@2.old4this
@2.old4this 5 дней назад
After being medically discharged from the British Armed Forces following a knee injury sustained in Afghanistan. I’ve endured five failed surgeries and a knee replacement that has also failed. I crumbled into depression and PTSD. Lying in bed contemplating ending my life, I switched on the TV and watched four crazy men cycling up an alpine hill on various naff bikes. Dan, Si, Matt and Tom. I cried laughing and laughed so much, I couldn’t stop crying. In that moment I learnt to cry again. Si won, by the way. I fell in love with cycling and GCN. A new purpose became something of an obsession but healing came with it.. All because of GCN and a remarkable long-suffering wife of 34 years. Having piled on the weight through the struggles, I’ve now dropped 28kg and my goal is to climb ‘The Alpe’ in real life. The knee is still knackered and painful but cycling has helped me cope with the physical and mental struggle. GCN, you make me laugh and I hope you’re still enjoying those zip ties I sent to Si! My hope for GCN: Just keep pedalling. More adventure movies? More training tips for older and physically challenged riders? Just keep pedalling GCN and thank you for all you’ve done and will do.

I understand you can’t do live streaming of racing, but something GCN+ did that I haven’t been able to find anywhere else is the ~30min highlight videos. Perfect to watch the morning after (in Australia), when the 5min highlights don’t quite capture the drama but watching the whole stage is impractical.

I really liked the old, funnier videos you all used to do when Matt Stephens and Emma Pooley were still part of the team. I.E. devious ways to beat your mates, top ten things not to wear when cycling, foods not to eat on a bike, etc. Nice little pick-me-ups in the middle of the day. Some of the older videos for maintenance were also really good - I.E. Si's videos showing how to adjust derailleurs, adjust brakes, change a tube, etc. Those were all super helpful years ago when I was first getting into cycling. Happy to hear that GCN is independent again!

Guys - one can simply not overstate the true fact that you have changed the entire sport of cycling - making it friendlier, more welcoming and better for the world-wide cycling tribe. 10 years ago, in the Oakland, CA airport while wearing my original blue GCN t-shirt I was stopped by not one, but two separate security workers, who couldn't stop talking about how much they loved GCN/those guys. Oakland is quite a ways away from Bath! You are legends, so please just keep being yourselves. I have only one life-bucket list item, and that is to buy Dan and/or Simon a pint in person to thank you for leaving a remarkably positive mark on our collective cycling life. Really enjoyed the Slow Cycling series, and "light touring" (for lack of a better word) content in general. Into the more intense adventure/bikepacking as well, but quiet exploration of stuff around the corner is I think a niche of its own! May I suggest a series on how age affects the body and how an older cyclist can improve / maintain performance or postpone decline. For example a Dr’s view on how the body ages, what are the changes taking place and how they affect cycling. What is a safe way to exercise as you get older, how often and how hard? Are there any off-bike things older cyclists can do so they can stay on the bike longer into old age. Also women’s cycling deserve supporting and in my view you shouldn’t shy away from the difficult female topics which live in the closet such as menopause, menstruation, chauvinism, etc. I also loved your series on how cycling changed peoples lives such as Orla Walsh. In short it’s hard to narrow it down as I have really missed the films on GCN+ and now I’m looking forward to it coming back soon, but this is tinged with sadness and sympathy for those who have lost jobs as a consequence of the change.

We can't keep wearing the same shorts and shammies and how do you pack enough for say a month's long adventure? Are there quick drying ones that can be washed and ready the next morning? I was literally half way through the doco on Sonny Colbrelli when the GCN+ feed went dead...as a doctor, a cyclist and someone with a heart condition it was a very moving tale of survival and close to me personally. So please can I finish watching it now? There were so many GCN+ films that I never got to watch....I thought they would be around for ever, so very excited that they are coming back (Fun fact: There is a cardiac electrical disorder that can lead to cardiac arrhythmia and sudden death first described by a Spanish Dr, Dr Brugada in 1992 and called Brugada Syndrome. Turns out there are three Brugada brothers, all cardiologists, and all expert in these disorders that can cause sudden cardiac death. By chance one of these the youngest Dr Brugada's is the head of cardiology at Girona and was responsible for looking after Sonny after his cardiac arrest...talk about lucky.)

One suggestion I would offer is a series of shows on the history of the bicycle and the bicycle's greater influence on cultures worldwide. From what I've read, bicycles were initially invented to offer poor people an inexpensive alternative to horses for transportation. Bicycles played a role in the Women's Suffrage Movement in the U.S. Bicycles have been used as weapons of war and are still regularly used by law enforcement officers all over the world. Bicycles have been used to haul cargo, by lawn mowing crews to move around cities, and to deliver food, plane tickets and the mail. In addition to Wilcox's expedition, there are some other interesting bicycle expeditions that have taken place. Herlihy's book The Lost Cyclist is a fascinating look at the disappearance of an American man who attempted to (mostly) ride his bicycle around the world in the 1890's. It includes pictures he took along the way in various locations around the world. A podcast about that book might be interesting to some. Bicycles led to the development of motorcycles. The Wright Brothers (first verified powered flight) were bicycle shop owners.

Am extremely happy to hear GCN being independent. You hooked me with live road race streaming and I was a paid subscriber. Sounds like the live racing isn’t coming back (yet) but content after live racing dropped off still has kept me as a loyal viewer. This announcement is a bit confusing and unclear. - Please do a detailed show on what plans are or could be. - Have a pop-up and/or major announcement headline on the website with details that are as specific as possible. - All videos GCN does like this one should have, above the area where sponsor’s and other information is listed, a hotlink and/or an email address to send general suggestions and/or in reference to the specific video. The hotlink could also contain a survey GCN could develop to get specific questions you would want answered. - Don’t know exactly where or how, maybe as part of a video you do specifically addressing this change to going independent, there should be some form of survey you can post to allow us to help you get additional clarity on questions you have of us. - Funny as much as I use my iPhone to watch GCN content the minute you said the website is going away I went to look at it, and thought to myself, damn the headings and its layout is really nicely done. Have a bad feeling the people supporting that content and layout are going away too??? Please provide more clarity on that topic. There should be some form of website. All that said, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL YOU HAVE DONE, ARE DOING, AND HOPE TO DO! ❤

Content that I'm interested in continuing to see: More women presenters and content along the lines of what Manon has been doing (especially breaking taboos!), Commuter challenges, Epic long rides/personal bests/ backpacking adventures, science physiology/training deep dives (a la Si & Manon zone 2 Ollie/Conor on nutrition, Dan on whole health makeover) how to videos, personal stories of how people got into cycling, triumphs and frustration with bicycle advocacy. I've said it last week and I'll say it again: I'm wearing my helmet on my daily commute, and it's not on an electric bike. It is, however, partially due to electric bikes. More people with more differing speeds on the same bike lane leads to more dangerous situation. Especially the people who seem to be thinking "I've paid top money for this bike now I'm going to ride top speed on a busy bike lane." It's made me decide I'll never ride my race bike over 30 while in a town.

I’d really like to see more of these videos about accessible adventure cycling. I also really liked the mountain series of videos where you told us the history of the passes and Cols over the years and then cycled them. It would also be really nice to see you go out with average cyclists on adventures just to show how accessible this sport really is. Maybe budget bike adventures is worth looking at? Really glad to have GCN getting back to how it should be and good luck for the future.

I loved the GCN+ videos! The culture/ homelands, slow cycling, makers, travel blogs, long form versions of your epic tours, extreme challenges, icons of the sport. They were all fabulous. Videos made by another maker that could be a fantastic addition are the Cafe Rides Matt Stephens does for Sigma. The cafe ride is such an iconic part of the cycling scene, it just works. The breadth of subject matter you covered on those videos was astounding and the production values were exemplary. I do enjoy finding out about new tech, but my default ‘tight arse’ would love to see a little more content about keeping older but still very functional older bikes as relevant as possible too. I’m a very proud rider of a ‘Trigger’s Broom’ bike from the turn of the millennium. The only standard bits from the original bike are the frame, forks, headset (which is due an update!) and the seat post. I still love that bike, or should I say ‘frame’. I keep looking for a new bike, but very little suits my budget/ expectations apart from what I see on the second hand market. But in a nutshell, keep putting out the good and varied content, but don’t forget about the older viewers too. I’m getting on for 60 now, so a Lloydie style fitness journey featuring someone further along life’s path would be fab too. It would be very interesting to delve into what can be done to slow down the fitness decline.

Congratulations and I’m in! Shame you can’t re-provide the live racing stuff of GCN+ as that was superb too, but it’s so good to hear you’re free of your shackles! Content-wise I enjoy seeing how others train, interviews with leading coaches, riders, nutritionists etc, factory tours, time with pro teams, road and gravel events, anything really! Films don’t have to be biggest/ longest etc, why not do things that people can also achieve themselves like weekends away and so on? What’s not enjoyable for me are the ‘filler’ type shite that really feels like it’s been done purely to hit a target, the example that comes to mind would be the cup of coffee/decaff and do a climb vid a while back. Not a reflection on the presenters but it was a low point I feel. So exciting to hear your news and I’m definitely in when the subscriptions come out, you folks are always refreshing to watch and not afraid to take the piss, which is very important and fairly rare these days! 👍🏼

I was so anxious when I saw the title of the video and the blank red screen - you have no idea! My husband and I try to watch pretty much everything GCN makes (we even stay to the end of the weekly show EVERY SINGLE WEEK, no kidding!); GCN is very much a part of our lives and we would be devastated to see anything happen to it. I am very excited to be able to watch the wonderful documentaries again and will be thrilled to pay for whatever membership is required on RU-vid. (I hope all the ones that were ever available on GCN+ will be available, including the ones that seemed to "time out" of the GCN app.) I love the occasional group Zwift ride with a GCN presenter. I don't know how you could monetize that exactly, but if you can -- take my money! Autographed merchandize in the GCN Shop -- again, take my money! Christmases, birthdays, Father's Days, and anniversaries would be covered for years.
@rachelgorham1730

More thoughts: Some of our favorite GCN content is just the presenters screwing around and having fun together. You did a secondhand bike challenge years ago -- the one where Tom Last did the track-stand on the tricycle -- that we pull up at least a few times a year and rewatch, always ending up with tears of laughter streaming down our faces. The more you can do of that kind of thing, the better, as far as we're concerned. (How long WAS Si's trackstand? You all never said!) We love the challenges, love all the presenters' personalities, and love seeing the scenery on your long rides, even if your "gravel riding" is on grass (says the rural Californian). ;-)

Hi Dan & Si! I'm happy with much of the content that you've made over the years. The channel was instrumental during my first few years on a road bike, and it has clearly made an impact in my life for the better. That's why I keep coming back. In regards to content I would want to see as a paying subscriber, I would love to see some more tech content that goes into detail on certain subjects (narrow&nerdy). Think of it like expanding your already impressive library, but focused on narrow topics, like adjusting bearing preload or the maintenance and assembly of the gear mechanism in Campagnolo 10 and 11-speed levers. Aside from that, the tech video dedicated (or mostly dedicated) to advice and q&a is one of my favourites. Focus on older components and drivetrains would be appreciated every now and then. Someone like Cannings with an encyclopedic mind and intricate knowledge about the history of components and bikes would be a godsend. Personally, I'm pretty invested in Campagnolo 10 and 11-speed drivetrains, aside from the one bike with Shimano Dura Ace 7800. Parts availability is becoming a challenge and as the parts age they develop a need for some intricate maintenance. However, giving the components their deserved maintenance and keeping our aging bikes on the road might not be a "cool" topic.

Glad you have your independence back, though very sorry to hear about the human cost. Things I’d like to see in future. These are not in any particular order, just as they come mind. 1. Documentaries. It doesn’t have to be epic Andean challenges. I wasn’t a fan of the reality TV style stuff, like the build a bike challenge. But seeing the GCN presenters (and friends) pootling around in interesting places or pootling themselves to new challenges was awesome. I loved the documentaries. 2. Don’t make everything about high performance aero nonsense. I know you do videos comparing cheaper bikes to more expensive bikes, and I do think you are honest about the findings, but the trend is definitely towards promoting high end stuff. Go out and do an epic adventure on an alloy 105 rim brake bike or something. That said, I understand that sponsors pay the bills, but “benefits really kick in over 40kmh” applies to a fraction of your audience. 3. In the shop, make sure there are some cheap, good looking options. Not everyone wants to spend stupid money on haute couture cycling kit to support the channel, but spending a bit of money for something that still has good design is absolutely fine. Make sure the sizes are really clear and concrete. It’s online only so having models of “normal” e.g. weekend warrior riders would be really helpful. Real life sizing would be such a plus. 4. I feel Ollie has become overpowered in recent episodes. Can you not nerf him a bit? 5. Make sure Connor adequately prepares for his challenges. He’s a lovely guy, but there is a clear trend. 6. Interview some top riders (racers, endurance, MTB, etc) in a casual setting. It’s really interesting to see the people behind the helmets and visor-like sunglasses. You’re a well-known channel. I’m sure people would cooperate, especially if it becomes a fun thing. You know, interview plus fun experience/tasty meal. Look at Korean Englishman and his soccer team or Hollywood stars x Korean Barbecue videos, for example. Watching Jumbo-Vista eat an exotic meal together in the off-season could be really enjoyable. 7. GO TO DIFFERENT COUNTRIES. People outside of Europe cycle, too. It’d be awesome to see you guys ride local routes in countries outside of Europe. You sometimes go to events in different places, but there’s a whole world to explore. Come to Kobe, Japan and I’ll happily show you some great cycling in and around the area. You’re so UK and Euro-focused. For good reasons, of course, but you do have widespread appeal. 8. Is there any market for GCN Polo shirts? Being of a certain physique, I rarely wear T shirts, but I’m often in polo shirts. How about a line of smart, discreet polo shirts?
@theoriginalstoney
@theoriginalstoney 8 дней назад
On helmet usage in the Netherlands: speaking as a resident there, I think this will be a difficult transition as people will not see the perceived risk and it definitely would be a "barrier" - simply because the current threshold is so low. It's something else to bring (also for the kids), would mess your hair, etc... If it became law it would either not be respected or would have a major impact on bike usage. The reason bikes are used here is that it is so easy and (generally) safe. Hitting the race bike, or great single tracks in the woods is a different deal - 99% of people where helmets then. But simply riding a bike to a work meeting (or visiting the King, if you're Mark Rutte) and turning up with helmet hair would be a very practical reason not to take the bike. I write this having grown up in the UK, where I typically wore a helmet. Conditions are completely different here.

Whatever happened to personal responsibility? People here in NL recognise that the everyday cycling risk is minimal, as is the difference that helmets would make….so 99% of (non-sporting) rides are made without them. People are not generally stupid and we all take hundreds of small calculated risks every day…driving, crossing a road, going outside, eating and drinking, incurring stress at work etc etc. Cycling without a helmet is just another one such risk. Why should people be forced to wear one, when theres no impact on other people from that choice. (Don’t mention healthcare cost from the very occasional incident…before you compare it to the societal cost of 20 million new helmets). Imo, it is just nanny-state nonsense promoted by people who want to control other people’s lives.

Happy to see your newfound independence. Love the show, films, and interviews. I’d love to have GCN Training get more attention. Long winters means lots of time on the trainer but I don’t want to pay for an online service I’m only going to use for 5 months (plus the hardware costs). Those videos of old showing the POV climbing up iconic mountains was really motivating in February!

Dear GCN, You have said it - I too have been mourning the sudden loss of GCN Plus, and have not subscribed to any other platform. I have found that this way I have more time to ride my bike :D And can make do with the short recaps uploaded by Eurosport and Lanterne Rouge. I do also miss the original content and am glad to hear that it will be making its way over here to RU-vid. I am curious to see the pricing model you are going to go for with those originals. As for what I'd like to see more of - more of the same, really - honest and well researched videos. I suspect it's not something that can be done (yet, still?), but it would be nice if Matt popped back for a video or two - the chemistry the three of you had was truly something special. A more ambitious idea would be a GCN road show around Europe, or the whole World! :D Edit: Almost forgot! Bring back the Wattage Bazooka please :) Edit2: My name is not Isaac, and yet I watched till the very end ;)

Here is an idea why don’t you have a used parts shop on the website so people can get their hands on some of that classic 11 speed Gear and other bits and bobs in one place. Just an idea for the New GCN.

You're saying as soon as Cilian fixed the uploader, the website will be taken down... ^^ Seeing how rushed WB/D changed things up in the MTB World Cup, feels like just for the sake of change, i see a brighter future for GCN this way. Because it's probably reasonable to assume that this way to do business was not limited to the MTB WC. I feel like opening up the topics to all those things around cycling would be interesting: - what makes a good cycle path and what goes into planning and building one? - Interview people that are experts in anything cycling related (city planners, engineers, physios, coaches, cyclists etc.) - testing daily driver bikes (not talking about road bikes, more about city bikes etc.) - how to use cycling as cross training (including things like pump tracks etc.) - therapy sessions with Cilian once the new uploader works - trying other cycling disciplines you never done before - cycle ball tournament between the different channels. regarding the picture for the caption competition: to me it looks like it's on the Gotthardpass (Passo San Gottardo), even though they only done the north side and the iconic "Tremola" is on the south side of the pass (which would be a "must" if you ever make it here for any videos).

Heraclitus: 'There is nothing permanent except change.' I'm glad to hear that GCN will continue despite the internal restructuring. I've been a cyclist in the USA for over 35 years and am impressed as to how GCN keeps coming-up with new and interesting content. I started reading Bicycling Magazine in the 1980s I was a teenager, but no longer care for the direction that Bicycling Magazine has gone as they seem to be bent on pushing political agendas more than simply focusing on cycling content. GCN has done a great job of just sticking to cycling... I appreciate that.

Helmets in the Netherlands :) nobody likes them but with the rising popularity of the E bikes everything is a lot faster now days. Infra structure is top notch but the speeds on the bike lanes are not longer mostly under 18km they are above it

Keep up the good work guys! Being flexible and reacting to the demands is essential these days. I had been down for a while and watching your videos got me back on track. I love watching your challenges, adventures - even if the challenge itself cannot be met. Watching real people instead of superheroes helps a lot to go and try yourself. Thanks GCN

It might be cool to have a series that just follows an amateur racer racing amateur races. The Weekday crit, local Time Trials, etc. and using that as a springboard for observations and conversations.

GCN inspired me to start cycling. :) A GCN Shop on mainland Europe would be a big plus do. :P saves your fans a lot of import fees wen buying some great GCN gear. ( Making vids that inspire non cyclist to give it a go and go out there should be a focus point :)

Reviews! I know there is the inside joke that GCN only ever make adverts, but if you put resources into making review videos - including criticism of the reviewed product you have the might to change the industry for the better!

This is why they seed products to reviewers, DC rainmaker is a prevalent reviewer in this space. Because although there may be some negatives feedback, its a relationship worth having.

Safety glasses are important. Could’ve saved you from the brunt of the pedal. I was working on a humvee in Iraq when the socket wrench slipped off the bolt and hit me square in the eye. I happen to be wearing safety glasses and took a huge gouge out of the lens. Saved my eye but still ended up with a bruise. Wrench safe

Would love to see more diversity. GCN does a great job of representing white male, eurocentric, road cycling. While there has been a recent increase in content related to female cycling (kudos to Manon!), the predominant focus of content is that of the white male. Not a complaint, an observation, and a response to the request for comment of what viewers would like to see GCN do in the future. Given GCN aims to be a 'global' cycling network it would be great to see more content covering people of colour and the various different types of cycling movements around the world. Perhaps this could be in collaboration with established groups or content creators (like the Black Cyclists Network, or Miss Omar @AuntieKay28 who promotes cycling amongst Muslim women)? It would be great to see videos on the keirin scene in Japan, fixed gear cyclocross, trail dogs (dogs who love to run trails while their owners ride), crit racing, the eccentric hill climb scene in the UK (to name a few). One of the GCN aims is to encourage/inspire more people to get on bikes, remember representation matters. If you can see it, you can be it! All that said, glad to see that GCN has survived the turbulent last few years of growth, buy-outs, mergers. Best of luck for continued success throughout this new phase 🙂

GCN live streams for big cycling events would be awesome! Maybe a reaction programme might be something to scale up GCN Racing a bit (e.g. reacting to crazy good performances, hot takes by cyclists etc.)

I'm really glad to hear that the GCN+ films will be made available again. One of my big regrets with the development of GCN+ was that we never properly facilitated comments or any kind of feedback on the films. It was always on the to-do list but just never made it to the top. So I'm glad now that all the films will be on a platform where GCN fans can finally publicly give the films the appreciation they deserve.

One of my favourite series was watching the Irish presenter, name i cannot remeber, training for Flanders and Letape tours. Maybe you could do a male and female Fat to CAT series. Your regular average family joes and get them into a training plan to enter a crit race. Another could be training series via Zwift with a GCN coach over the winter leading up to a specific UK race. Regional GCN meet ups.
