Today, we're going to take a look at the G&G Hawk MUDD Automatic, a spectacular, purpose built knife, which takes an already excellent design and improves and streamlines it into something wonderful.
Speaking of steel choices, you are completely underestimating CTS-XHP, Nick. It's only very slightly less corrosion resistant than M390 (which is already extremely rust resistant) and quite a bit tougher. Also, its edge retention is better than S35VN and Cru-Wear. It's really no slouch.
I think it’s innovative to have a knife that does not need maintenance other than sharpening. Makes me think of the simplicity of a fixed blade but with the benefit of being able to be twice as compact when folded. Time will tell how robust the pivot is but not everyone gets excited about taking a knife apart for maintenance and some knives are tricky to put back together. Nice review!
I live in FLA and often will find grit and sand in my knife pivots after working outside. I think this maybe the knife for me given the humidity and soil conditions in this part of the country. Awesome review as always. Thanks, Nick!
I always thought the MUDD would be uncomfortable until I actually bought one. Awesome knife and surprisingly good in the hand. As others have said, another run in LC200N with more blade/handle finish options would be great.
I have been on the Hawk eMail List and the Holt List for quite some time......I REALLY want to have one of each in my knife collection. I love the gray MUDD with the dark blade. I like well-made variety in my collection. Without the price being CRAZY! Thanks for reinforcing what my own research concluded. ..that this is a great knife and a little different...BUT...built with a purpose in mind. Cool stuff!!!!!
I wish the Hawks or CRKT (whoever has the rights) would rerelease the older Hawk/CRKT collabs like the D.O.G. lock for the nostalgia value but update the materials a bit. I have a feeling there would be a significant number of customers who would, like I do, want to get one because of the novel mechanism. I think my affection for unusual stuff is why I love their work and the work of designers like Demko.
This nice is really nice. I think you were a little rough on it. It’s not that heavy and being what it is, it’s not as thick as most heavy duty users. I have to say I handled one and was just blown away, and considering I own much more expensive automatics and heavy duty knives, that don’t cut, slice, beat as well as this knife. It’s also very nice not to have to worry about things getting into the inside of the working parts of the knife. Like you said “it is a gem”.
I will say, it is frustrating that it is a proprietary pivot. I like the ability to dissassemble all of my knives. That being said, in theory, you should not need to take it apart, but if you do for some reason Gavin has some of the best customer service ever. He fixed lockrock and slip in my Dauntless in one week. So if, for some reason, you do need to have the knife cleaned it wont be gone for long at all. Kind of kicking you in the balls then giving an ice pack, but maybe a light kick and a good ice back. It is better than a lot of other knives that err in this way.
Walter W I 1used to think that way until I compared hours of use. Knife used daily. Gun never. Now I rather spend 500 on something I use and gives me pleasure daily
John J. Baranski this is exactly how I think and why I started getting into knives more. Also this knife is 390$. Most guns I’m interested in are way more than that.
Look nothin for nothin, but I have this knifes old brother from a nother mother. ZT 0500 MUDD. 4.08 as a birthday. proof this is an animal of a design...TANK that doesn't break down no matter what freakin crud or crap you get into. Nice video Nick
It's like a sealed bearing for an automobile. That sealed bearing SHOULD be good for the rest of your life and beyond. They don't need a random jackass pulling it apart and not being able to put it back together.
Le Lemon good luck selling a knife guy a $400 blade that can’t be resharpened and reprofiled and polished on a fancy fixed-angle sharpening system. Or even just maintained on a strop. People are complaining about not being able to take this knife apart even though they’d never have any need to, ever.
