Remember: uncover your plants during the day so they dont become sun-sensitive and get weak/leggy in the dark!

I raised dairy goats many years. One year I tarped the kidding pen to avoid drafts. Bad idea. 3 of my babies got pneumonia. Vet treated and told me must have a lot of air exchange. Never had a problem again. I use loose housing with access to pasture 24/7. I have gravel on the floor and deep litter to have a good drainage. My pastures are all on sloped ground which helps.

That's super helpful! This is the 3rd time I've seen something like it. The barn is open to the pasture all the time and has good ventilation. Deep litter dirt floor.

I like how you did the double layer over the plants! It's never occurred to me to do that! I usually put in electric fence posts to keep the covers from crushing the plants. Your double layer is MUCH better! For next year, too late this year, it's been into the low 20's. I harvested all I could before it froze and still feeling blessed!! Prayers for your goats! God bless!

The water on the ground is just the way my ground is. I have to garden above ground in containers. I have a tiny garden. But I saw that and yeah, exactly the way my ground is. Turns into a swamp.

We're only have a dog in a fenced in backyard, but we used to having horrible runoff problems from our neighbors. We had a French drain installed in 2022 and we get NO puddles. You may have to install drainage to your pond to help your various areas drier for your animals.
@SageandStoneHomestead
@SageandStoneHomestead 11 месяцев назад
Around us those that can afford it install field tile. That's what it needs. Almost all of the 9.5 acres is this way. Field tile is expensive and an undertaking, and I'm grateful there are many ways to raise livestock. This only happens when it rains and it recedes in a couple days. But it rains often enough to not have small animals permanently out on it.

Wow, so much last minute stuff done and you got a lovely batch of greens to enjoy too! The early morning pictures of the frost was beautiful, really cool to see all the plants with the crystals of ice on them and am glad you were able to capture that and share it with us. Interesting to see the shifting of the bucks around, and appreciated hearing the reasons why. Hoping Shindy does well with the treatment, and am with you it's better safe seeing the symptoms she has (plus the weather coming in) than sorry.💚 💚

I lost all my broccoli and cabbage.😫 We just didn't have time to get it covered and we had a drizzly rain that we weren't expecting so by the time we could mess with them they were all wet and I figured they would freeze regardless. We had to choose between that and buttoning up some things on the barn. I haven't been out to check the goats yet but I hope they did ok. I hope Shindy gets better quickly!❤

@@SageandStoneHomestead I always have a million questions but I have another one lol. I learn so much from your channel! I left a bunch of pole beans on the plants to save seed. They got huge but weren't dry yet. I pulled them before the freeze. Can I still save the seeds? Same with a cucumber I was trying to save seeds from. It's huge but hadn't turned yellow or anything.

You can always try. Dry them out and do a germination test with a damp paper towel in a plastic bag! ♥

Sorry about Shindy getting sick. I hope you caught it in time and she's feeling better soon. Does the barn have a heater to keep it a bit warmer or is that not needed are the goats are acclimated to the cold? Heather, that braid looks so cute on you. Whoa! I just checked and our temps got down to 19 last night. I'm not ready for cold and winterrrr!! I've started wearing my cuddl-duds under my jeans and two layers of tops, as well as sitting with a small space heater on my feet. Sometimes I wish I could have stayed in peri-menopause where I was always warm!
@SageandStoneHomestead
@SageandStoneHomestead 11 месяцев назад
We use the barn floor as a heater. Usually we are not super cold until January and February, I Clean out the barn in November so there is a 6 week period of buildup that creates a composting type of heat on the floor for the coolest times. It works well. Buckets of water in the kidding stalls rarely freeze!

I can't wait until tomorrow because the freeze will be over for awhile. I am not ready for the cold. I have all of my fall/winter plants covered with clear totes, plastic sheeting and clear tarps so I'll be removing them tomorrow morning. But whoa I'm not ready for any cold. I'm freezing just thinking about it.

It still looks very nice down but wth is happening?! Both me and my twin have been experiencing thinning & loss. We are 46 so it seems a bit premature. I noticed my daughter, who is 29, is having some loss & bald patches too. One guess of mine is it could be related to EMF's. They have increased exponentially these past few years. Our use of smart devices and wifi should be limited or non-existent imo.

I hope Shindy recovers quickly and that no other goats suffer from our crazy up and down temperatures!!! I know you and I discussed the expense of tiling in the fields before. Have you ever looked online to see what grants or funding might be available in your county for soil conservation or agriculture improvements? At one time, we received funding to have a pond built on our farm. Your local ASCS office my have funds to help get your fields tiled. Just a thought! Thanks for sharing your day with us!!! Heather. have you thought of utilizing (allowing) your dog or Billies to assist you in harveting? As in harnessed to a harvest wagon, & pulling the load back to the farmstead house? It would involve harnesses & training, however given the challenges your homesteads, I offer this thought.
