HyperChat #14 - Arcimoto has began production of its 3-wheel EV, the Fun Utility Vehicle (FUV). This marks a major milestone for the Eugene, Oregon based startup, that has been developing this technology/product for over a decade now. In this episode I talk with CEO/Founder Mark Frohnmayer about Arcimoto's vision for the future or personal mobility. Let me know what you think in the comments below!

After selling a few of these vehicles in touristy locations in the USA, these guys ought to start selling in China, India and southeast Asia where three wheeled vehicles and open vehicles already have some market acceptance. I think the vehicle is too expensive at $11,900 base price. They need to get the price below $10k to be competitive. MSRP on the Nissan Versa is only $12,460, and for that you get a fully enclosed vehicle that seats four, rides on four wheels, has full automotive safety equipment and even air conditioning and tilt steering wheel. The 2019 Versa is a remarkable bargain compared to a motorcycle or FUV.

The first responder vehicle has amazing potential. I work in the emergency room and for stroke patients or for someone who is having a heart attack, time is everything. Getting to the patients in an ambulance can be time-consuming during traffic. The Rapid Responder has the potential to improve the response time of reaching patients.

Just my prediction, Amazon is designing their new delivery vans around autonomy, to self drive from the warehouse with packages, then upon arrival at customer destination, Boston Dynamics Spot robots will exit the van with a package, and drop it at the front doors of said Amazon customers house. This may just be what is already in play! Great interview Gali, as always!

I have been critical of Archimoto via the 3 wheeler concept in the past - either two in front or two behind. Both have advantages and disadvantages in almost equal measure. But the fun aspect is always with the "two in front" idea. Lots of minor issues fall away with two wheels leading. I wish them every success. Bring them to Europe and they will just sell and sell, especially in southern Europe. Make them a little more weather resistant and the north is theirs too.

Very interesting concept and space. It would be helpful to understand about their ramp up schedule and challenges to get to 10,000 a year. Also, did I hear the CEO correct. "Working 4 days a week?" If you want to take a piece of the market you are going to need to work harder and more than the competition. I don't see a winning and inspiring leader who promotes a 4 day work week. At that rate they will run out of investor money long before they get to a sustainable production scale.

I really hope that they make it. On the other hand there was so big boom of this kind of vehicles at 50's and 60's here in Europe. They were not EVs but small 3 or 4 wheel vehicles tho. There was real need for them after the WW2 because lack of resources. Then people got more money. The question is, do I buy this kind of vehicle with 10k or do I buy used or even new car with the same money? Car protects you from weather and accidents better. Also you don't hear your neighbors laugh at you. There surely is market for these, but in everyday use by common people....I don't see that would happen anytime soon.

I've always lamented California's NEV laws are so poorly thought out. Neighborhood EVs are limited to 25 mph and require less safety equipment. Fine so far, but 25 is just too slow. I know many people that could use such a vehicle if it would just go 40. But at 40, you need safety equipment for a vehicle that can go 120. Because of this, NEVs went nowhere. The law could be rethought to provide a little more speed and safety equipment and make them actually useful.

I think the company has a great product (that's actually about to be production ready), but it seems to needs a sharper business plan. The potential market of "everyone" (lol) seems to breakdown to 80% delivery, ride share, first responder, and commuter, which is a huge and great vision for a large company, and then 20% vacation rental and golf carts, which seems to be the part of the market they are actually going after and competes against small companies like Polaris. It leaves my head scratching and wondering if they'll get to there larger vision any time soon (another 10 years?). You'd think pursuing a partnership with a food delivery or ride share service would be a quicker way to accelerate towards the larger vision rather than wasting time on the 20% small change. To me, worth a small bet, but they'll probably burn cash and drag things out, so investing today will likely get watered down with diluted shares as they need to go back to the well for more cash. Long term I hope they get there because I like their vision. Not sure the team that got them this far understands what it takes to go to the next level though.

Great vehicle, and a unique way of looking at designing a vehicle - but this will be their biggest challenge. While 85% of trips may be short, and with 1 or 2 people, it the 15% of trips which are longer and involve more people that draws us to 5-seater cars. If you have one of these, it is ALWAYS max 2 people. However... there are PLENTY of people out there who would see this trike as a perfect solution to their needs - and will get one. People like me, who absolutely need a vehicle every day, but for a short trip - where I am the only occupant.

No one will buy it because they are weird and ugly. That's how we are set up and why EVs failed before Tesla. Tesla was the one to make EVs look normal and cool. + it's a little like Chrome OS. It does what you need 99% of the time, but you are not going to be buying another laptop for that remaining 1%

What makes Tesla so great is the safety factor. That vehicle doesn’t look very safe.

What about safety? I wouldn't want to be in a car crash in this vehicle!

So at least $20k for a two seat three wheeler with limited cargo space and only 25% more efficient than a Model 3? Total niche product. Not sure which niche though, since the width of the front wheels makes it much less useful as far as finding gaps in traffic compared to a motorcycle. It's clearly not suitable for family use other than as second or maybe even third vehicle. Maintaining a whole fleet of vehicles for family use doesn't strike me as efficient use of resources. I suspect the reason for the suboptimal 3 wheel design is just to avoid regulations that apply to vehicles with four wheels. Something similar with four wheels could probably take 4 people while being in almost the same price range by avoiding airbags, crash tests and so on. That could be interesting as a cheap starting product for a new car manufacturer. Since the CEO seems all in on climate hysteria he probably loves government regulations though, so it should be all good.
