can you do a review on the langauge learning website LingQ
@azhivago2296

Hi Ikenna, I purchased your language learning guide a month or so ago in order to help me pick up French. In the guide you advise using Assimil and in some of your videos you have suggested using Anki. So I have a question... How do you suggest using the two resources together? I have uploaded all the Assimil parallel-text sentences with corresponding audio to Anki and am systematically working through the course, specifically translating from English into my target language, French (so I am engaging in the "active" phase from the beginning). However, this is a lot of work. I have been getting through roughly two lessons a day and it is taking roughly 4 hours each day to memorise the new sentences and review previously learnt content. I definitely feel like what I am doing is working, but I wonder if there is a more efficient way to go about this? When "actively" memorising the sentences in Anki, do you insist upon 100% accurate recall? I feel like I am cheating the work if I mess up a seemingly minor feature of a sentence (like a proposition) and hit "hard" or "good", even if I have recalled 95% of the sentence correctly. For example, If I recall "L'autre soir, M. Zitoun a un assiste un cocktail au bureau" incorrectly as "L'autre soir, M. Zitoun un assiste un cocktail au bureau" (the latter incorrect example omits the "a") I would insist upon hitting the "Again" button until I achieve perfection. Am I being too hard on myself? Should I be applying the 80/20 (Pareto principle) rule here? Would you strive for perfection or is this just an inefficient approach that is waisting time? Thanks for you help. Love the channel and your work. All best, Alex.

A Zhivago In my experience: It should be fun. Find your way that excites u to stay motivated. I find it pretty fun to learn with duolingo the basics of a new language. Then using Netflix Chrome LL extension or even the great LingQ Chrome extension. I even watch foreign tutorials for graphics or making music on youtube! So what are you interested in? Set future goals & make it fun the way to ur goals. Thats it!

Thanks for your very interesting article, here are a few more tips on how to learn Arabic… Set realistic goals, don’t just dive in and say “I want to be fluent Arabic within 1 year”, give yourself short term goals which lead up to long term goals. E.g. Short Term Goal = “I want to learn all about this topic in 1 month” and Long Term Goal = “I aim to be able to speak about at least 12 topics within the next 12 months Make time, you will need to set some time aside, preferably on a day to day basis, so you can achieve your goal. I highly recommend blocking out actual time on your calendar every day and really commit to this. Think of it as an appointment with your doctor that you wouldn’t consider missing. That is exactly how you should treat this task. As little as 20 minutes a day is a great start. Immerse yourself in the language, meet Arabic speaking friends, listen to the radio, watch a show on TV, and try to read the newspaper. Even if you do not fully understand the content, keep it as a daily exercise and you will eventually make sense of it all. The other great news is this listening exercise is the only way to improve your accent. Your brain will process all the information and you will notice the improvement with time. Have a practice buddy, keep yourself motivated and accountable by practicing Arabic with a friend. It is always a good strategy to practice the language with someone who is fluent and non-judgmental. I have a friend who practices Arabic with me and I practice English with her. (I discovered about these and more from Mirykal lingo guide website )

Here’s how I learned dutch free: 1. watch basic vids about dutch on yt 2. continue to watch yt vids 3. create english sentences (like 70 sentences) and translate each one of them using a translator to dutch. 4 repeat step 3 until you’ve reached a good point (maybe 150 sentences translated. NOTE: step 3 takes like 3-6 months to achieve so be patient)........ 5. watch dutch youtubers (without captions. you will know half of what they are saying and will help you learn nouns) 6. watch dutch shows, etc. for a couple of months. 7. try to find a dutch speaking person online or real life and try to talk to them. If you understand them and they understand you, good job! If not repeat step 3,5,6 then try again in a month
@Skullhearts111
@Skullhearts111 4 года назад
Hi, I like your approach to learning Dutch. I learned Dutch myself, but without using a translator because that can be highly inaccurate. I find the best way, for me, to learn is by immersion. Immerse yourself and soon you'll be able to understand a lot. Also, speak at any opportunity you can! (This is harder unless you live there like I do). Keep up the great work!
@MisterGames
@MisterGames 4 года назад
That's essentially what I did. I began translating Minoes while listening to a narration of it and also Dutch tv shows. In a few months I could understand part of Minoes I had not translated, like 80% and around 50% of some TV shows, depending on the show. I did no word list nor flash card drills.

For you cheap folks, you can go on Gen Lib Rus (Learned about it on Tumblr) if you want to get textbooks for free, this includes language books (and expensive ones you need for college)! You can search for the language, company name, author, title, ISBN, etc. Or on google, you can search the name of a book and type PDF and you might be able to find it that way. Was able to get PDFs of textbooks that aren't even that old this way for Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish! (the site is in English and Russian!) If you want audios, sometimes the publishers will post the audios on their website. Or if that doesn't work, you can try and find it on PirateBay.... Also don't forget about your local library! Sometimes they will have free access to language programs like Mango Languages, Pronunciator :)), or Rocket Languages! You can even get Pimsleur there, check it out, then just download the files lmao. You're welcome.

I checked the Pimsleur app and it's actually really good. But man, it's so goddamn expensive. I am currently learning japanese and I'm brazilian, and the monthly subscription is 72 reais, witch is not that much when converted to dollars, but for us is like 72 dollars monthly. I know you probably don't have to worry about it, because you are obviously sponsored by this app, but if you are going to make a video just to discourage people who are trying to learn a language on their own and say it's practically impossible if they don't have the app that sponsors you, then just don't do it. I am not trying to make a mean comment or anything like that. It's just that when you see this gap between actually trying to help people learn and trying to sell an app so badly is really frustrating and disappointing. You're a really good youtuber and I really like your videos, but I think this one is just a disservice for people who are trying to learn a language on their own and it just discourages them.

Hello! I was reading your book and watching your RU-vid videos and had a question about Pimsleur. For Asian languages, do you still suggest using Pimsleur for the first 60 lessons and then moving on to Assimil?
@IkennaLanguages
@IkennaLanguages 5 лет назад
Asian languages can be more tricky, the first 90 lessons would suffice. Unless you feel very comfortable and not too challenged by thePimsleur material then you can move on ahead at around 60.

You recommend Pimsleur. But in Russia 90$ is 5500 roubles. It's a big money to pay for month. For me, working class teenager from Moskow, the middle amount of income from part-time jobs (if I work during summer holidays, there's no way to work during school year, fuck westernized schooling model) is 3000-5000 per month, and for teenager not from Moskow, this is no way to get too much money. I saw a video recently, comparing Muskowite bourgeois son of businessman, who gets a lot of money and spends it for shitty clothes, and a Ryazanskaya Oblast's girl, who live in a village and who's family gets only 600 roubles per month (БЛЯТЬ, ДЕСЯТЬ БАКСОВ, ТЫ ПРЕДСТАВЬ!), and can not let her buy something (i'm not speaking about learning languages, lol). The main problem of learning languages is MONEY, and you won't avoid it. Your advises are useful, but... it's not practical. I know, your videos are mostly for american audithory, but I wanted to tell you our situation. Hope you'll read it and make conclusions. In addition I want to say, fuck capitalism, seriously. I WANT TO LEARN FUCKING JAPANESE AND KOREAN FOR 2 YEARS ALREADY, BUT I CAN'T GO FURTHER THAN LEARNING BASICS, LIKE HIRAGANA AND HAN... *coughs* CHOESONGUL, УУУУУУУУУ СУКА ЖОПА ГОРИТ АААААААААА БЛЯЯЯЯЯЯЯЯТЬ

I mean I learned English for free to fluency, fast and easy, I just sat around playing video games, and when I wasn't allowed to sit play video games, I thought about how to improve my gaming, and then suddenly one day, I was fluent. When did that Everquest Champions of Norrath game come out... 2004, okay, I spoke fluent English then at age 12, and I started playing games in 1997, at age 5. Mind you, I hardly spoke my native language back then either, I mean after all, my best friend's family spoke Danish and my family Swedish, so at such early age, splitting learning into 3 languages, was probably not the best thing, but as a kid, who knows about efficient planning...

@ikenna As a third word country inhabitant, where buying anything in dollars is expensive af (like u$1=$67Arg plus 21% tax and 30% dollar tax (yes, 51% in taxes over anything bought in any foreign coin)) and actually you need like 140ars to eat a day, then you really appreciate any free tool... i remember joining a Steam Group for languages but ended up chatting with only one guy that really wanted to practice, the others just vanished... I would love to meet new ppl and now I'll try to save to buy a VRdevice since I saw your videos and that seems awesome and a big opportunity of practicing languages and also learning some (like the sing languages, that video was mindblowing) Any how, I'm a Spanish (Argentinian) native speaker, and can speak English and sort of fluent Portuguese, a bit of German, I would love to practice any of these languages or teach you Spanish. Hugs from here, hope to eventually find you in vrchat.

I don't mind paying to learn, but everything is catered to Americans and at decent prices in USD but currency conversations, here in the south, I pay like 8 times a much. As much as I want to learn, as a uni student, I cant justify an $80 monthly subscription with a $120 app and this that and the other.
