I’m often asked, if I could only have three Fujinon lenses, which ones would I choose and why. In this video I talk about my three favorite lenses from Fuji, why I chose each one and show examples of images I’ve shot with each lens.
Here are links to some of the lens comparison videos I noted in the video:
Fuji XF 14mm vs XF 16mm - What's the best wide prime for you?
• Fuji XF 14mm vs XF 16m...
Fuji XF 35mm f1.4 vs XF 35mm f2 (warning music on the intro of this one)
• Fuji XF 35mm f1.4 vs X...
And some a couple more videos I did on the 16mm and the 56mm:
Fujifilm X-Pro2 and XF 16mm f1.4 R WR - Great Combination
• Fujifilm X-Pro2 and XF...
Fuji XF 56mm f1.2 R - Emotional Impact
• Fuji XF 56mm f1.2 R - ...

Thanks Quintin! Yeah man, I've seen a lot of great photographers doing beautiful work with a 70-200mm setup, but for me I really need to be closer. Otherwise I feel to disconnected, more like a technician at that point. Having the connection gives me and the person I'm creating with, much stronger photos. Thanks man!

I started my journey into Fuji a couple of months ago with a used X-T1 and the 18-55mm. I was so impressed with the system that I sold it and got the X-Pro2 and now have these 3 lenses. Just last night I got the 56mm and took a couple of pictures of my wife and literally spent maybe 10-15 minutes just looking at them. It's REALLY sharp, even wide open and the bokeh is spectacular. My wife seamed happy for me, patiently listening to my rambling. It's a good thing that she has no idea of the price of the system. For me, I now feel that I don't need any more lenses and hopefully I can now control my gear acquisition syndrom or at least direct it towards cheaper thing (I sound like an alcoholic in denial). Anyway, thanks for all the great videos /Kjell

Very cool, Kjell - yeah man, that 56mm is really stunning. Makes me wish I was doing portraiture every day! I know what you mean, I'm really satisfied with these three lenses. Every once in a while I might think about buying maybe the 90mm, or one of the telephoto zooms, but within a few seconds I can easily remind myself that I don't need any other lenses. Thanks man!

Thanks very much! It's funny, because I'll look at others work that are pushed so much, as far as the high contrast, and I'll think that is so beautiful that I need to maybe back off on the blacks and whites a bit... but then the next image I do any post work on... I still end up bringing the blacks down as low as possible and punching up the whites! I guess we are who we are :) Thanks again!

Hi Ted, first time commenter here. Love your videos man, your enthusiasm is infectious. Just bought the 16mm for my x-t1 (based largely on your positive feedback and championing it!), can't wait to get out there and use it. I have a request please Ted... As a total amateur myself and just getting into photography as a hobby I'd love for you to make a video or two about your daily/weekly routine as a professional photographer. Out of all the people doing photography videos on RU-vid yours is a voice I really enjoy hearing (I mean that figuratively and literally haha) and I'd love to know more about how you divide up your day and week, what jobs you select to take on and how you choose, how you balance working with still going out and shooting for yourself, how you got into it in the first place, some of your proudest photography moments... things like that. I think all of your followers would enjoy that inspiration as much as your great insights into the gear itself. Keep it coming man
@TedVieira

Hey Daniel, thank you very much, man! And congratulations on your 16mm for your X-T1! Man, that's a fantastic combination!! Yeah, I'd be happy to make a video(s) along those lines. I think it's important to talk about more than just the gear, as although the gear is very important, there's so much more to it. Thanks again, Daniel!

It has to be said, with so many photographers giving their views about photography and equipment, that this man Vieira is excellent. The excellent cadence of the voice helps, although that is just 'there'. What isn't just natural, instead considered, and the really good thing here - and not just for me as someone who uses the Fuji X system - is the enthusiasm and clear explanation of choices made.

Other than having the 35 f1.4 instead of the f2, those are my three go to lenses for pretty much everything. Did 10 days in Edinburgh and Paris last summer with that trilogy and 2 bodies and never wished I had anything else. I do love the 90 f2 but it's a bit more limited for use than the big three.

got all three, no doubt great lenses, I got the 35f2 about a month ago what a lovely lens, I am happy sold my 32 for this 35! I still think the 23mm is the great lens for street, way bigger than 35 but the upcoming 23mmf2 should take care of that problem! Good to see you again Ted, as always so passionate with your hardware!

Hey Ali, hope all is well, man! Yeah, I've been shooting street with the 35 more this year, but the 23 is really a lot more versatile. I'm looking forward to the 23mm f2 lens coming out later this year. That should be pretty fantastic little lens. Thanks man!

My top three: 23/1.4 56/1.2 18-55 I'm not a pro, I'm an enthusiast who shoots a little bit of everything with an emphasis on street photography. So, the 18-55 covers a lot of general photography bases for me. My favorite lens is the 23/1.4. It's a classic. 35mm equivalence is my favorite, and to have a FAST 35 is a dream for me. Speaking of dreams, the 56/1.2 is like living in a dream world with that bokeh!
@TedVieira
@TedVieira 8 лет назад
Good lineup, man! Yeah, the 23 1.4 is a cool lens. I'm looking forward to the new 23 f2. To be honest though, I'm really not unhappy with the current 23, although I know the new one will most likely outperform the current. Thanks man!

Hi Ted. Just wanted to say thanks for all your videos and this one in particular. I recently switched from Canon fullframe (5D4) to X-T2. Big step but I couldn't be happier after 10+ years of heavy equipment! I now have the 56/1.2 and 35/2 and today I picked up the mighty 16/1.4. What a lens! I didn't think a wide-angle could be so much fun. Thanks for pushing my decisions in the right direction! Cheers from Sweden! // Henry

Well you have been an amazing help. I stopped shooting back in the film days (Nikon FA and F3) - only had primes, 24 / 35 / 50 /105 (all manual). I picked up a X70 just to take some snap shots - WOW. The best pocket camera ever. It got me excited again and I love the Fuji system. It was like getting back on a bike again - all manual and similar layout to my old Nikon manual bodies. I found your videos and they have been very helpful. I just ordered the XT2 with the 16mm - with that 1.4, wow. Seems like probably one of Fuji's best lens. I also took a shot on the new 50mm F2. I am going to start there, haven;t seen much reviews on the 50mm F2 - very new, but I figured I needed a second lens and pushed it to the farther end of focal lengths from the 16mm and also after spending big money on the 16mm and T2, I needed to drop a little less money on my next purchase. Questions: I too usually only traveled with 2 or 3 primes. (24 / 50 or 35 / 105 - full frame in the old days) - use to carry one in my pocket and one on the camera - hated bags. Now with the 16mm and the 50mm, I was thinking about either the 23mm f2 or the 35mm f2. Which of the two would you get next, knowing what I have? I saw the Rokinon 85mm 1.4 with a fuji x mount. All manual focus, but wow - love the compression and softer look. At around $300, do you have any thoughts on it? Not many reviews of that lens on the fuji - but the reviews I did read seem to really like it. Do you shoot any inferred? If so - any recommendations on the fuji? Thank for the great videos.

Could not agree more. I've only used the 56 as a rental, but I will get it eventually. Since I'm always on a budget, I went for a 56mm Voigtlander Nokton, which is about half the price and beautiful as well, but ... manual lens, plus you have to use an adapter for Fuji; it's got a Nikon mount. There's a humble little lens that makes me almost as happy as your three, and that's the modest little 27mm pancake, especially for the street. Surprisingly fast AF, no fuss, and tiny.

People rave about that 35 f/2 so much, I've been tempted to get one (and I really don't NEED it). That's definitely a solid trinity you have there. I currently have the 23mm 1.4 and the 56mm 1.2 R. I picked up the Samyang 12mm 2.0 to do my real estate photography with. If I had to choose 3 Fuji lenses and only three for the rest of my life (dramatic, right?) I would choose: 1) 10-24mm f/4--I would use it for real estate work and would shoot between 10-14mm. I Don't like the size necessarily (I would prefer Fuji make a small 12mm prime), but Fuji only makes as wide as 14mm (21mm equiv.) for their primes. 2) 23mm f/1.4--This is my go-to for general purpose shooting. Love the size, the 35mm focal length and the 1.4 aperture. 3) 56mm f/1.2 R --Almost goes without saying, doesn't it? This lens is awesome to use. The 85mm focal length is one of my favorites and this lens is SHARP wide open (which is where I stay most of the time when shooting with this). Side note: My desert island camera and body combo would be my X-T1 with the 23mm 1.4. I love my X-T1 about as much as I love my coffee in the morning (and that's saying a lot).
@TedVieira
@TedVieira 8 лет назад
Yeah man, you can't go wrong with that 23mm focal range - you can shoot such a wide variety of shots. I'm hoping the X200 sticks with that lens - has been some talk of going to a 28mm (ff equiv), but I hope that's just a rumor. Yeah, it would be cool if Fuji made a nice wide prime like 12mm. I probably wouldn't use it too much, but would be a nice addition. Thanks man!

favorites are: 14mm, 16-55mm, 27mm. Had the 16mm, nice too, might get it again some day. But 14mm is sharper and more adequate for landscape. About to sell the 18-55mm due to redundancy. Looking hard at the 50mm for a street/travel setup: 14, 27 and 50.The 90mm is in the FOV too....:-). All sharp, sharp sharp. Fuji X-T1 and X-T2, X70.

So far, I've only been able to afford the 35mm f2 out of these three, and I love it dearly (just like you, I ditched the 35 1.4 for it). The 16mm has been on my wish list forever, and will be my next big investment. For those who agree with you on your choices here and are on a budget, maybe my solution to the portrait-lens problem would come in handy: I bought a lovely Voigtlander 58mm Nokton 1.4. This lens costs only about half as much as the Fujinon 56, is non-AF and comes with a Nikon mount. So you'll need an adapter, and you'll have to teach yourself to focus manually. It's a steep learning curve if you've never done it before, especially at that focal length! But after the pain comes a lot of gain. This lens is really magic.
@TedVieira
@TedVieira 8 лет назад
Yeah Johannes, that's the cool thing about getting adapters for older manual focus lenses. You can really find some pretty impressive glass for a good price. And I actually really love manual focus if it's an actual MF lens, not by wire. Thanks man!

Totally agree. September I will buy the XT-2 and change to Fuji in a big bang . 16 and 56 is a must so 100% sure I will buy them in that same deal. 35 , I'll have to think about that one too, maybe have a kind of try and buy deal , like if I like it, buy it and don't pay the rent. Also want the 55 to 140 zoom, that's the 70 -200 we all used to have in " the mirror world" ;-) Hope they will have those FlashQ's available here too at that time. Man I can't wait and every time I see your pictures samples, the waiting gets harder and harder. Nice weekend man, stay cool.
@TedVieira
@TedVieira 8 лет назад
Yeah man, I know, I'm horrible at waiting, especially when I really want something. You'll have to let me know how you like the X-T2. You know what's cool about the 35mm f2 - man, that price is ridiculous, and sometimes they'll even have it on sale for $299... To me, for what I shoot, I think it's the coolest of all the Fuji lenses for everyday use. Yeah, sometimes I think about maybe picking up one of the longer zooms. It wouldn't get used very often, but would be something completely different from what I have. Thanks, Rob, hope your weekend is great!

Besides an extensive Nikon full frame kit, I have the a Fuji with 23 f1.4 and two excellent lighwheight kitlenses giving me 16 to 240mm. I love the difference in size and weight. But I would not have thought about getting the f2 version over the f1.4 version. I rather have more light coming in and less DOF if I want to, than having a more compact package. Don't forget, it's still aps-c, not full frame. F1.4 on this camera gives the look of a f2 lens on full frame. But I get that F2 version of the 35mm has faster focus.

I have been shooting for about 30 years. I love Fujifilm. I own three Fujifilm cameras (including a GFX50s) and several lenses. And, 56mm f/1.2 is the shame of the Fujifilm. It has focus hunting issues; it cannot snap the focus. And it makes an annoying internal noise while trying to focus. I sent it back to Fuji and they sent it back to me saying that it fits the company standards. My only hope is that the company releases a new firmware update that fixes the issues. So unexpected from Fujifilm, so frustrating... : (

Thanks very much, Leia, I appreciate that! Ha! That's funny about almost buying them again. :) Very cool that your using these cameras for your gigs. I've really loved shooting with Fuji gear for about a year now. I picked up the original X100 in 2011, but didn't start shooting exclusively with Fuji for work until last September. Great stuff. I've been shooting a lot more film lately but today I took my X-Pro2 out to do some street shooting and man, that camera just amazes me every time I shoot it. Thanks again, Leia!

Thanks for your impressions, Ted. I'm just new to the Fuji kit (was using Sony) and really appreciate your thoughts. I bought my x-e2 with the 23mm f1.4 but I think I'm going to sell that and get the 35mm f2 and then just deciding on either the 14mm or 16mm. The 56mm is a certainty...just have to wait a bit for my wallet to recover. ;) Thanks again, Ted!

Great trio selection. I'm pretty much in the same boat and in accordance with your reasons why you like the ones you do. I use the X-Pro2. The 3 lenses I took with me on a trip and pretty much in my small kit bag are the 18mm f/2, 35mm /2 & 56mm f/1.2. It's a good range of focal lengths that pretty much have me covered. I would go with the 16mm f1.4, I hear and see great things about it, but the size and inability to use the OVF in the X-Pro2 effectively kind of kept this one out of my kit (for now).. I would also love an even wider angle with the 14mm f/2.8, but again, it's the fact I would not be able to effectively use it with the OVF. Yeah, I am picking lenses which allow me to use both the OVF AND EVF on my X-Pro2. I feel if I get anything outside of that, I am short-changing myself from being able to use the X-Pro2's optics fully.. and, let's face it, the unique hybrid optics is a major selling point for anybody who wants an X-Pro2 above all else. That being said, it's not that I would never get a wider lens than the 18mm nor a longer lens than the 56mm, but I'm working on a tight budget and trying to keep the lenses I feel I need and have maximum usage with the X-Pro2, thus my lens choices. You can use the 90mm f/2 with OVF, there are frame lines, but you're bordering on the frame lines being a bit too small, usable, and I would say not ideal with the OVF... I don't know.. I'll see down the line if I really want the 90mm's rendering. I'm hoping if rumors of a new Fuji 8-16mm f/2.8 lens is going to actually be made, I think I'd opt for that for a wide to super wide angle lens choice. I might as well get my widest focal range covered in 1 nice pro lens. On the tele end, the 90mm is nice, but I'm feeling I'd get more usage and versatility from the 50-140mm f/2.8.. it also has OIS which would be considerably better when working at the more extreme tele ranges. I still prefer primes with my X-Pro2, so if and when I do get the 2 pro lenses mentioned above, I also hope my budget will allow for an X-T2.. I much prefer the X-T2 body with the larger pro lenses. Lastly, I had added the 23mm f/1.4 and 27mm f/2.8 to my original trio listed above but eventually sold them. The 27mm f/2.8 was a nice super-compact lightweight pancake lens for those moments when you want to keep as light and small as possible with 1 good general purpose lens. I loved the images from the 23mm f/1.4 as well. I would have kept it, but i want to keep my X-Pro2 kit as light and compact as possible, so I sold it in anticipation to get the new 23mm f/2 due to be announced soon (September?) and released shortly after that, hopefully by or before the end of 2016 this year. In either case, both the 23 & 27 fall in between my widest 18mm and mid 35mm lenses and at this time do not feel I NEED them.. more of a luxury.. and honestly, when looking over how I use my kit, although I liked having the choices to switch up my focal length and try something a little different every few days or weeks, I feel it was still too many choices for me to deal with and wanted to keep it simple and basically force myself to work with the few choice lenses I decided to keep, which are the 18, 35 & 56. Been pretty happy with this decision. I still feel there's room to squeeze in the 23mm f/2 when it's available.. a nice 35mm equivalent prime lens is always good to have, but the current trio works very well as is. Going be bring the 3 for the Fujilove Global Photowalk this weekend.. actually, it's tomorrow! Happy shooting!
@TedVieira
@TedVieira 8 лет назад
Yeah Wing, I LOVE using the OVF. I'll switch back to the EVF if I have to, but so much more enjoyable to use the OVF. You're right, the 16 is pretty chunky and can eat up a lot of the real estate of the OVF, especially with the cool aftermarket hood. I can still use the OVF with that setup, but it's like you're continually having to look over someone's shoulder who's standing in front of you. :) Sounds like you're pretty set and have everything covered. Yeah man, I'm looking forward to the new 23mm f2 lens too. That range is just too versatile! Thanks Wing!

Hey Ted! Awesome vid! My trinity lenses are: XF 16mm F1.4 XF 35mm F2 XF 90mm F2 All are weather resistant and I'm quite happy with the combo. I also want to add that I have the Mitakon 35mm F0.95 in case I want to get that magic pop. Lately, I have also been using it more than the XF just because MF is such a delight with the X-pro2. Also the Mitakon feels really good on the hands. You should try it!

Hi Ted. Great choices of awesome Fujinon lenses! It's interesting that you shoot 100% primes. I can certainly see the advantages to that, ie., compact, light-weight, fast, etc. However, I also find that Fujinon makes some awesome zooms such as the XF 16-55 f/2.8 WR, among others. As landscape shooter, I find that zoom to be tack-sharp, and quite versatile as well. I also love the XF 90, as it's possibly the sharpest lens I've ever used in my 35 years in photography. Thanks again, sir!

Almost the same setup as you Ted. Or perhaps it was your previous setup; I have the 14mm, 35mm and 56mm. It works out nicely for me as it's exactly 21mm between each lens, and is of course an equivalent 21mm, 50mm and 85mm setup. I also have the 55-200mm zoom for the occasional telephoto shoot. I aim to supplement this with the 23mm f2 when that's released, as I use my X100 a lot too. When I get that I may have to rethink my setup!

Ted, great reviews and great gravelly voice! I have the 35mm f1.4. I hear what you are saying about the f2.0 but I do like that extra stop of light the 1.4 gives me. But that 35/52mm focal length is so magical! Great for street photography, portraits, landscapes even. My go to lens. Next bit of kit I want is the 56mm f1.2. And maybe the 16-55mm f2.8.

I heard the 56 is super noisy when focusing and the quality difference between that and the 50 f2 is unnoticeable.
@TedVieira
@TedVieira 2 года назад
Yeah, the 56 is one of their older lenses and does make a little noise. Nothing like the 35 f1.4. And the 56 can hunt for focus a bit in low light. Again, not as bad as the 35 1.4. But the image quality from the 56 (and the 35 for that matter) is pretty gorgeous. I have shot with the 50 f2, so I can't comment on that. Maybe if you have a chance to rent both lenses for a few days to see which one is a better fit for you.

There are two well known combo systems of focal lengths in the FF world of primes: 24+50 and 35+85. The wider you go the more attention you have to pay to background and angle of the camera. That's why I'd say that Fuji 16mm is not for newbies. I use Canon gear for pro-work, stick with 24L 35L 85L, but have my XE1 with 18-55 and 35/1.4 to every day and travel needs. Quite happy with this kit, wish Fuji made 16-55 instead of 18-55 as a kit - 28mm on FF is one of the boring focal length ever.

Still looking to get the 56 to complete the trinity. So far I have the 16 and the 23. Both are very great lenses, and I have no doubt the 56 will match up in quality. (: Although, I'm planning to give the 23 f/2 a go when it's released, and see if it can win me over the f/1.4's manual clutch. Thanks for sharing, Ted!
@TedVieira
@TedVieira 8 лет назад
Yeah, I agree, I'm looking forward to seeing the 23 f2 when it comes out. I know what you mean about the manual clutch - I love that feature. I wish they could've worked that into the design of the 35 f2, but I guess it wouldn't have been practical for that style. It's setup more like a Leica or Zeiss design which keeps it nice and small/compact. (the clutch is still cool though!) :)

I'm buyng 16 and 56 next month. And about 56 vs 90 mm - math is simple: while 90mm can give you greater compression, if you shoot a lot indoors, with 90mm you could end up with a lot of head shots and nothing else :-) That's from my expiriance using canon FF, 135mm was only really usefull once I shooted outdoors.

I love to watch your youtube videos. Very helpful videos and I have to say it is YOU that converted me to Fuji. Also always relaxing listening to your voice and advice. What I wanted to ask you is I know you love the 35mm f2 WR. Do you think this one would be a better starting lens for me or the upcoming 23mm f2 WR? Generalist use - street, pictures of my family, some closer flower pictures etc Then depending on the choice which prime would you add to that, the 56mm 1.2 for nice family portraits? I would appreciate any help. For now I preordered the 23mm f2 WR but want to hear your opinion if I should go for the 35 instead
