This is what I believe to be the future of LUTs. If you've seen my latest videos, you know that the way we color correct and grade is changing. And what Cullen Kelly is doing to help further that process and make it easily accessible to everyone is what's going to help kickstart the change. Truly an exciting time for color!

What was failed to mention in this video (or I may have missed it) is that THESE LUTs (element) EXPECT DAVINCI WIDE GAMUT. You can go to your settings and make sure the color managed setting is on and be able to use these luts in that workflow. They aren’t really to be used in this type of a workflow UNLESS you manually map it into HDR DAVINCI WIDE GAMUT INTERMEDIATE. You do this by: 1.) Going to settings and changing your color science to Davinci YRGB COLOR MANAGED 2.) Tick OFF the automatic color management 3.) Change color process to HDR DAVINCI WIDE GAMUT INTERMEDIATE and change your output color space to whatever screen you are delivering for (I use rec 709 gamma 2.4) 4.) Make sure your 3D lookup table interpolation is Tetrahedral (this is missed by most) and press save.

What a great approach to color grading. Normally, I try to avoid LUTs for final grading, but with these LUTs you seem to have more control and choices. Great find, thank you.
@Rogeras32
@Rogeras32 2 года назад
mate, luts are constantly used by pros. First - it's usually applied universally, so it helps to maintain a very consistent palette across the whole project. Second - it saves time. So instead of jerking the poor hue v hue curve, you get your universal look, tweak it if needed on a timeline level, and move on so you have more time to match your shots or apply local corrections and other bells and whistles to perfect your shot, like masks, relighting, facial retouching and so on. You have your "controls and choices", they're just applied usually prior to the lut (if you're fine with the curve without any tweaking, like the black point or certain colors) and with built in instruments that you have at your disposal. Problem is - not every lut pack is good and trustworthy. Most of them don't even provide proper information of the input color space expected. Some of them have problematic oversaturation, some of them crush your picture and so on. Hell, even the basic built-in 2383 is widely used in cinema and commercials.

The Elements LUTs are cool, for sure. But hey Casey, since we are talking about CST you should be managing the before / after of the node either via ACES or DWG, and not feeding them directly to the V-Log . Just a hint ;)
@CaseyFaris
@CaseyFaris 2 года назад
Mmmm not necessarily true. Either is ok. I’d say you’d technically have more flexibility of transforming to DWG, but the difference wouldn’t be noticeable in most cases I’d bet.

@@CaseyFaris It looks ok for sure, but I do think when you're making a tutorial you should teach the correct way of handling these LUTS. You can't assume everyone is working in the same camera log/color space as you are.. So the transforming to DWG is actually necessary to explain, if you want everyone to have the same expected results with these LUTS.

Huge variety of options, as well as real life use among professional colorists, that color grade commercials, tv shows and music videos. Especially the neutral curve lower contrast lut. Game changer. Fascinating. I am wondering what "color space outputs" those LUTs are designed for. Arri Log C, Cineon, Rec709? Or are those LUTs "open" so that they work with any footage. I also thought a LUT must know what the input color space is. Again. S-Log, Log-C, Cineon, Red. My guess is that those LUTs are designed that they work with any input color space?! I am just guessing. I will head over to Cullen Kellys channel, and I am super excited to know more about his LUTs. I highley recommend his channel. Can't wait to get more details about those LUTs.
@smunaut
@smunaut 2 года назад
I was wondering the same thing. I mean, they can't be "generic", they have to be targeted at a given working color space (gamut & gamma curve) to give consistent results. So which one is it ?
@unconsenting81
@unconsenting81 2 года назад
The free 2383 has two versions of the LUT. One for ACES and one for Davinci Wide Gamut so convert your video from its color space to DWG or ACES with a CST, apply the lut, and then use another CST to take you from DWG or ACES to your viewing color space, like rec 709 or rec 2020

@@unconsenting81 Thanks. Makes sense sinve the website says "Purpose-built to work within Resolve Color Management" and this is pretty much what it does under the hood. (use 2 CSTs before/after the user node tree)
@unconsenting81
@unconsenting81 2 года назад
These LUTs are meant to work in a color managed workflow, so basically you convert all your footage to Aces or Davinci Wide Gamut with a Color Space Transform node, do your color correction in that wide gamut, then convert from that wide gamut color space to your viewing color space (like rec709 or DCI-P3) with another CST. It makes it a lot easier to match cameras and allow your tools to work the same no matter what the footage

@@unconsenting81 These LUTS just doesn't work with CST to DWG in node tree. You have to make a color managed project via Davinci color mgmt.

Maybe I miss the purpose of this. First, it helps telling people how to use this. Secondly, I can make a grade and make a LUT myself. The benefits, I know what I did and can always go back and tweak settings. Applying a LUT is like a black box. It looks sometimes good, but you don’t know why.

These are cool, but they clip in weird places. For example, I'm using 10-bit Panasonic GH5 footage on a DWG timeline. The 2383 DWG to DWG converter clips around 700 IRE. It's introducing a hard limit clip there. Weird! That's when I use it before OR after the CST.

This is interesting! But are you shure you are talking about IRE? Maximum IRE should be 100, it represents maximum brightness of the video signal. Do you have V-LogL to DWG transform at the beginning of your pipeline (at the project or clip/group level)?

@smunaut
@smunaut 2 года назад
They're kind of alternative way of working. There was a workshop by Blackmagic last december going over that. In a gist, you can imagine the 'color managed' settings as having a CST before your color node tree that converts whatever your footage is in into Davinci Wide Gamut Intermediate color space. Then all your nodes operate in that space. And then after your node tree there is another "hidden" color space transform that goes from Davinci Wide Gamut Intermediate into whatever output color space your selected in the settings. (At least that's my understanding) Personally I go with explicit CST nodes rather than the "hidden ones" from "color managed" because I find it more explicit and also because when you work with Fusion (even just fusion titles), some things work weirdly in color managed mode.
@rbengraff

By video game montage I mean, like video game clip compilation, and it's like synced to a song and there's memes to make the video funnier. I feel like that style would cover a lot of interesting editing concepts. Here is a link to an example. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eLfJ5eowS3Y.html. Thanks.

The only thing I see against this approach is the LUTs are not intelligent. There's no way to identify what the source footage was shot in. So if you have mixed cameras there's no way to match them all. The concept behind CST is to get all footage looking the same at the starting point so you can match different cameras together.
@CaseyFaris
@CaseyFaris 2 года назад
Id just just add a cst converting to DaVinci wide Gamut before the LUTs. You can customize each one to whatever cam profile. This is the basic case with ANY look or LUT of any kind.

Show us how to make a Lut then save it, recall it for use, then how to apply one lut to multiple clips so it can be used faster. I mean, I don't want to complain but most of your color videos fly right over my head. BTW, what does LUT stand for anyway? OK, I have more to say but I'm just going to end this comment here. 😀
