Decades ago, I found myself visiting wineries in Alsace, Eastern France. I came across a medieval street, Rue des Juifs, in a beautifully preserved 14th century town. I noticed one stone house which had an ancient hollowed out recesss on the right hand side, a void that I surmised would have contained a rolled parchment of a mazuzah in its day. Rashi grew grapes, but did he make wine?

1:09 : " a casa do gato preto" (the black cat house"), in fact, the animal figuring and sculpted is not a cat (crypto jews had to hide anything linked to Judaism) : it is thought to be the Lion of Judah, symbol of Jerusalem and symbol of sefardic jews, knowed to be descendants of the tribe of Judah (and a few of them, Benjamin too)...see the emblem of the Synagogue of Bayonne (South West of France near Spain): community is called Nefutsot Yehudah, the exiles of Judah

Fascinating! I come from an academic tangent... looking at crypto-protestant elements in very Catholic Québec (the majority were likely "converts"). Looking at your methods, taking notes. Are there crypto-Jewish personal names that can be identified in the middle-ages? Sorry for all my questions: Could a "Jacob," shoemaker from the Netherlands, hired to fight for Britain in the Revolutionary War in the US, be identified as Jewish? Looking forward to the next videos, very interesting work!

Good questions, all--maybe I can deal with some of them in the Thursday Q&A. Just one answer for now: yes, there are definitely a handful of surnames that are frequently associated with Crypto-Jewish lineage.

Hey Henry - can you pls make a youtube video about the historical accuracy/some of the disputes over the Purim story and book of Esther - I think many Jews (including myself) wonder if the events actually happened. The inscriptions would have to be analyzed and dated by archaeologists in the first place. How old are they really? Are they pre, during, or post inquisition? Could the stones have been reused from earlier buildings? Was the location affected by the great Lisbon earthquake of 1755? There were earlier earthquakes in the area too, in 1321, 1356, and 1531, also another earthquake in 1761.

about RORO (resh vav holam resh vav holam) , read in the western way (i.e from left to right) my thought and other portuguese people with jewish background is as follows: "horror"...a kind of SOS message in a kabalystic way saying how horrible it is to be "new christian" or "crypto Jew", sitting on the fence, a horrible feeling.......

Why would a Jew spend hours carving a nickname into the side of a house under the hot Portuguese sun? It is not jail graffiti, it must have had a serious purpose.
