Before the shortage and price hike, I was getting Ozempic from Canada and for the first time got my a1c into the “prediabetes” range and almost into “nondiabetic” range. Unfortunately it’s cost prohibitive now. A couple things to point out that I don’t remember being mentioned in the video. For T2D and weight loss, mounjaro is a fantastic drug and typically better than Ozempic. For T1D, the difference is likely less pronounced as the primary mechanism of the GIP portion works at the beta cell / islet level of the pancreas to increase insulin release which we all know won’t do much for us T1Ds
Yes these meds are break through for diabetics however the health plans are absolutely not covering it, even if you are diabetic. Its terrible. It's a shame that these insurance companies have more power than the MD treating their patients.
For non-diabetics, beta cells in your pancreas produce both insulin and amylin (The ratio is about 100 to 1). Diabetics take insulin, but generally do not take amylin. Amylin inhibits food intake, delays gastric emptying, and decreases blood glucose levels, leading to the reduction of body weight. This is one of the reasons that I am most excited about Novo Nordisk's future CagriSema drug which includes a long-acting amylin component (in addition to the GLP-1).
