If I was a millionaire I’d buy a cheaper high mileage first gen SLR and get it upgraded by MSO. Then drive it everywhere as a daily. Nobody really knows these cars are worth so much money. They just think it’s a old SL. So you are far less likely to get into trouble.

Phenomental video. I remember a Chris Harris interview with Chris Goodwin saying how McLaren initially went from benchmarking a 550 Maranello during early SLR development to latter hot lapping the SLR against an Enzo at Paul Ricard.

I'm one of the few that actually liked the 5 speed auto transmission. It's actually suited very well to the torque monster V8. The transmission itself shifts gears quickly, it just doesn't respond well to the paddle shift or buttons like it was in early AMG models. Even modern Mercs in Comfort mode have the habit of not responding to paddle shift exactly when you want it to. There is a half second delay. In short, it's something to get used to. I can only imagine what a modern 9 speed automatic would do to the SLR's performance, Merc use it on V12 Maybach models.

I think the biggest misunderstanding about the car is to put the SLR in the super Sports car category when it is more like Super Grand tourer. They are the Duesenbergs of our time. I expect these cars rise in value just for their usability, visibility. They might never reach the values of a Enzo or Carrera GT for the sake of the numbers produced but the car has and will have it's fans

My opinions and passion of the SLR are 100% inline with yours. It seems most just looked at all the negative aspects of the car and really used Gordon Murray as permission to mock it's design and purpose in the market. I have a budget SLR a 2006 SL55 with the P30 performance package. Only 45 cars were ordered and imported to the USA. Not officially - IMO the rarest AMG of all! If you ever do a story on the R230 please contact me and I can provide more than just technical specs of the $14K upgrade over an regular SL55. When I drive her, I sometimes, not all the time - pretend I'm in a SLR 722S Roadster. Heck, dreams are always free right?

Since SLR was the only vehicle in history that came out from join collaboration from two well know manufacturer giants; here are some facts regarding maintenance of SLR that no one would want to hear: -The hood costs $100,000 to replace. -Brakes are $50,000 each. All 4 for $200,000. Now Mercedes/McLaren do propose a method to fixing them if you're not comfortable with the cost to repair/replace, and the process is that you( the owner ) take the vehicle on a track, get it up to 120/130mph and slam on the brakes, and do this 4-6 times. The heat would actually repair the damaged/wore out brakes. Reason why it is this much expensive is this the only vehicle that was a joint venture between Mercedes and McLaren and most parts are actually made by Mercedes or McLaren, there are no parts lying around for it. But either way this car is really beautiful.

Very informative , yet entertaining all the best 👏 . If I become a billionaire/ or a multimillionaire at least , I know it won't happen in a billion years 1st car I'd buy is an SLR Stirling Moss. What a a machine !. even today l'm sure it'll turn more heads than a Bugatti or any other hypercar. The 5 speed transmission is crap but who cares!, the looks and presence, and the monstrous torque is unmatched.

Small potatoes, but I was happy to see someone thought it important enough to have the SLR ride on symmetrical wheels, left and right. Too many high-end cars that have angular wheel spokes just throw a set from the right side onto the left side, where those left-leaning spokes on one side are now right-leaning spokes on the other side. Excellent detail to whoever is responsible.

For a car made in partnership with a British manufacturer, its odd that they never made a right hand drive version.

Enzo and Carrera GT ate SLR up😅 these were tge trinity of 2000s but Carrera GT and Enzo were better. Especially Carrera GT it's the nest sounding car with the LFA.

the SLR was also popular Cuz PARIS HILTON had one and was photographed and filmed in it quite alot. And thats where the photo of "the Holy Trinity" took place 🤩 #ICONIC

I've seen the premiere of the showcar in 1999 and the series model in 2003 live in Frankfort. The showcar is still today my favorite car design!

The SLR McLaren is one of the all time from engine greats. The other two are the 300SL and the Nissan GTR. Ground breakers in the front engine car world
