www.ted.com When game designer Jane McGonigal found herself bedridden and suicidal following a severe concussion, she had a fascinating idea for how to get better. She dove into the scientific research and created the healing game, SuperBetter. In this moving talk, McGonigal explains how a game can boost resilience -- and promises to add 7.5 minutes to your life.
TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Featured speakers have included Al Gore on climate change, Philippe Starck on design, Jill Bolte Taylor on observing her own stroke, Nicholas Negroponte on One Laptop per Child, Jane Goodall on chimpanzees, Bill Gates on malaria and mosquitoes, Pattie Maes on the "Sixth Sense" wearable tech, and "Lost" producer JJ Abrams on the allure of mystery. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design, and TEDTalks cover these topics as well as science, business, development and the arts. Abstract: 1. Physical resilience: Move a bit every hour instead of sitting still, for example stand up and take 3 steps or lift your arms up for 5 seconds (increases physical health). 2. Mental resilience: Snap fingers with both hands for exactly 50 times or count from 100 to 0 with decrements of 7 (yes you stop at 2 or -5) (increases willpower and other things). 3. Emotional resilience: Watch in or out the window or look at a picture of your favourite baby animal (Feel love. I take it you have to try and look at people when you are watching in or out of your window). Try to think of, or experience 3 good things for every 1 bad thing as often as bad things occur. 4. Social Resilience: Shake hands with someone for 6 seconds or send a message to someone saying "thank you" (boost your oxytocin by touching people or showing gratitude). Repeat often (didn't say clearly how often but for the rest of your life) and live 10 years longer than is the average age of people.

I will NEVER regret my time playing video games. That time is when I met the greatest people in my life. My best friend, my lover, etc. Of course, I regret the choices I made because of video games... But a minute wasting your real life playing video games is a minute living your life in the virtual world. Games have taught me many social skills (How to make creative comebacks) and that sometimes, the best people you will never meet, you will find in these games. The best and worst parts have been brought out of me while I play games. Protection of the screen. It's made me more sociable than in real life, I'm more willing to stand up for myself. This TED talk was probably one of the best I've ever watched.

This was truly the most inspiring Ted Talk I've ever watched/listened to. I enjoy Ted Talks just for new perspective on things and to somewhat expand my mind, but this one truly overshadowed every other talk in my opinion. This talk really felt different and really special compared to the rest. Jane really does have a true passion for what she's sharing with us, and I have the utmost respect for her. The only other person that's moved me as much as Jane has is Allan Watts, and it my eyes, that's saying A LOT. Thank you Jane, for such a new and inspirational perspective on living life. As a gamer, this has given me some purpose to my lifestyle. But it's also made me feel I can use my lifestyle to more true meaning in life itself. I just really can't express how moving this talk was to me. Jane, you really are a true inspiration, and that's no exaggeration in my eyes. Thank you for taking the time to express these views to the rest of us.

Video games are traditionally scorned as a time-and-brain waster, but that may not have to be the case! I agree completely. I really like games. They entertain me when I'm bored, they distract me from problems I can't fix, they provide creative solutions for ones I can fix, and they give a form of social interaction even if I can't hang out with my friends (like when it's 3:30 in the morning haha). Games aren't all I do, they're actually kind of low on my list of most performed activities, but I can definitely appreciate them :) 'All things in moderation' is the key, I think.

I know right we need a good high end game which employs all these basic principles, but also a good educational story, educational experience, just basically an entire art piece of a game designed to educate you, and teach you! Honestly one could fit in so much into a game its not even a joke heck if I made a game I could probably brainwash and hypnotise those who play it :p (probably)

I love this talk, but it would have been nice to hear Jane at least briefly acknowledge addiction in gaming. My younger sister and her boyfriend of ten years had serious problems with his 40 hour a week gaming habit. Further, Most people who say that "gaming is a waste of time" have probably been addicted to a game and actually have wasted time to the detriment of other more important things in life, like relationships with their loved ones.

@notMattGarska
@notMattGarska 7 лет назад
***** Not true, for example the Bropka tribe has been vegan for 5000 years so there you go. But really, the term "vegetarian" used to indicate vegans, up to the 1900s. The term vegan was only coined in 1944 after some vegetarians started eating eggs and milk. We had veganism for a loooooooooong time. We have records of veganism way before than the greeks, plus animal farming if I remember correctly is only 10k years old, while we have learned cooking 2 million years ago. So more than 99% of our story and evolution we were hunter/gatherers, but really the hunter part has been overexagerated to an incredible extent. We come from herbivorous apes and we've been herbivorous ourselves for a looooong time. If you want to be hyper precise you can say that those apes DID in fact eat around a 5% of insects on their diet, while the rest 95% was vegetables, nuts, etc. As all herbivores, we can digest meat (remember mad cow?), but we get artherosclerosis from it as we don't have cholesterol self-regulation as carnivores have. Also none of us have any hunting instinct whatsoever, and that's pretty immediate to notice.

Also forgot to quote the simplest example: Jainism. Look into those guys...

EpicBunty Veganism is what Vegetarianism was for centuries. Somebody started creating confusion in the first 1900s, so in 1944 they had to create a new word to say "we don't want to exploit animals in ANY way", to make it clearer.

Your data is very skewed, do you mind checking on it? Our actual ancestors are plant based and in fact herbivores just like we are. Btw herbivore does not mean you can ONLY digest plant matter, you can also tolerate meat (as, in fact, we feed FISH to our cows). Longest population is okinawans and they have been vegans for a long time, with some eating some fish. Now they are eating meat and others and their life expectancy is plummeting. I am not too sure about the traditional diet of sardinians. There are few centenarian vegetarians because there are few centenarians. There are centenarian smokers because there are millions of smokers. Does not prove smoking is healthy, no? Omega 3s come naturally from seeds and nuts. We do not actually know between the various types of Omega 3 what is best. But we do know that we get artheriosclerosis from meat, thing that only happens to herbivores eating meat. Because carnivores regulate their own colesterol. And we don't. We used meat to survive opportunistically but it harms us, always will. There is a vast scientific consensus that is coming up on the plant based diet, the more time passes the more we have evidence that is the best alternative. The info is already out there, but of course is contrasted by lots of propaganda (if meat is unhealthy and everyone knows it, who will we sell it too then? it's a problem of economics). We already know that red meat is between the most toxic things you could ingest, at this point undeniably carcinogenic in its processed form and almost surely carcinogenic as unprocessed. (give it a few years, they will declare that too). There aren't as many studies on poultry as fish but we know fish is so heavily laced with mercury there is no point in even doing that research at this point. Maybe it could have been healthy, doesn't matter, it's poisonous now. As for dairy there is nothing else on the market with more antibiotics and hormones in it. For the very nature of milk. It's milk. It has hormones. We also added extra hormones into the cow because money.

If everyone knew what the reasons to go vegan are and why they make sense, we'd already all be vegans. There are so many ways to look at it, and no downsides. You can go in it for your own economy (a WAYYYY cheaper diet, WAYYYY cheaper than the standard), for ecology, for ethics, for compassion, for your own health, even for peace. It is a lifestyle of NO VIOLENCE against anyone.
