerful of the world and lets them populate the whole earth ❤

Patriarch Abraham was recorded as being born in UR of the CHALDEES approx 1900 BC i.e. southern SUMER along Euphrates River close to the gulf of the 2 Rivers....they were neither Assyrian nor Semites.

@@denisebremridge8329 Chaldees was a province in southern Assyria. The people were Assyrians and worshiped the One God Creator and called Him HaShem: He who cannot be named and therefore His name is One. The Assyrians were Semites and their language and letters are called Ktav Ashurit - the same letters that the Hebrew language is written with today.

If you read Isaiah 36 and 37 you see clearly that the Assyrians were Jews and spoke the most Semitic language, Hebrew. The Assyrian king Sennacherib and his chief of staff speak to "Hezekiah's" advisors in Hebrew and refuse to speak Aramaic. 36:10 the king's chief of staff says: "The Lord Almighty Himself has sent me to rebuke you, because it has come to my knowledge that you have fallen from the right path and become an idolater" The Assyrians believed that it was still Ahaz who was king in Jerusalem. But the skillful diplomat Isaiah had persuaded the idolatrous Ahaz to abdicate and hand over the throne to his righteous son Hezekiah and in this way he saved Jerusalem and caused the Assyrian king to return. But the treacherous Ahaz sends his treacherous men in the dark of night and slaughters 185,000 soldiers from the Assyrian-Jewish army while they slept and this has consequences - illness strikes his son Hezekiah and the anti-Semitic Babylonians under Nebuchadnezzar destroy Jerusalem including the first temple @@denisebremridge8329

Nice sense of humour on the stone. Now I’m wondering, the woman who is responsible for my mitochondrial DNA was brought back to NS by a sea captain in the 1700’s and he claims she came from Portugal. They settled in Shelbourne Co, NS. Some people thought she was Black, as they had a significant community there. DNA testing says a small part of my DNA is from North Africa. I have a feeling there is more to that story than I’ll ever know. But with all you are saying about the Crypto Jews in Portugal, I wonder if she may have been rescued by him.

I have a question: Do you, a Jewish Rabbi, believe that Jesus was the son of the living God? I am not a Jew. I descend from Joseph, son of Jacob through his son Ephriam. Do you believe the Jews founded Portugal? Or, did someone else before them? Bruce Howard, MG, retired historian and Genealogist.
