Fun Fact: Harrison Ford damaged some ligaments in his leg during the filming of the scenes in the woods. He refused to take surgery until the end of filming so that his character would keep the limp. The limp can be seen in any subsequent scene where Richard Kimble is running. Also, Tommy Lee Jones reportedly told Joe Pantoliano, "It's not like anyone is going to win any awards for this film." However, the movie was eventually nominated for 7 Academy Awards and 3 Golden Globes, with Tommy Lee Jones himself ironically winning both the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for this film. Harrison Ford was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actor, but lost to Tom Hanks for his performance in Philadelphia (1993).

FUN FUGITIVE FACTS: - The wrecking of the train was done practically. A real bus and a real train were destroyed, captured by multiple cameras. There were only a few miniature insert shots, and Harrison Ford leaping from the train was done optically. - Production was well into shooting before the script was even completed. - The famous "doughnut with sprinkles" line was improvised by Tommy Lee Jones. - Harrison Ford required surgery after blowing out his knee during the county jail chase scene. There are shots in that chase where he's seen limping. - After production received the thumbs up from the Chicago mayor, the film crew was allowed to shoot the scenes in the St. Patrick's Day street parade guerilla-style on the fly. Apart from a few key people, nobody in the parade knew that a movie was being shot. - Actress Sela Ward was hand-picked by Harrison Ford to play his wife, Helen. - The banter between Gerard and the US Marshals was improvised. - The actor playing the police sound engineer who was working on Kimble's phone call with his lawyer was John Cusack's brother. - The actor who played Kimble's lawyer was John Cusack's father. - To keep the element of authenticity regarding the press, all reporters featured in the film were actual Chicago journalists. - Tommy Lee Jones won the "Best Supporting Actor" Oscar.

Harrison Ford was once the no.1 Box office draw of all time. This film here is part of that legend and his career. Tommy Lee Jones won his only Oscar from this performance. Well played as the obsessed lawman without any clue of the truth and only taking down Kimble. Very few tv series become feature films and successful ones at that. But this story was worked into an incredible adaptation. The 1960s show was actually re-broadcasted on TV Land following the film's release. There was a sequel called "U.S. Marshalls" in 1997. TLJ reprised his character with a few other actors from The Fugitive. Wesley Snipes and Robert Downey Jr. were co-stars and it did well commercially. Unexpected sequel, but with exceptional storytelling. You could check it out or not. BTW, Air Force One (also from 1997) is another smash with Harrison Ford that you'll definitely enjoy.

The cops wanted Kimble dead at the end as they thought he killed the cop on the train. The water's impact at the dam was a lesser issue because he hit water that was also falling first and was breaking up the surface of the water below. If you watch highdive competitions, they send bubbles up from under the water to break the surface tension. He still likely would have died. I don't think the water pressure was high enough to prevent him from hitting the concrete behind the water. If he dropped down on still water, that would have been a full-on collision.

The second biggest box office hit of 1993 (Jurassic Park being the first). The Fugitive was actually a very popular TV series between 1963 and 1967 that was rerun to death. Each episode Richard Kimble, while being pursued, would encounter different people/towns/situations and help in some way before moving on. It's quite astounding that modern audiences seem entirely unaware that The Fugitive, as well as Mission Impossible I might add, were crazy popular TV series before they became the films everyone raves about today. The Fugitive didn't swing that far away from its origins, except to remove the weekly story and have it focus primarily on Kimble's search for answers to prove himself innocent. Mission Impossible, certainly by the second film, was entirely unrecognisable really - except for the music (dum-dum-dum-dum; dum-dum-dum-dum; doo-da-duh; doo-da-duh; doo-da-duh; dar-dum) which was adapted from the series for the films. Tommy Lee Jones was practically unknown before this film, which earned him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar. He stole the show from Harrison Ford. They even made a sequel/spin-off, without Harrison Ford, called U.S. Marshals with Wesley Snipes. I honestly don't remember if that was any good else I might recommend it.

He also was well known for his 80's role in the movie "Coal Miners Daughter." He received high praise for that role. He was also nominated for an Oscar for "JFK," before he won the Oscar for "The Fugitive." I was aware of him well before "The Fugitive." But then again, I had a big crush on him, so that could be why I knew he was. Yes, I know. He has always been old. Okay, so I have weird taste in men. But now I'm old, so it's alright.

Great reaction! Couple things - the Chicago PD wasn't in on the crime with Charles, they perceived him as a cop killer because of the officer that was shot on the El train. At that point, all they cared about was getting vengeance on the person who killed one of their own. Also, as others have mentioned, the bus/Train crash was done with a real bus and a real train. The derailed train was left where it landed and is there to this day in Sylva, North Carolina - you can visit it and check it out.

The whole point of the movie is that the One-Armed-Man used to be a cop, which is how he was able to set the police against Kimble, he'd know their training and the right type of evidence to plant. I think he also intended to make it look like a murder/suicide but he made a great mistake, he underestimated Kimble. There is a saying known as the Wise Man's Fear - fear the calm before a storm, the night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man.

Like others have said, this was a popular TV series way back in the day. What a lot of people don't know is that there were serious rumors that there was an alternate ending to the series that was never aired. The series ends with the one armed man finally caught and Kimble being exonerated, like in the movie. The alternate ending had Kimble and the detective walking along the beach, the detective talking to him about how it was good the real culprit had finally been caught and that now Kimble could go off and live his life a free man. Kimble thanks him, the detective leaves, then, as Kimble walks along the beach alone with the sun setting, Kimble reaches down and disconnects his prosthetic arm, something no one else has noticed up until now. Dr. Kimble was the real killer all along! According to the story, that alternate ending tested so badly that the scene was buried, never shown to the public, and everyone involved in the shot was sworn to secrecy.

You have already read this in the comments, and I fully support them: HF's character, "The Fugitive" is based on the former TV series. There's this sequel "US Marshals" that is also pretty good. Tommy Lee Jones is a top tier actor, check other of his films "The Client", "Double Jeopardy", "The Siege", "Rules of Engagement", even "Volcano" and "Men in Black" are fun to watch. Re Harrison Ford, you should watch "Witness", "Patriot Games", "Clear and Present Danger", which are less known perhaps, but still really good movies.

The template for this film was a series "The Fugitive" from the years 1963 to 1967, the first two seasons in black and white, then in color. Kimble has been on the run for four years in search of the one-armed man who killed his wife. Tracking him down, Marshal Gerard. At the end of the series he confronts the real killer and is allowed to leave the courtroom as a free man. I was fascinated by this series as a kid, and by the 1993 film adaptation. fan fact: At the time, Gerard actor Barry Morse received many letters from fans who could not distinguish between fiction and reality, in which he was verbally abused and asked to leave Kimble alone.

I am old enough to remember the days of the Identikit pictures you'd sometimes see them on TV it works by building a face by using a set of present generic features printed on clear plastic and overlaid so a witness would choose face shape, hair, eyes etc to make a picture that looked like the bad guy then they'd tidy it up a little the pictures on the board are the result they will resemble someone but since they are made up of generic feature sets they were fairly rough so there is no artist to blame. Sometimes they would get a sketch artist in to refine the picture but not for this shot. You guys need to check out one of my favourite Tom Lee Jones movies - ' The Park is Mine ' where he plays a disgruntle Vietnam Vet who takes over central park to protest the treatment of vets

I saw this film six times in the theater -- just loved it! It's been a long-standing joke in my family to yell, like Jone's character: "Doctor Kimble!" Then to add, "I love you!!" : D Such a fun film and super-fun watching you fellas watching it. Thanks!

I remember my mom loved watching reruns of The Fugitive when it would be on. She loved this movie when she saw it, as did my father and I. Sadly she would pass away less than two years after the movie debuted in theaters. Memories of a better time. Thanks for reacting to this guys.

I actually met Tommy Lee Jones in Chicago when they filmed the Fugitive Part 2 on 78th and Euclid. That's the south side of Chicago. He was very nice. At that time he said they were calling the movie the Fugitive Part 2. He told everyone that they didn't have a name for the movie yet. The movie was eventually named U.S Marshall's. He answered everyone's questions out there that day it was at least 100 spectators. Someone asked why they decided to film in the 3 flat building they chose he said, You can add your house to the filming registry, and when they look for sites to film movies, they may pick your property. The very first scene of the movie is down the street from my parents' old home.

the fact is that this movie was one of the Oscars nominated that year and was well deserve cause is great....and for all of us that actually saw the TV. show back in the 60's and 70's was even better cause we saw the end of it....but it is a surprise to me that you kept saying that he couldnt survive this or that....maybe you Dont know but theres a lot of true stories about people who survived even worse situations than this one....like that story about the people from Uruguay that had a plane accident here at the Argentinian Cordillera de Los Andes back in 1972....or the people who survived that accident in the middle of the Ocean that inspired the book of " Moby Dick ".... you might think that is imposible to survive after an accident or a life threat situation but the truth is that even now a lot of people can prove you wrong.....

As for the scene on the dam, the director stated in the "making off" that they threw several lifelike dolls down the dam, all, all of them were later found completely torn and broken. So the director concluded that no human would have even remotely survived that jump.

Fun fact: The St. Patrick day parade was the real parade. That's why you see in some shots people doing double takes when they see Harrison Ford. They didn't tell anyone in the parade they were filming.

I was a big Harrison Ford fan before this, but this movie made me a fan of Tommy Lee Jones too. For the train crash scene, the director wanted it to look real, so they actually put a bus on the tracks and ran a train into it. They filmed it from like a dozen different angles because, of course, they could only do one take.

38:42 I wouldn't be too hard on that doctor who missed checking the x-ray. Remember that they were in the middle of a crisis, a bus crash and there were multiple casualties to deal with. In that sort of situation it would be easy for someone going back and forth between patients to miss something. Kimble was able to keep a cool head because he was just watching.

Five years after this film, a sequel to it came out, called U.S. Marshalls (1998). Some other people have mentioned it in the comments, but I just want to reiterate, it is definitely a must-see follow-up to this. They bring back Tommy Lee Jones as Deputy Sam Gerard, along with some of his crew, Cosmo, Biggs, Newman. But this time, it's Wesley Snipes they're chasing after, and who else gets thrown into the mix? Non other than Robert Downy Jr., that's right. Go check it out, boys, you'll love it!

The train and bus from the crash scene are still in Western NC where some of the movie was filmed. The Great Smokey Mountain Railroad asked that they be left behind for tourists to view.

here's a little factoid for you guys: the story writer is Roy Huggins. He is famous for all sorts of tv police dramas, including his most famous "The Rockford Files" which he was from start to end. IMO greatest private detective show ever made with one of the best actors, James Garner.

1st, Fantastic reaction!!! Y'all were boppin' to the soundtrack. Nimble Kimbal is a win. You guys are the first to really worry about his original wound. I love this movie, and literally, nobody else even thought about it besides you two. Respect to your attention to detail. Also, the drug dealer stringing out 12 year olds, y'all were on him quick. Then the pushing the person at the train station is hilarious. I remember when y'all were back with less than 12k, l loved it then. Don't stop. I'm sharing your stuff with my friends and getting them subbed. For your consideration with the polls; Hard Candy, Runaway Jury, Rosewood, Heist(Gene Hackman), The Saint(Val Kilmer), Arlington Road. See how they do. All bangers.
