If it works properly it should be something to behold.

I am pretty excited. A little bird told me that we should probably start seeing it in some hardware this year!

So we would need new hardware? New AVR's? Speakers?

Its very hard to say for sure. But in my mind, I'm thinking it's software-based. Potentially support with software alone on a computer/workstation. However, outside of that, I would imagine that the manufacturers would either need to apply a patch to support it or we may need new hardware. Still Kind of up in the air at this point.

Bring it as a software to all now divices AVR soundbars make not new once there is enough of it in world only software to my avr nothing else.

IAMF seems to be primarily a software-based audio technology. I would imagine computer/desktop support will be in the future. However, hardware support will most likely need to be implemented by the manufacturers.

immersive audio = scam. There's nothing new except for marketing/buzz/hype. We already know how reverb reflections create space in both stereo and binaural listening environments, and you can't improve on that without investing in some huge convoluted 9.1.4+ speaker setup with properly treated room acoustics. Nobody is going to bother with that and immersive audio mixes don't collapse down to stereo well either. Great for movie theaters, and maybe theme park rides; useless for music.

I appreciate your skepticism and understand where you're coming from. It's true that immersive audio technologies like 3D sound and spatial audio are often surrounded by a lot of buzz, but there's more to them than just marketing hype. Firstly, you're right about traditional stereo and binaural setups - they've done a great job in creating spatial experiences with sound. However, immersive audio technologies like Dolby Atmos, DTSx, Aura 3d bring a whole new dimension to music listening. They aren't just about adding more speakers or creating complex setups; they're about enhancing the way we experience sound. Object-based immersive audio allows sound elements to be treated as separate entities with distinct spatial coordinates. This means sounds can be precisely positioned and moved in a three-dimensional space. This creates a dynamic and more realistic audio environment. Imagine being able to hear and feel the exact location of an instrument in a live concert recording, or experience the sound qualities of the theater it was recorded in or the subtle difference in a studio session - that’s the kind of depth and realism immersive audio aims to achieve. Modern artists and sound engineers are increasingly using these technologies to push creativity. Immersive audio formats provide a whole new way for them to explore artistically and sonically then what they could in the past. They are now able to create a more complex, dynamic, and emotionally engaging experience. It’s not just about the technical side of things but also about enhancing artistic expression and storytelling through sound. As for playback, it's true that optimal experiences do come from more elaborate setups, immersive audio formats are designed to be adaptable. They can be enjoyed on various systems, including high-end home theaters, headphones, or even mobile devices this helps ensure that the music/movie is closer to what was intended. The future of music is likely to see more of these immersive experiences, and while it does require some adaptation in terms of equipment and learning, the potential for creativity and listener engagement is immense. It's an exciting time for both artists and listeners, and I believe immersive audio is a big part of that future. Hope this helps a bit. If you happen to find yourself wanting to investigate a bit more about the technology maybe someone near you has an Apple Music account and a 5.2.2 setup. That would be a great starting point to truly feel like you're experiencing it properly. Obviously, if you can hear a larger setup it would be even better ;).

@@PaulEubanks It's all good man. Yup long winded. If you don't like spatial immersive I get it. There is def an exciting two channel world as well that is incredibly enjoyable and sounds amazing as well. I'm a fan of both and wanted to share that an open source and free version of multichannel spatial is in the works. As long as we are all enjoying music/movies that is what the hobby is all about.

@@scaudioav I like Spatial Audio. I dislike applying it to solve a problem that doesn’t exist. It’s great for movies, theme parks, and video games. It’s useless for music production, and in most cases the spatial mixes are much worse. Maaaaybe I can see a use in ultra large live concert settings, but even then sparingly since the audience is distributed and listening conditions are sub-optimal.
