In this video on Node Order in Color, I go through my system of node tree construction for every project I start. Now this isn't the end-all be-all way of doing things, but this is a great way to get started and might give you some ideas on how to make your own workflow for your color projects in Resolve!

Really appreciate your "preamble". Learning the foundational concepts helps way more than just memorizing how you or someone else prefers to do it. Good video.

Love and watch all your videos. When you say node order, I'm thinking about the sequence where a change in the sequence changes the output. For example with three nodes A--B--C might be different from B--A--C Is this ever the case?

Ah-ha! 💡 Nodes are just another form of adjustment layers like in my photo editors, only horizontal instead of vertical. And more visual. Now I get it. Thank you! And thanks for the cool node structure download. I'll try and use it when I open my first clip in Resolve that I also just downloaded. Now I need to film a clip...

I typically do exposure first too. But...if I am using a LUT (such as the DJI LUTS) those tend to also do that so I find myself then going back and re-doing the exposure. Do you have thoughts on the order in which LUTS should be applied? Thanks!
@CaseyFaris
@CaseyFaris Год назад
Put the LUT on as the first thing you do, but it goes on the last node. Then you work on the nodes before the LUT.

Would shadow boost and highlight reduction be considered to be within exposure node at the start? I have talked to pro colorists and they say they do shadow boost and highlight reduction at the very end.
@CaseyFaris
@CaseyFaris Год назад
Mmmm it's up to you. You could consider these a contrast adjustment, which some people like to do after other adjustments, but as long as it's before your color management you'll be ok if it looks good
@VeeTravels

@@CaseyFaris Ah thank you. Sorry when you say color management, do you mean making minor adjustments to the colors in the shadows, highlights, midtones, etc.?

Does timeline Nodes come before Clip nodes or after? , and in case of GROUP nodes? timeline nodes come beofre PRE Group or Post Group?
@CaseyFaris
@CaseyFaris 2 года назад
They are processed in the order they appear up above. Pre clip, clip, post clip, timeline.

@Casey Faris , Hello I have a request or perhaps just a questions There is an editing technique that is primarily used and flexed about on Premier Pro and I was wondering if you can simulate it on Davinci Resolve! I wont link youtube video I am referring to here out of respect you but I will give you description to the best of my ability... Step one- Split screen with Camera on one side of the screen showing the viewers you, and the other half of the screen is a blank colored screen Step two- Data and numbers pop up as the presenter speaks and the numbers increase in value from zero to intended figure (a chronological increase of value). Step three- show a diagram of some sort to represent the figures/ numbers presented for example: 65% will show a 3-d figure circulating the 65% and contrasting lines to decipher the value of 65% in a circulating figure- (if this gets confusing I can send you a video of what I am referring to) All in all I want to know if Davinci Resolve can be used as a great program to explain and teach viewers (not only in motion pictures). I really want to learn how to tailor Davinci to become the ultimate presentation tool : especially when it comes to numbers and mathematics Please Help wise one :)

I do have a general question... Can someone make video editing for other people (for example RU-vid) as full time job and make a living of it or is just like hobby?
@tmk6022

Yes. There are tons of different ways you could go about that, whether it's freelance work or full-time at a company. You could also work in the movie or advertising industry as a video editor.

I swear, the hardest part of shooting on a camera that outputs Linear Colourspace, is getting Colourists who "know what they're doing", to put the Linear to (Insert preferred colourspace) FIRST in the Node order. Having to listen to them whine that the camera "isn't all that good" when they've treated Linear footage like Log because they didn't listen to the instructions, is the most disappointing thing.
@jmoralesh
@jmoralesh 2 года назад
Just out of curiosity, what camera are you using for that linear output? And what's the advantage of shooting in linear directly?
@PiDsPagePrototypes
@PiDsPagePrototypes 2 года назад
@@jmoralesh There's a couple of cameras that 'Do Linear', but the thing to remember is ALL of the CDD and CMOS camera sensors ever made, are Linear sensors, and Log is the first step in the Colour Science (or video processing) done in the camera body. So, Raw isn't truly "raw" if it's Log,.. Linear Raw is raw. Advantages come in Cinema and CGI workflows, especially for CGI and for Games, where the underlying render engines produce better results if the camera feeding them uses the same input colourspace that the renderer uses, which is usually Linear. The cameras that do Linear output, are the Alexa, a couple of Sony's (the Super35 cine cams - F35, F65, and IIRC, the F55 and the Venice), and the bargain Linear camera that I have, the AJA Cion, which is also the only one of the bunch with a Global Shutter sensor, so a little less dynamic range, but action footage and freehand footage looks so good, and you don't have to waste processor cycles correcting the skew when panning. It does punish one hard if you screw up the lighting though. (In identical lighting, clipped to the same highlight, it looks the same from mid grey to clip as the BMD Ursa Mini G2, but the G2 has more stops below mid grey)
