The G&G Hawk MUDD Knife: The Full Nick Shabazz Review

The G&G Hawk MUDD is a really weird, really neat knife, designed to be resilient in pretty much any condition. And, somehow, they seem to have pulled it off, creating a very specialized tool which is not for everybody, but absolutely a gem.

Great to see coverage of G&G Hawk knives. It's always interesting to see the designs regardless of how likely I am to purchase.

Looks like something CRKT would make, except they would use AUS 8... As far as maintenance, where I work, we have sealed bearings running in environments that reach temperatures of a few hundred degrees and will last 20 years. If they did it right, that knife probably would never need maintenance in the pivot system.

I think CRKT has bought designs from these guys before, which would suggest your design intuition is correct. Not 100% sure though.

@@MaxvonHippel The CRKT D.O.G in 2003 was the first collaboration between the Hawks and a major manufacturer, at least that I'm aware of. It must have gone really well too, since every subsequent collab (excluding the Ti-Lock) has been with KAI...

That's a freakin' weird knife in some ways... But, it has a whole freakin' lot going for it, though. Especially when I drop the freakin' thing in the freakin' pond I don't even freakin' have.... Overall, a really cool freakin' video/review from a one of my top freakin' RU-vidrs.... :) :) Confession time.... I am one of the viewers who love big freakin' murdery knives... BUT, after seeing the Delica used in so many size comparisons, I finally freakin' bought one. A ZOME Green 4..... And, I have to say, I freakin' love it..... It has somehow found its way into my pocket over the RAT, or ZT 0630, or even the Benchmade 710... What am I supposed to freakin' do now? lol.... Thanks for opening my freakin' eyes to a completely new idea in knife carry!

Love this knife. Was a grail for me when I got it almost a year ago and still love it. It's the only folder I have that I never worry about beating up on. Neat things about it: It actually has a second locking/spring mechanism for the detent. The ZT version is even bigger, the custom version is far smaller. Milit knives actually make these for G&G Hawk.

Damn.. I so wanted this to be a bigger knife. I know you have little back scratcher looking hands, but still.. for the money and the design considerations, i would be happier if it were the size of an 0200 or something. As it is, I like the knife overall.. it looks a lot like a 'roided up version of the old Uzi folder United Cutlery put out many many years ago sans the recurved edge. Nice looking blade. If it were yours, would you have challenged the 'gritproofing' more or not (given the PITA disassembly would be without the proper pin-spanner)?
@NickShabazz
@NickShabazz 7 лет назад
Absolutely. I gave it a solid go, which simulated the worst I'd probably subject a knife to, and it did fine. But if it were mine to abuse, there would be abrasives.

It has a lot of good but I'd never carry it with that detent. Part of the good is the lock but I assume that is the cause of the weak detent too..
@blademaker25
@blademaker25 7 лет назад
The lock and detent are separated. The detent can easily be beefed up. When I make them tighter, people want it looser, when made looser, people want it harder. I even had a guy in New York that wanted the knife to be opened with two hands. . .really hard detent.

It's thick and pinned, but otherwise the Aluminum scales and AUS8 blade make it higher quality than other "tool company" knife offerings. I got one for free with a large tool purchase, and I do occasionally use it, but I never would have spent actual money on it. There's your review. If you carry it and use it for work, it's obviously good enough for you so why do you care about what a youtube reviewer thinks?
