Goats are going to be a lot of work, they are escape artists. I don't know where the hive is but we have bees all over our Rose of Sharon bushes and they don't bother anyone if you leave them alone. I did get stung once this year, a bee got caught in my shirt.
@AcresOfAdventure
@AcresOfAdventure 11 месяцев назад
I have heard that about goats and it is the biggest thing slowing us down on getting them!

@@AcresOfAdventureIf you want a dairy animal and can't do cows and are hesitant about goats, maybe look into Icelandic sheep? Sheep aren't the same escape artists as goats, and Icelandics can produce milk, wool and meat, so not only dual purpose but actually a tri-purpose animal. Sheep don't cut back hard brush as much as goats, but I've even heard you can RENT another person's goats to clear brush if that's all you want 😂 I don't own any, but I'm convinced I never want goats from everything I've learned about them, so the Icelandics are appealing to me, hoping to have my own homestead in the future so I've been on a research binge the last several weeks lol. The main drawback is they do have true wool and need to be sheared like twice a year but I think that's the tradeoff for them not trying to escape and/or kill themselves regularly lol.

We love our goats! Start small with just two does 😊 We have two Nigerian Dwarves. They give us about a half gallon of milk a day. Larger breeds (Nubian) will give twice that amount. But Nubians are bigger, louder, and eat more. My two NDs are super quiet, about the size of a collie, and don't require a lot of food 😊 Also, they are very hardy for northern Michigan winters!

You gotta do bees! I am a beekeeper and can attest to the fact that once you have them, you’ll want more! It’s a fascinating hobby, so much to learn. They are definitely not as busy as farm animals, but they are so addicting. I started in 2018 with two hives. I now have 8 hives. I harvested over #500 of honey this year. And you can actually sell more than honey. I have sold bees, honey, and wax. There are people who harvest bee pollen to sell. It is initially expensive, but you can get a little something monetarily in return. And all your friends, family, and coworkers will want your raw, local honey! Find a bee club in your area, and see if they offer a class to learn. You can learn during this coming winter, and be ready to keep bees in the spring. Good luck in whatever you choose! 😊🐝🐓

@ginnythibodeau3148

I will say that goats are wonderful too! Maybe you could do both, or do one and then add the other soon after. We know of a family near us that raises goats and uses the milk and they make soap, and another family that raises them and the goats have cleared a huge piece of property. I do know you can’t have just one goat. My brother and his wife had one years ago and she cried a lot. My brother said they need other goats to be with. I guess they are herd animals. Anyway, just a thought, bees and goats both would be great for y’all! I know you are homesteading which is wonderful in itself, but making these memories for y’all and your children is an absolute treasure! I promise you and your beautiful sweet wife, you will cherish these years!

Well, I was going to say goats but after reading other’s comments it looks like they aren’t necessarily a good recommendation. I was figuring there are easy ways simply to attract more bees to your property naturally without having to care for them. I wouldn’t do honey bees unless you really want the honey. Is someone nearby you already making honey? Local honey is good for allergies I’ve read. If I had the option, I’d get a pony. The kids would LOVE it and have so many fun memories! I guess you might train it to pull something for work or fun. I have heard that some breeds can be a bit mean so be sure to look into friendly breeds if you like the idea.

Ok...just an FYI...I have dairy goats. It is amazing to have milk for all the products I can make with it, BUT, milking twice a day, mucking stalls twice a day, keeping bucks separate, selling and/or processing the babies, and the poop! Lord the amount of poop! My girls have an acre and the boys have a separate acre. Though I would never give them up...they are very labor intensive. Love your family....good luck with yalls decision!😊

Awe yay...beeees!! I just started my first chicken flock by hatching out eggs back in March...they were 23 weeks old yesterday (we're still waiting for our first egg 🙃🙄). My next project that I've been scheming up is to start bee keeping next spring! If y'all decide to get bees, I would love to hear everything you do over the winter in prep for them in the spring...what resource you use to learn about them and keeping them, will you buy the hive racks or build them, etc...would love to see every aspect of your journey in starting a hive!! That said, it would also be cool to see the process of having goats. My husband and I had a goat several years ago, but just as a pet. My understanding is that they have to have just had a baby to lactate...so how would you keep the process going? Do the goats have to keep having babies to produce milk or can you get a goat that just had a baby and as long as you milk her would she continue to lactate!? That would be a cool process to follow and learn about too! Love the channel! Best wishes and prayers for a safe delivery of baby #4 in the near future!
