I bought two Schaubek albums some time ago. The Europe one weighs 6 kilograms. I am returning to my favorite youth hobby in old age. I have discovered many pre 1900 stamps in the 2 albums. It really is a great hobby.

Cool idea! I have a lot of duplicates and this might also be a solution. Would love to see a video on how your sales go on eBay!

I collected stamps as a teenager and got a lot of pleasure with this pastime. However, as an adult my life changed dramatically, and I lost interest ( as well as loosing all my collection). Now, as I approach 70, I am thinking about reviving my childhood interest in collecting stamps once again. Thank you for your video, it helps me revive my interest.

I just rediscovered my old collection from childhood that included some of my father's pre-war Latvian collection. It has inspired me to focus and complete my father's Latvian collection 1919 to WWII. A friend collects banknotes of the same era and what interests me is how the social and political history is reflected. Having been a graphic designer I am equally fascinated by the designs. So thank you for your videos I was moved to watch after my rediscovery, unpacking my old library.

I think you smacked it outta the park with your starter pack idea! 🤩 $10 is a good price too👍 To me a very interesting side topic from this video is both sides of Crystal Mount. This collector probably worked in the 70s- early 80's, when CM was at its peak. I had a ton of the stuff before I went to Showgards, glassiness, and stock books. I don't think it is possible to remove Crystal Mount without severely impacting the page. On the other hand, I bet it saved the stamps in that (sadly) mildewed album. Also, you really have something with that Berlin collection! It's been a hot area for quite a while now, especially some of the later issues. I would not break those up. Thanks for another outstanding video! Hopefully we can do some business in 2024!

You have put together great starter stamp packets. It is really a great idea! It is also great that you made them so variable with at least one high end stamp included. Positivity about the future of stamp collecting is probably a good influence on what the future will be. Thanks again for the excellent video.

Thanks for another video 😊 Purchased 2 packs for the grand boys. One boy loves everything WW II. He reads a lot and plays the board games I played as a kid.

It's a challenge to deal with old albums that are damaged, musty, full of old mounts, etc. I get box lots that sometimes include stuff like this and I always enjoy rescuing stamps even if I just pass them along... and I still manage to find fun things for my collection even when lots are cherry picked. It is funny to bring in four banker's boxes crammed stuff and when I'm done I end up with a shoe box of sorted undamaged stamps in glassines.

It hurts me a little bit to see this pretty neat collection of German stamps "destroyed". But hey, who am I to criticise a decision you have already made. So, good luck on your little assortment of starter packs ! 🤞 Greets from GER, U.

Did so reluctantly... and kept it mostly in tact. The other ones were too damaged to save, unfortunately, and I hope it's for a good cause!

If you put the stinky one in a paper bag with baking soda you can improve it at least to some extent

As a recent returnee to the hobby... with a gap of some forty eight years(!) I find these videos from Silk 'otW' wonderful. This particular episode has given me some great ideas for my own projects of trading stamps if only in a small way to fund my hobby. By the way... does anybody else think that this guy (Silk) sounds exactly like Tom Hanks? Looking forward to more episodes!

Great idea Silk. It has given me an idea of what to do with some of my extras. I’ll figure out a way to move them along to someone who is would enjoy them.

Unfortunately, there are not many children-or teen-agers that are into stamp collecting today. When I started in 1972, there was nothing or almost nothing. My mother suggested to me, that hobby, and I am still doing this after all these years.But Silk's idea to sell or give stamps is a great idea. I unfortunately don't know any kids that are interested in stamps.

@@davidcolombier5673 Hi David, I have 2 grandsons who started collecting two years ago. Both watch Silk and others with me. They really enjoy it a lot. If you have extra stamps PLEASE send them for their collections. They will enjoy your generosity. They loved the ones Silk sent 😊 Thanks Steven Kressel 1209 Fordham Lane Chesapeake VA 23320

Grab bags are an easy way to put your collection up for sale, have you considered selling sets or groups of stamps, Empire, Federal, Official, etc. I could use those Federal Souvenir sheets your putting in the packs, but not all the stamps. Since it's a grab bag you really don't know if your buying stuff you need. Just an idea, hope you sell off this collection, a lot of stamps to sell. Also I want to thank you, I paid attention to one of your tips and hit a bunch of killer purchases, thank you for that. Good selling and thanks for all these really fun videos.

Glad to hear! And good advice on selling... I'm not quite there yet, still like the idea of collecting more than selling, but I know that selling duplicates helps build your collection... just thought I'd do these starter packs to get folks interested in the hobby hopefully

Hi Silk. You can't see the damage if you put another stamp on it. Merry Xmas to you and your family. Best regards from James in Scotland.

2:14 with stamp collecting old stamps you need to think of the way it was made, how many hands that stamp has gone through, and the age of that stamp. It is fascinating to think how it has survived and as time moves on that stamp ages aswell, some already over 100 years.
@silkontheweb

Agreed! I love thinking about the history of the stamps... all that they went through to get to my collection...

I think the digital age and email hurt the hobby a lot but I believe another reason is the self adhesive stamps. Sure, we can remove the stamps from envelopes with certain chemicals but it takes more effort and cost. Do they even sell single self adhesive stamps anymore? And how would a kid start a stamp collection with modern stamps and not much of a budget?
@silkontheweb
@silkontheweb 8 месяцев назад
I think you're right... the days of kids soaking of stamps from an envelope they got in the mail are probably, mostly, behind us... but the hobby will continue with collectors I bet

It also varies by country. I’ve had a lot of luck soaking newer German stamps. A drying book has really helped. I didn’t know that existed until I saw it on RU-vid!

Call me strange or dramatic, but I find collecting stamps of countries that are or were dictatorships to be not really unethical but distasteful. I believe this is especially true of nations' governments that are still in power because you are essentially gifting them with hard currency when buying new issues. If Nazi Germany still existed would anyone consider handing them U.S. dollars for stamps, thusly improving the image of their government? I think not. I think this transcends politics and for me crosses a line, which is why I also feel one should collect Taiwan over the PRC any day of the week. That DDR collection should be thrown in the garbage.......it was an evil, brutal totalitarian state. Yes, I am dramatic but just how I feel.
@MartinBruun-yo8jn

I agree with you about some present day countries. Countries like North Korea, Russia and such. I would never buy any of their new issues, because those regimes benefits from collectors buying their stamps. But dead countries like DDR, Nazi Germany, Belgian Congo etc. is another thing. I consider them as part of our common history. A history that we should not forget or deny, but learn from instead. And learning about history, and also the darker side of it, is a big part of what make collecting stamps interesting for me.
