THE GALACTUS TRILOGY - Lee and Kirby's Cosmic Marvel Epic 

Marvel's cosmic side is like DC's mystic side. It is the less explored but arguably more interesting part of their universe.

As a Kirby fan, I applaud this video. You show proper respect and reverence to The king!

The Fantastic Four is my favorite Marvel superteam. They have incredible powers, but also have very human personalities and problems.

Great stuff, I love how Johnny is traumatized by the things he saw when he went to retrieve the Ultimate Nullifier and his inability to comprehend the scope of what he saw, it was great way to demonstrate the scale of the story and stakes. Its a must read in my opinion.

This is where Marvel went galactic for true. And the famous *Kirby Crackle* to define cosmic energy usage, came into play. Classic trilogy. This is an excellent video and because of that, I've subbed.

This is a seriously excellent video. The Galactus Trilogy is the absolute pinnacle of Stan and Jack's collaborations and it's great to have it broken down and put into context so succinctly.

The credit argument between Jack and Stan (and Steve) is always so interesting to me. Yes, Jack and Steve's art is incredible and can stand on it's own, but once Stan's words are there do they not fit so perfectly? What else but Stan's over-written, over-dramatic prose can possibly fit Jack's highly detailed Gods and Steve's mind-bending surrealism? It's a shame their collaboration broke down over time, but this story is perhaps the perfect example of how when they worked together they created something beyond what either could do alone.

I love the fantastic four they are seriously one of the best teams in the marvel universe

Three things: 1) I was lucky enough to get a reprint of this storyline (just the Galactus parts) in the 1990s. I still consider THE high point of the Kirby/Lee team. Speaking of which... 2) The more I hear about the falling out between Lee and Kirby, the sadder I get. To me, they were a version of Jagger and Richards that never worked out their differences. I find the knee-jerk reactions to that split particularly appalling. They mostly ignore stuff like how Lee was ALWAYS willing to give Kirby massive credit where due and Kirby could take his claims too far (when claiming you actually created Spiderman is enough to make infamous recluse Steve Ditko come out hiding to call bullshit, you likely misremembered or mischaracterized what really happened...and I say that as a Kirby admiree). 3) The closest thing the MCU has to the FF is the Guardians of the Galaxy. It's a bit more Star Wars than FF (side note: I have heard rumors that the former was influenced by Kirby's Fourth World saga) but you can see the resemblance to the latter in the complicated family dynamics and the constant sense of exploration and discovery. Vol 2's Ego, another Kirby creation from comics, can even be considered a Galactus figure himself, albeit much human and loathsome.

Oh man...this is just legendary right here dude! You're really hitting the most classic of the classics!!

You really deserve as many subs as comicsexplained or comicstorian (probably more). Honestly they both aren't very impressive, Rob just rants for half an hour geeking out and comicstorian just spouts the story for people too lazy to read. You actually bring light to stories new and old and really analyze them without becoming pretentious or dragging it out too much. You hit that sweet spot of insight and pacing. Good job.

The fact that in order to use the ultimate nulifier correctly you need to stay focused to the max or that gizmo would eliminate everything in existence. Given the stakes in the story makes that simple arm stretching of Reed way More epic.

Awesome review of a classic Marvel story.

It is obvious that Kirby must have done more than Lee when it comes to creations. But I think people tend to be a little hard on Stan. If it wasn't for him, these *stories* probaply wouldn't have become the succes they became. Like many other artists in those days and up until the 90s where artists got the opportunity to have more (copy)rights and ownership over their work, Kirby was of course taken advantage of. The artists' work sure must have been quite more harder and demanding than Lee's writing. But we still owe it to Lee also no matter how you look at it; Stan & Jack was interlocked in like a magic realm. We all know that. Nothing of what Kirby did more on-his-own was as huge a succes as what he created with The Man.

Nicely done. Largely left out of current Marvel movie canon, Fantastic Four are still my personal favorite of Marvel Universe. The Galactus Trilogy, featuring Silver Surfer was Kirby & Lee at their absolute best.

I came across you by way of your pieces on Waid's Daredevil and Loeb/Sale's Spider-Man. I'd just finished reading both of those, incidentally, when I decided to look up whether they had been discussed by someone in some form. You were the only guy who came up on search, and immediately you struck me as somebody with an earnest love for stories and their nuance. Few people I've seen match your enthusiasm, and fewer still choose to cover what you have -- from thoughtful assessments of Vince Guaraldi's Peanuts soundtracks to Moore's run on friggin' Swamp Thing of all books. It's all like a nesting doll of niche interest. Your thoughtfulness has helped to effectively consolidate my re-emergent love of the comic book medium in a way it hasn't been since years back. Your discussions are gems hidden in plain sight, and really the best alternative to certain superficial overviews that the bigger channels provide in the wake of nationwide cinematic-universe-fever. I hope you keep doing what you're doing, as well as you're doing it, so that more people get to discover newer and stranger stories to love, or maybe to re-discover them like I have. Thanks. And speaking of early-Marvel partnerships, maybe a retrospective on crotchety-ol'-boy Ditko's work is a good idea. I love everything Kirby did for Marvel to pieces, but I feel like Ditko stays unreasonably unsung for, y'know, the guy who co-birthed Spider-Man. Doctor Strange specifically was a gorgeous book.

Silver Surfer and his master Galactus appeared for the first time in FF #48 (Cover 03/1966, avaible on 1965-12-08). While Galactus is created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby together, Silver Surfer was created by Jack Kirby alone.

im just wish when the stars aline,and we get an adaptation of the fantastic four and the galactus trilogy for the mcu.

Even after all these decades I still consider this the most epic of all comic book arcs (with the singular exception of Crisis, which is a bittersweet moment in time). I think what they understood back then that is completely lost now is that when such amazing moments (also team-ups and crossovers) are done they need to be done sparingly; that not only makes them truly special, rare moments, but also give the experience time to breath and let the ramifications sink in. Otherwise it becomes just business as usual; mondane. I think the same is on size of arcs; when it goes on for too long or has far too many tie-ins it goes from epic to monotonous (or at the very least financially unreasonable).

I love Alex Ross' realism and work a huge fan, but there's absolutely no one before or since that could make a two dimmentional image come alive like Mr. Kirby you could feel action. Long live the " King".

I remember all three issues. I may still have one or two of them. These are the issues I fell in love with Kirby's visuals and just as important the admiration of the galactic being...The Silver Surfer. Also just the mention of the New Gods gives me shivers. Although I'm no DC fan at all, The New Gods kicked ass and Marvel's The Inhumans rocked my world.

This is the reason why Galactus, SS and F4 have got to be saved for their own movie/movies in phase 4. It's rich content could stand alone if it wanted to.

4:40 let’s not forget that several times throughout their collaboration Jack would make comics entirely out of his own ideas either ignoring Stan or not being given anything to work with at all. Artists like Kirby and Ditko had much more influence in the story than Lee. Especially in the early days. It’s just sad to see many new “fans” think Stan is this all perfect creator of all things Marvel when that is far from the truth. Sure he’s not a fraud on the level of Bob Kane, but he certainly doesn’t deserve all the credit he gets while Jack Kirby definitely deserves a lot more.

Excelsior and Nuff Said! For me, Smilin' Stan and Jolly Jack were the Lennon and McCartney of comics - they were never quite as good apart as they were together, with Jack and John being the fiery, raw artistic geniuses who both left us far too soon, and Stan and Paul being the charismatic showmen who may never have seemed to be as creatively radical as their partners - on the surface at least - but who were nevertheless the most consummate craftsmen in their fields that you'll ever see, yes? (Heck, if you wanted to push the Beatles/Bullpen alchemic analogy still further, then you could see Sturdy Steve Ditko and George Harrison as the so-called 'Quiet Ones' who were somewhat overshadowed by their respective partners, but who still pushed their respective mediums into exotic new territory when given the chance...of course, the analogy falls down a bit when you try to think of a Marvel counterpart to good ol' Ringo...Jazzy Johnny Romita, maybe?). PS: Any chance that you could cover the truly fantastic Dan Slott/Mike Allred 'Silver Surfer' run in a future video, please? It's not just my favourite recent Marvel comic, but my second favourite comic series full stop to have come out during the last few years, although James Roberts' 'Transformers: More Meets the Eye'/'Lost Light' series for IDW Comics just takes First (No-)Prize for me...(another excellent series which would also form another worthy subject for a future video of yours too as far as I'm concerned, but I digress...).
