I hope that Benji's hot takes will be the break out star of 2023. Every time he does a truly degenerate hot take everyone goes: "yeah i can see it happening".
@legrandepatrontheplaneteat6241
I have to congratulate you both on another excellent year. I feel like cycling took another step this year with the amount of high level talent that get's brought up and get's to shine and the both of you were there right along with them. Stepping up your game, to new incredible heights. I always knew of course and never thought for example that Pog looked unbeatable.

Thanks for the kind words!

Regarding sportswashing, thanks for mentioning betting companies. It's been an absolute plague in the NL when we were forced to open up the market and the addiction aspects of it seem all but forgotten. It's very prevalent in cycling: Lotto, bingo-al, FDJ, etc.
@LanterneRougeCyclingPodcast
Thank you for correctly pronouncing bin go al
@ellipticalsoul

Betting companies are all over football in the UK too, so many teams shirt sponsors and even the leagues below the premier have a title sponsor that is a bookmaker. You get a bizarre situation on TV ad breaks where half the adverts are for betting and half are public service announcements about gambling addiction "when the fun stops" etc.
@robincameron
@robincameron Год назад
Same in Australia, they're all over the big sports with huge major title sponsorship and big ad buys. They're a blight on society.
@kevinstanhope9724

It’s completely circumvented the law here in America. Sports betting is called “a game of skill” to avoid restrictions against gambling in most states

@@ellipticalsoul and yet even on the “when the fun stops…” warning, the word FUN is highlighted compared to rest of the text, once again associating fun with betting, even subconsciously

Great podcast, thanks guys. I only discovered you (and pro cycling) this year and it's become my favourite sport, in part because of your excellent analysis mixed with everyday humour. Much more human than GCN. I'm still learning the cycling jargon, but you've helped with that. Your tips have been great for my Velogames team as well. Love that you both still love doing this. Looking forward to many more pods in 2023!

Van Aert was in a lot of break away action too, anyone disagrees?
@MartijnterHaar
@MartijnterHaar Год назад
Another advantage of cycling is that the rivalries are less intense. Vingegaard / Jumbo fans do in general respect Pogacar / UAE, Van Aert fans Van der Poel, etc. If you sponsor Manchester United, half the city of Manchester and large parts of England will dislike you. And although some fans who have been drinking beer in the sun for hours waiting for the race to arrive can get rowdy, there are no violent hooligans that are also actual criminal gangs associated with cycling.

Much respect guys. You've come a long way. Really appreciate the support for women's cycling though it has its awkward moments. My favorite moment on the podcast this year was LR trying to point out after stage 7 of TDF-Femme that Kasia Niewiadoma having her jersey unzipped was not aerodynamic.

At same time, don’t underestimate yourselves....LR, you’ll be an outstanding agent the day that it becomes a priority for you.....Benji, the very way you discuss people leadership challenges already demonstrates what a great people leader you can become, if and when you want to. Thanks for a wonderful 2022...Ive enjoyed your virtual company so so much👍

Massive props n thanks to both you legends. Alongside The Trainer Road mob this channel has easily been my highest watch time of all of YT this past year. Your dedication, consistency and quality continues to trend in the right direction. And for what it's worth - of all that watch/listen time I mentioned - this particular upload (and format) has my favourite so far. As has all the Q&A type uploads. (unsure if that's reflective in the engagement n stats on your end. But yeah, re the "what people want to see on your ig" issue/opportunity you mentioned. It's more simply a "do what you do and just put mix of whatever tf you like up and people will or will not engage, rather than 'another channel to go vertical in'" situation..

I would say for the breakaway: Remco Evenpoel. No shit LBL and Worlds, not because of those labels but because of the break, the length, and the way he did it. Unless of course, you create a solo breakaway category also.

Magnus Cort is the world's best breakaway rider! He was flying the first half of TDF22 before he got Covid and had to withdraw. He was a shoe-in for the Combativety award in Paris if he had just finished. Cort can finish in any terrain, he is really fast in a sprint, can climb fairly good and can keep a killer tempo on the flat, he is the complete breakaway rider! In the Vuelta 21 and TDF22 he showed the cycling world what he can do, too bad his season got effed up because of a spring-crash and Covid! Despite that, he is the best by a mile.

For the sponsorship discussion, one big issue I have is that a lot of it are done by companies I just don't care about. I don't care about some Norwegian software company, Belgian glue company, etc. At least the equipment sponsors make some sense, but it's not like I could afford a bike similar to what the pros use, let alone ride one on with some form of comfort. I've always been extremely skeptical about roi from advertising and to me I still believe most companies invest in cycling because they happen to be fans of the sport.

"Greenwashing" is the biggest scam. EVs on a full cycle basis generate a fair amount of carbon and utilize extremely toxic metals, often mined unethically. If popularized, EVs should be small and used for commuter travel reducing costs and waste. The should not be subsidized status symbols for the wealthy. Biofuels have an energy return of 20% (i.e. 1 unit of energy is used to generate 1.2). Meanwhile, if you look at the science, NONE of this will appreciably impact carbon levels. The West can go zero carbon tomorrow at a ludicrous expense but China, India, and the less developed will increase net carbon in the atmosphere. So why are we doing any of this other than to enrich corporations and elites?

INEOS tried to sponsor an exhibit at the London Natural History Museum & were blocked by protest. A lot cheaper than a whole year of being title sponsor to a cycle team & still prestigious. Most likely the most prestigious museum in the U.K. & the exhibit was on climate change so offered the opportunity of full on green-washing. Think your argument comparing to football (soccer) works a lot better for Middle Eastern countries than other varieties of bike-washing. Edited for spelling/grammar.

Aswell as the greater variety of types of dodgy sponsorships in cycling than football(soccer) is that football can easily survive without the dodgy money. Cycling is rapidly reaching the point where most of the money in the sport is dodgy, be it from a country at war in Yemen (UAE, Bahrain), apartheid (Israel), Gambling (various lottos), eco-terrorism (INEOS, Totale-energies) and Will brands, for example Merida, want to associated with what Bahrain (as part of Saudi led coalition with UAE) is doing in Yemen? I know we are currently ignoring Yemen & Palestine but things like that can change. Maybe Pog could ride for a CIA team and Geraint Thomas could ride for the NSA team…
