This is one hell of a car. I think it held the FASTEST track time on Top Gear for quite a while. One of the cars that will appreciate in value like crazy.

It hasn’t appreciated. You can still buy them for less than their original MSRP. I’m surprised they haven’t appreciated greatly though. It’s a timeless, stunningly beautiful design! The SLR is extremely underrated!

I'm writing this comment in 2019: As a teenager, I had this car on a rip-out poster from one of those magazines. I STILL want this car! I know there are 1000hp super sportscars with so much electronics, but I can see myself cruising on the weekends. I hope to one day own it and maybe a 1950s SL 300 roadster! 🙏

Every time Jay Leno mentions the 300sel 6.3 I cry a little because I sold mine. I couldn't afford to restore it so I sold it so someone can do it justice, Couldn't see a car like that end up in a junk yard. What I would do to own another one.

A friend of mine worked for McLaren as a design engineer and was responsible for everything in front of the bulkhead on the SLR. The main issues were all related to the immense heat generated and it's efficient removal. The heat was even melting the cast aluminium fins on the air slats so they had to revert to milling the fins from blocks of aluminium. Apparently, it makes a difference.

One of my all time favorite videos. And to add to Jay when he says he wishes Mercedes came up with a manual gearbox: I wish Mercedes came back with manual gearboxes for us regular folks as well, not just in the SLR: but also in the SLK, SL, E coupe etc etc. I mean an E coupe or an SLK should be a pleasure to drive again, not a car for 90 year olds. What has happened to this wonderful brand?

Hello Jay Leno Is your Mercedes SLR number 0001 ?? - I use to work for McLaren Automotive Composite Division in the UK back in 2003, when the bodyshell of your car was first born. I was a Support Engineer and the only employee allowed to take pictures inside the factory and was able to record when the 1st Production SLR Bodyshells were made. There was a commemorative group photo taken of Job 1, the 1st Completed Bare Shell alongside a Pre-production Completed Car, as it was about to leave the McLaren Composite factory in Portsmouth, UK. It was then transported to the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, UK, where it would be Painted and Fully Assembled with the Engine and Running Gear to the Completed Car. I remember the 1st Production SLR (number 1) was Sold at Auction in America, I think for $1.2million Dollars and was bought by an American Mercedes Dealership. These were Interesting and Brilliant times...

I remember seeing this in NFS Most Wanted years ago and always being amazed by how it looked. Just so elegant and sounded like a damn beast. This, the Carrera GT, and the M3 GTR from that game always caught me in this magical way. Always been a dream car of mine. Knowing more now that I'm older, especiialy about names like McLaren, REALLY love this car now.

I think this car has the most beautiful shape ever! From every angle you look at it, every part of it, is different than anything else and so beautiful. The only car that could beat it in terms of beauty would be a newer SLR. There are a few lines, a few parts that look a little bit too simple. But that is due to the limitations of the technology of that time. A new face-lifted SLR, designed and constructed with the help of the new technology would help Mercedes keep the crown for many years to come!

I'm a huge Mercedes Benz fan. I work on a dozen or so every year in my body shop. Love the way they are built. You really have to take them apart to fully appreciate the build quality, and intelligent design of the cars.

I remember seeing this car years ago at the NY Auto Show. I don't think a single person thought this car was ugly, and it easily attracted the most attention that year. It may not quite hold its own against some of the newer cars today (Aventador, MP4-12C, etc.), but this car will always be one of the most beautiful ever made, period. A timeless design. Congrats on your success, Jay. I hope to have a collection even 1/10th as nice as yours someday.

Patrick Pelletier no thats the previous generation. its called a 500e. I don't think it had a porsche eng. but they did help design it thats why they are worth so much

John Braugh well i know there's a special Mercedes Benz around that time that had a Porshe engine. I know it sounds weird but it happened. The wheels looked just like the ones on there and the body style seemed to be the same as i remember.
