The Galactic Supply Chain Was a Huge Liability for the Republic

The Galactic Republic was always to big to be destroyed by an outside force, but years of internal neglect and bureaucracy created a huge liability within the republics own borders. When the Clone Wars started the Separatist Alliance was a in a great position to exploit this hidden weakness.

@@lerneanlion the problem is the continuity of govenrment is never really broken. Even with the empire. The Emperor still used the governance of the republic, he jsut made it far stronger and more centralized until it fell and was taken over by ATRTR Who were led by the legally legitimate leaders in the senate. We never had something which truly broke the republic like say. “The Mandalorian Migrations” Where hosts of mandos descended on the republic as it fractured into several dozen factions with the mandalorians taking over much of it including coruscant and the core worlds. Such a scenario would mean it’s been broke. But as far as I remeber. Couruscant had been occupied by only the republic, Sith Empire, galactic Empire, and yuzong vong. But as I mentioned before non of those really broke the republic

A real life way to describe the application of the mid rim and outer rim when you mention “grouping by sector” is how the major European powers carved parts of Europe, Africa, and the Middle East up after WW I. It’s most prominent in the Balkan States and the Middle East where you had groups of people fundamentally and historically enemies. Yugoslavia is one, and Iraq in particular. The Kurds in northern Iraq were killed by Saddam with chemical weapons. Yugoslavia had a bunch of people forced together, most notably Kosovo. Africa still has unrest once the European powers (mainly France and the UK) left. Heck, it took almost a hundred years for South Africa to sort itself out, and that’s counting its colony state. By African standards, that’s a fairly stable country. I’m not saying anything with Egypt because they are still sorting themselves out after the Arab Spring and Mubarak. So I think you’re spot on with how that translates over to the Star Wars galaxy as a whole, whether it’s Republic, Empire, New Republic, or New Order. None of them have done a really good job of dealing with practical ruling, defense, and even standard of living. Unless you’re from the Core Worlds and have influence, you can pretty much forget about being treated fairly.

What would have happened to the Republic _and the Jedi_ if the Clone Wars never happened? [The Sith have a bad day and Master and apprentice get taken out] Also what if Palpatine just failed in his final plan; Anakin didn't prevent Mace either because he realised he was being played, or Windu actually let Ashoka share her warning? Then the Republic has the GAR and a militarised Jedi Order. Which would change the nature and power of both.
@Shepard0509

With any alternate history, you have to either brush away a lot of stuff or just ignore key facts or events. Using, canon Star Wars, some kind of separatist movement was going to happen. During the High Republic, there were attempts to open up the Outer Rim to trade but it failed. They removed trade tax to get companies like the Trade Federation to get involved (When the tax was put back, the Trade Federation began blockading worlds i.e. Naboo). Would the separatist movement involve military forces or the Jedi if the Sith weren’t around? Probably not. If the Sith had messed up and somehow not get involved or removed themselves from the galaxy, would the Force even create Anakin Skywalker? If Palpatine and Plegious somehow removed themselves from the picture, the Force would not have created Anakin as a response to their dark side experiments. If it was just Count Dooku, it might have stayed a pacifist movement.

Some people here are too into the memetic hazard of 'small government'. If anything, the Galactic Republic has _too little_ bureaucracy... or at least a too-small unelected bureaucracy. People forget that civilizations require immense (adjusted for population size and technological context) bureaucracies to even _function_ let alone thrive. Yes, even ancient civilizations needed an immense bureaucracy (outside of Rome, the primary holders of the bureaucracy were the religious caste/social tier, not the people) to function. Then there are the apparatuses to enforce that bureaucracy... which in both canons is _severely_ lacking in general (basically, the same situation that the USN currently faces: not enough personnel and material to do what the government is asking for it to do; Legends is especially atrocious given that the Judicial Forces have 'oh GOD so many' things to keep an eye on and practically nothing to cover with)...

Short version: The republic more or less gave corporations free range to colonize the outer rim. This let them avoid taxes and regulations at the cost of doing everything themselves: infrastructure, security, everything. After a while the republic tried to bring them back into the fold, and in protest the trade federation blockaded Naboo. This is where TPM starts. By encouraging them to invade, Palpatine shows how useless the current government is, getting the chancellor deposed and propelling himself into office.

To summarize it up: The Republic is too large. After all, the Republic will faced no problems such as shortage of manpower and resources if the Republic did not rule the entirety of the known galaxy. The Republic needed to share the galaxy with the other polities too even if they don't like them. That's why the Roman Empire lived so long after the Abbasid Caliphate came to be because the Abbasid Caliphate has no interest of besieging Constantinople but simply just raiding the Anatolian lands under the Romans for loots, slaves, symbolism and glory annually and the same also applied to the Roman Empire after the theme system is firmly applied into both the Balkans and Anatolia. I don't know if the same can be said about the First Bulgarian Empire and the Kievan Rus' but as long as their rights for trade, certain privileges and enclaves in Constantinople are maintained well, they really do not have problems with the Romans. Also, by alllowing the systems outside of the Republic to develop on their own, the Republic may actually found an ally like how the Roman Empire under the Isaurian dynasty formed an alliance with the Khazar Khaganate in the future. So yeah, this sounds good to me.

The Old Republic was doomed from the start, after 1000+ yrs of peace they simply weren't accustomed anymore to war and its sad consequences. They should've mantained some token armed forces and a STRONG Navy. Their mistake remember me of the idiotic decommissioning that stroke the USA after ACW, some politicians suggested of disbanding the Navy, after all the USA would've NEVER fought again another war! Sometime I think that Ruslan 's reforms were "suggested," by some alien parasites, as in an old episode of ST-TNG, when a lot of Starfleet 's admirals are infected by aliens.

I still refuse to believe that the Republic, especially without any central military force, was anything but a chaotic hellhole ruled by petty tyrannical warlords. You CANNOT convince me that over a million species, 10s of millions of cultures, religions, languages, and political beliefs existed in harmony without threat of overwhelming force from a central authority. Here on Earth, I'm anti-authoritarian. But in Star Wars, I'm all for the Empire. Not Palpatine and Vader and Tarkin, but more of a Thrawn styled Empire. Perhaps I'm too entrenched in Warhammer 40k. Perhaps that is coloring my ability to see the possibility of peaceful co-existence without threat of force being involved. Or perhaps I've seen too much in our own world. I've been to 9 different countries in Asia, Europe, and South America. Sometimes in a uniform and sometimes not. I've witnessed(and sometimes taken part in) racial, religious, political, and cultural conflicts. Perhaps all that has left me too jaded. I used to look up to the Republic as 'the good guys'. But now that I don't really assign 'good guy' status to anyone above a small group(small community at the higher ends), I can't help but feel frustration and disgust with the Republic and it's do-gooder idealism. Especially whenever the reality is corruption and authoritarianism, greed and corporate power over all. I dunno man.

notice how deep the world is and how deep the subsequent discussion can be with what Lucas did, then look at Disney canon, short cut the end of the empire with battle of Jaku and then basically have the new republic as a failure from the very start just to make the disney trilogy's backstory make sense, which is extremely lazy, explain things with one big event, and just make everyone seem like idiots, the same government that somehow came from the Rebellion that organized against the empire. Ironically because of the battle of Jaku, being a lazy way to destroy the imperial fleet, in disney canon, the galaxy would be more intact and the economy much stronger than in Legends, yet somehow Legends New Republic was not that poor and inept. Then look at legends that highlighted the ups and downs of the rebellion transitioning to the New Republic and dealing with the politics and military strategy of fighting against the empire. I guarentee you Thrawn's return in Timothy Zahn's trilogy will feel more epic than disney canon shadow council.

Trying to regulate and defend a territory that big is impractical in the extreme. Logistics makes the world go round. Star Wars needed a FedEx or UPS. Though they likely would have been corrupt CIS funders too.

Historically speaking, all too often if a security or police force is successful at reducing crime in their given area of patrol, political voices will often make the erroneous assumption that since there is less crime then a reduction in the size/capabilities of the police force should be implemented. This false assumption and implementation typically has one of two, if not both, outcomes all but inevitable: 1. The reduced police force allows criminal activity to increase. And/or: 2. The police force that is to lose a percentage of its funding is prone to falsify criminal activity, persecute innocent persons, ignore the rights of individuals, or any other kind of illegal activity in order to continue receiving current if not increased funding. I would also like to point out two other failings in the law enforcement/justice system: First, there is not a strong enough overwatch of law enforcement departments, the internal affairs department is highly inadequate. Second, there is too much of a fraternization between personal of law enforcement and of the judicial department. This fraternization jeopardizes the integrity of the three branches of government system. If the courts are too friendly with police, then the courts are liable to overlook discrepancies and even any kind of crime that law enforcement personnel perform. As an unfortunate victim of law enforcement and judicial corruption, I do agree that defunding or eliminating them is not the answer. Stricter oversight, recruitment, and training are a more logical solution. Give incentive to remain honest and enforce reprimandations against offending personnel. Being a good police officer means stopping criminals even if they are police officers, because once they begin breaking the law, they become criminals and not law enforcement. Allowing criminals to thrive in the departments of law enforcement brings a negative perception of the entire police force which makes for a negative relationship between law enforcement and the community of which they serve, thus making the job of legitimate police work much more difficult. Stop the criminals inside and your job will be easier outside. All easier said than done, cannot be denied. But saying it at least gives it any chance to get done.

One solder requires a supply chain to function; someone to make their weapons, their armour, their ammo, their uniform, their rucksacks, their food, medicines, sleeping bag etc. Someone in a city requires someone to make their cafe latte, their crossiants, someone to reply to a complaint 😂

8:03 The whole point with defunding the police is that when departments don’t have the resources to cover for officers when they fuck up, they’ll be force to do a better job. No one wants to remove them completely. You can divert the fundings elsewhere, towards helpful prevention instead of violent reaction. People hate the police because police easily get away with bullshit and giving them more money will not help, not to mention that the system was never designed with everyone’s best interest in mind. If police are held accountable to the same degree as any other profession when they fuck up, maybe people would feel safer having them around.

@Thelazybaboon-kn3dc What both sides of the argument? He made a MAJOR assumption in stating that the worst thing to happen *ever* was cops not patrolling areas where African American people lived. If you can't see what a major faux pas that is when looking at even a basic history book, we have nothing more to discuss. Your biases are even more glaring than his.

Been a subscriber for years and watch every vid you put out. Would you consider trying to sound more lively rather than dower? Star Wars is a fun subject but you don't seem even remotely excited anymore. Sounds like you're reading a book report aloud to a class but you hated the material. We'd prefer to hear the excitement we know you have, in your presentation
