This late 1940s/early 1950s rather graphic color film about carelessness and safety operating heavy machinery is presented by Caterpillar. Casino games are shown, including a chuck-a-luck birdcage. A man plays Russian Roulette. He pulls the trigger but the gun doesn’t fire (:05-1:25). A bulldozer operator moves alongside a cliff with large rocks on top. The correct method is to push the rocks over first (2:00-2:50). A bulldozer knocks over a tree (2:58-3:33). The Russian Roulette player pulls the trigger but the gun doesn’t fire (3:35). A worker bends down to change the cutting edge. The equipment falls. A Missouri Certificate of Death is filled out. The safe way is to block up the machinery first (3:46-5:04). The driver opens a road grader’s petcock. The pressure drops to zero but he forgets to close it. Driving it the following day with no brakes, the accident is shown between it and a 1940s Chevy (5:17-6:40). A worker jumps down from a grader without setting the brake. The driverless machine rolls down the hill towards three boys. Properly setting the brakes is shown, as is grounding the blade, dropping the bucket, and lowering the bowl (6:50-8:03). A worker parks a bulldozer without lowering the blade. Boys play on the dozer. A child climbs under the blade as another child lowers it (8:05-9:04). A driver, flagged by a man, jumps off with the dozer still running. He slips as he climbs on. A rolled up pant leg shows an amputated leg (9:27-10:06). Another worker makes an adjustment to the clutch with the engine running. He accidently raises the blade. A bloodied man is shown trapped between the front of the dozer and the back of the blade (10:09-10:37). The Russian Roulette player pulls the trigger but the gun doesn’t fire (10:40). A worker steps over a cable while it is winched, injuring himself (10:45-11:36). A shovel lifts and swings over the Caterpillar operator’s head and dumps the load. The correct way is to wave him out of his seat and don’t swing over his head while dumping (11:45-12:25). The Russian Roulette player pulls the trigger but the gun doesn’t fire (12:46). A bad practice is to stand in the way while lining up a drawbar or hitching a ride on one, or riding anywhere but on the seat (12:49-13:33). Two graders race against each other (13:36-13:55). Grease is shown on the deck plate and steps. Loose tools and chains should not be on the deck. Never fill a tire directly in front but stand to the side. A worker pours gasoline into a tank while smoking a lit cigarette (14:07-14:55). A group of workers sit eating lunch. Another sits behind the machine and looks at his pocket watch before napping. The driver jumps on and backs up without checking around the machine (14:57-16:13). Workers try to remove a log while the equipment is running (16:39-18:05). The Russian Roulette player puts a bullet into the gun, spins, and pulls the trigger. A bullet fires (18:46-19:00).

Kids were sure more excited about machines back then. When I was a kid (that wasn't in the 1950s) we would hang around forever around anyone with a remote controlled model, hoping to see something exciting. Often, the guy wasn't even able to operate his model, because stuff was unreliable back then. Now, we fly one RC plane after another and the kids don't even look as they walk by.

For some reason he left it running, left the son in the seat, with the bucket raised he went into the engine to do something. The kid dropped the bucket. That was the last time Dave ever saw his son. Kids played wherever the hell they wanted back in the day, especially in the country. What, was a parent going to come out and follow us around everywhere to make sure we didnt get hurt? They had shit to do, and it was up to us not to get hurt. We had a fairly busy paved road in front of our house, with lots of heavy trucks from the creamery passing every day. I was out riding my bike on that road by the time I was 7 or so. I knew not to go out in the road. And while I wouldnt be playing on a construction site while the workers were there, I would definitely be on those machines the moment they were gone for the day. Sorry chief, if you decide to take a nap underneath someone's tire then that's your fault for shaking hands with danger, not theirs.

I just recently started working for Caterpillar and I have to say, a lot of company's preach safety but ultimately don't follow through, Caterpillar actually abides by their safety rules or at least where I'm at anyway. Safety, Quality and then quantity.

BTW if I counted right it was the 6th shot that got the gambler. He beat the odds, for a while but the house always wins eventually.

I was trained on a newer earth mover they stuck me on the hood and I held on for dear life as the boss was driving up and down the side of a mountain building a airport in Ruston LA . It makes all of this look safe .

So well done! I had an idiot employee that once left a backhoe/frontloader propped up in the air with just the front bucket and the back bucket holding up the entire machine. I was horrified when I saw it. Not only could a seal break and severly damage the machine, kids could have played on it and hit the levers and rolled the machine.

Takes me back to 1987 there in a welding shop, we watch the safety film of a crane operator getting the jib caught up in a Transformer he seen the sparks flying, jumped off the crane and instantly electrocuted from the voltage passing through it, then comes a crummy of three guys driving by, they stop too see what wrong, they all run over there to grab the guy, not knowing that the whole place is electrified and they all three get killed two.

It's interesting how little design for safety was present. No roll cages, brake valves you need to manually close, clutch adjustments that require standing in unsafe positions, no deadman switches.
