I remember trading all my games at GameStop to be able to afford this game and the level of disappointment I had when starting madden 13 has yet to be matched.
Good ole madden 07, the amount of time I spent on the game was honestly alarming. But I wouldn’t trade it back for anything, the glory days of madden. I truly miss it.
I remember the day my neighbor got it on launch, and once he popped it in, we were trying to figure out where the soundtrack was. We looked it up and to our horror the only soundtrack was a 2 minute “gridiron” orchestra track on repeat. It only got worse from there as we discovered some of our favorite modes and features became casualties.
I really miss the NFL superstar mode. You talking about it reminded me how fun it was to go through everything and get drafted based off of performance. I also sincerely miss being able to create my own team from the ground up. I loved making my own brand. Not the 25 teams EA built for you
It’s simple, once EA got the NFL license the only innovation they have now is to figure out ways to put out the same crap with minimal effort & make as much money as possible at the same time.
@@ryananderson5202 not that’s not “capitolsim” because one of the core and most important factors of capitalism is competition, this isn’t capitalism this is a disgrace
I remember in one of the maddens I created an entire new league. Spending hours customizing 32 new teams and putting them in franchise mode. That was one of my favorite franchises I have ever played
I remember bringing home my copy of Madden 13 for the first time and not seeing create a team and being extremely disappointed. Also not being able to edit jersey numbers was extremely aggravating considering players could be the same number.
I knew shit was gonna go bad when I watched the trailer for the game and they said they were combining superstar mode and franchise. It all went down hill from there
@@tjking6494 madden 13 on the wii still had a good franchise mode as madden 13 on the wii was a completely different game from the ps3/xbox360 version of the game
I’m not even a Madden fan. I found out about your channel from Angry Joe’s Madden 22 review. But I do appreciate all the work you’ve done on exposing the laziness and greed of EA. You do a great job getting your point across. I’ll gladly give you a sub for the your hard work.
My friend and i played M13 alot but we mostly went back to M12 to make a created team. Eventually we played M25 all the time instead of other games. We even skipped playing 15 and 16 together to play M25
I used to spend hours in franchise mode preparing for the draft. Working out college players, and getting my draft board ready. I loved it. Haven’t been that invested in a madden game in well over a decade.
I gave up on Madden about this time, but because of your exceptional videos I recently bought a used XBox 360 and PS2 on EBay as well as APF 2K8, ESPN 2k5, Madden 08, NCAA06, MVP Baseball 2005 and NHL 14. I had no idea you were so young. Your content is exceptional and your presentation is top notch. Don't get discouraged and keep the videos coming. I will catch up on your videos YT neglected to put in my recommended list.
You hit it on the money. This was honestly my first madden I returned. It wasn’t interesting at all and after a couple of days of playing it, I returned it to GameStop. I definitely noticed a decline from this game moving forward.
I will NEVER forget this game. It was my senior year of HS and my dad surprised me with this game ( I had a summer job so the past few Maddens I bought with my own money) so it meant a lot as it was a cool gift. I remember popping this in day one and just seeing the horrific state of the game, it literally was halfway done! Like you mentioned you couldn't edit the players and the biggest thing was the load glitch. I started a "connected career" and played the franchise saw how horrible it was and switched to being a player, saved both. BUT the game would not let you load at all. You were stuck playing the last save that you had. IT TOOK LIKE A WEEK TO FIX. Those MFs really sold us a game for $60 and it was barely even worth a $5 bill. 🤬 I will forever tell my children and grandchildren about this. Luckily, my dad was able to send it back and get his money back.
just recently viewed your videos about Madden for the first time, and man... you're spot on. From someone who has consistently bought these games since I was 8 (Madden 07') the games have consistently gotten worse. I'm so happy that you've brought attention to these issues. Maybe one day we can have an actual FOOTBALL GAME that is actually fun and not "give us a bunch of money and you'll be good at MUT" smh. Thanks for the awesome content man!!
Its so crazy that when this came out I specifically remember trying to return because I somehow thought I got a bad copy w/o a franchise mode. Dam, great video bro.
The AI in Be A Player drove me nuts. I’d be the Jaguars QB and so the CPU would control Jones-Drew for me, who was like a 96 overall. And he was always awful- would make cuts and jukes when NO ONE was around him and would get 2 yard gains at the most
They still do that; HBs (on your team only, for some reason) are very much like NFL HBs except instead of running laterally until there's a hole so they can go upfield, they'll go upfield only long enough until a lateral lane opens up so they can get 2.0 ypc.
Since you love Nintendo, maybe talk about the rise and fall of Madden on Nintendo consoles? This would be a great compromise between what you like to talk about and what we like to hear!
I remember playing madden 09 on the wii and really liking it and then being extremely disappointed when I got madden 11-13. Could never play it on the wii again after that
@@MattBuckeyeGuy The first madden game I ever had was Madden 11 for the Wii. I didn't know what other editions were like so I had nothing to compare it to. But I still played the shit out of it and still have lots of fun coming back to it today. Today, my favorite Madden is Madden 11 on the PS2, not the 7th gen.
This game made me switch over to the NCAA games as my preferred game, because if nothing else, it had an online teambuilder that was very in depth, the recruiting/scouting system was unique, and the game felt alive, like it had a defined character to it.
Ncaa was good but everyone is tripping I remember playing this game as a kid and it was actually good idk why everyone is saying this game is trash y’all are on meth
This was the first Madden game I ever played. If it wasn’t for your videos, I would have never known about the greatness that ESPN NFL 2K5 and played other classic great sports games like NBA 2K11, NHL 04, and MVP Baseball 05. Thanks a bunch, my dude, keep up the good work
i remember being 11 when this came out and just getting into football for the first time and being so blown away by Madden 13. but then, as i got older and played more Madden games from the past, i realized that all i liked was the semi updated graphics and the updated rosters. this game had soooo much potential though. i dug the aesthetic but they botched like every other aspect of the game. i also remember it would freeze constantly.
Also a reminder that fantasy drafts was never included in Madden 13, and it took them months to add it back. And you could only do it if you did an online franchise, so you had to make a private one man online franchise just to do a fantasy draft.
Great video. This is the game that killed Madden because of MUT. Not having a fantasy draft until patch was irritating too. However, I really enjoyed the depth of story lines in the premade draft classes as an offline player. Knowing some of the top players back stories made it feel more real and kept my interest in my franchise mode (was about 6 years deep or so) more then the games do in any games I've played since. I remember a draft with a tight end from Troy (name escapes me) that I was all in on drafting in the late 1st (graded as a midround guy), but he flew up draft boards and went mid first round. He ended up being a pro bowler as a rookie. Another class (may have been same one, it was 11 years ago) had a QB named Austin Duncan. Rated at a 4th rounder or something like that. I scouted him and thought I struck gold with the next Tom Brady, but he too flew up draft boards. I tried to trade up for him, but the cost was too much especially since I ran a run first offense. One guy named Akia Green was the "next Steve Smith" and was a projected third rounder. I reached in the first round for him and he won rookie of the year breaking Randy Moss single season TD record. I finally got my QB in the bottom of the first round one year named Steve Hardin and he ended up being really awesome. He was only 20 years old too. I know they made them random in future games due to all the guides people made ruining online franchises, but I wish they would still put this kind of effort into the draft storylines even if it means they can made into guides. They can already do it with the community downloadable draft classes.
I was in an online league with 32 users and those drafts were insane. We would all be online for the draft trading picks and players it was crazy. I drafted a MLB named Kenneth Crenshaw with 95spd and 88acc I was able to break the int record with doing all user picks vs other users. I drafted a RB who was a CJ2k clone Crishon Swift with 98spd. The storylines for these drafts brought the online league to life and these players seemed to have real personalities as seasons went by since each team was user controlled. I think we did like 20 seasons before users started to fall out. I'll never forget that league.
I remember falling into the trap and spending about $50 trying to get some legends in MUT. This was when they released those Leon Sandcastle cards around the time of the 2013 combine. Had like 13 100-overall stats. Speed, Tackle, Hit power, you name it. They also released like 8 versions of him at different positions (WR, QB, HB, etc.) Absolutely broken 🤣
It was a joke from that time draft's broadcast network that deion sanders was coming back to the NFL as the #1 draft pick but with a difrerent name, and he eventualy would be the best at every position. One year later they made the same joke but with jerry rice coming back. Maby they will do it again with andrew luck, we all are hyped for him coming back after all.
You had it EASY my friend... Madden 13 Marked the year that I bought my ps4 and had gotten rid of my ps2 and ps3... WORST MISTAKE OF MY GAMING LIFE. For a time, Madden 13 was my only game and for about a year, I did not even touch my PlayStation, I nearly quit gaming altogether because of this ONE GAME. It is odd to say but this game vastly changed and nearly ruined my outlook on gaming. I wouldn't get this upset at or about a game ever again up until I played Dark Souls for the first time. lmao and even then, Dark Souls never made me contemplate quitting gaming completely.
We've lost TWO CONSOLE generations to mediocre/ awful Madden games. All we as fans want is Madden 07 updated with 4K graphics and current rosters. Hell, I will LITERALLY take Madden 07 PORTED to the Nintendo Switch! I don't even need updated graphics on the Switch, just update the rosters and let me enjoy FRANCHISE MODE.
I agree. I wish Madden was on Switch. (I would buy it if it was) But the last time it was on any Nintendo console was with this one (it was on the Wii U (that version was very buggy - it was basically this but without MUT) and the original Wii (where it was actually good))
@@UltiMaker2the funny thing is that the WIIU is the 360/PS3 version but the gamepad actually had some nice features like the ability to basically create a play
This video was absolutely perfect in timing I just got madden 12 and was absolutely blown away with nostalgia. As well as all the features back from the old maddens and just the in depth tutorial of everything they added to franchise mode as soon as you start a new franchise. It’s so sad to see where the series has gone too but in the meantime my happy a** will be on my 360 playing madden 12. Great video keep up the grind
Lmao that’s why I still play madden 12. I enjoy it because of how well the game plays and it’s the last great madden game. I mean I grew up playing madden 12 my whole life really I only played madden 13 a little bit because of the couple of things they introduced like new commentators and the new Nike uniforms were nice but that game will never compare too madden 12. Right now I’m even working on updated roster for madden 12 because of how much I love the game. It takes a lot of time but the game is worthy of putting in that much time. The game is just still so amazing and I even see animations that I’ve never seen before. Like I remember I was playing with Adrian Peterson and he got grabbed by the foot by a defender and was like hop stepping to try and fight for yards before the gang tackle came and brought him down. Things like that keep me playing.
Madden 12’s gameplay is so vastly inferior to 13 and 25th that I sold the game the same day I bought it. Defensive tackles making leaping, no-look, one-handed interceptions right at the line is an instant NO.
@@DarranKern that may be the case but it lacks in every single other feature when it comes to franchise mode, I’ll take decent gameplay with in depth options over a bland franchise with good gameplay. Not saying you’re wrong just my preference
@@Jsizzle21k gameplay is my main focus. The only madden games I own and play currently are ‘08, ‘10, and 25th Anniversary. I actually enjoy 25th a lot, and the others are fun. 13 has a bad UI and stripped features, but the gameplay is pretty balanced. So defense cheats like superhumans on ‘12 and on ‘16 the rungame of a decent team is almost unstoppable on All Madden. Im just looking for balance. 25th is the only modernish Madden with acceptable gameplay and minimal bugs. It has problems, however. The refs flag almost NOTHING on 25th. Pass interference is a call I have seen ONCE in a few hundred hours of gaming
I wanted to say that the introduction made me so happy because you mentioned how good my two favorite Maddens (07 and 10) were in their franchises. And especially about 07's Franchise mode was the best in the series. I miss when EA wasn't the worst/scummy game devs.
Glad this dropped into my recs. You earned a new sub. This is analysis I’ve seen before, but I’ve never seen it done as concisely. Great script and editing are very much on display. Can’t wait to check the back catalogue.
I remember how boring madden 13s Home Screen was. I should’ve known it would be bad but i was only 12 years old. Looking back now, man that was a bad game. Truly the beginning of the end.
I never got in the Connected Career deal, as I found the whole thing to be terribly confusing when it didn't have to be that way; I say the developers of the Madden franchise should've stuck with all the features already in place and give the gamer a choice if they wanted to connect a career or not.
I would like to see this, big NHL fan myself but I think the games depth has gone backwards but truthfully the gameplay is the best gameplay we’ve seen yet. If 2k was allowed to keep making NHl/NFL games I think EA would have had some serious competition.
Gameplay good, presentation bad, soundtrack garbage, menus atrocious, game modes like HUT, Ones, and 3s Elimination replaced GM connected and other tournaments. Removed winter classic, brawls, page up/down button, test on ice, and more. No unlockables, same Stanley Cup celi hasn’t changed in 3 years, and don’t get me started on 21s Be a pro.
I used to LOVE making a safety in career mode. I remember getting Madden 13 and being completely dumbfounded that the camera was facing you and you couldn't change it. It was such a simple and easily fixable thing and it ruined the entire mode.
I mean, as a lions fan, Calvin Johnson is really only ever known for fumbling and dropping passes in key moments, and then retiring and talking shit about the lions. In reality he was only ever good enough to make plays when the game was already over. Tbh I think it's fitting he's on the cover.
We appreciate you being the voice of so many frustrated football fans who just want a solid nfl video game. Your platform is the trailblazer for change. We need you, we appreciate you, so please don’t ever stop fighting the good fight!
You 100% hit it perfectly. I have played Madden since the original '92 release. I have vivid memories of playing Madden for hours with my friends. Some of the best times I had in high school. I kept playing on the computer in the 2000s. 2008 rocked. Best Madden ever. Without a doubt. I finally bought a PS4 in 2016 and I was expecting something amazing when I bought my very first game. Madden 2016. I couldn't believe how worthless the game was. I played one week and didn't play again until I bought the FIFA/Madden combo for about $12. Madden 19 was even worse. I pre-ordered 22 thinking that next gen should have some amazing new things. I can't believe how far down the Madden series has gone. I hope that 2K is able to do something with their NFL license.
Thanks for making this video. I remember the old ESPN 2k football games and how you could upload your own music for stadium music lol. Also, I've always hated MUT and prefer the historic teams.
The NFL, or rather the NFL Alumni Association, put the kibosh on the historic teams, as retired players aren't under the NFLPA. As always, it boils down to money, as everything does.
I still occasionally play madden 18 (I only buy sport games every 3 years) and while playing my franchise for the Broncos were I’m 3 seasons in I had two thoughts.. 1. I’m three seasons in play as the DENVER Broncos and I have yet to play in the snow 2. Why the heck can’t I change the weather? Heck in MLB the show 17 you can make it rain if you want Just my little rant that goes to show one of many things wrong with Madden
i brought madden nfl 17 for just a dollar i got to admit that game is fun but it has no depth and the servers are off but i enjoy playing franchise mode
I liked how many relocation cities you could pick in the old maddens, now all the relocation cities are limited to realistic options that are talked about in real life, if I wanna move my team to Alaska and have snowy games all season I should be able to
if you have a monopoly, you don’t have to improve your product, you don’t have to keep it as good, you don’t have to make sure it doesn’t get too bad, because of how quality creativity requires money, EA has to make it worse by way of random change in order to say they’re trying. profit and creative quality will always ultimately stop mixing.
Madden13 on Wii U is a hidden gem! You can draw your own plays and the graphics are pretty good. Wish they could have built upon them but it was the only one released on Wii U
The move to Frostbite engine was the final nail in the Madden coffin. At least before that, they had decent gameplay, although a massive lack of features. But since Madden 18 it has been a buggy mess is animation simulator, and they seem to put more effort into hyping the game up than actually making the game playable
I remember my first time playing 13 and being pissed at how pre-snap adjustments were essentially non existent because it simply took too long. There was just less freedom. It was a totally different game and one I never took to.
I liked Ian Cummings. He seemed like he was really trying to do whatever he could to please the fans. Unfortunately most of the decisions were out of his hands. I remember one time he was directly communicating with us fans and I remember one question youd love that asked. He asked if we prefered more physics based on pre-canned animations.
Can I just say that the production values on your videos are great. You could be covering the price of tea in China and I have a feeling you'd be able to make it interesting.
Can you do NASCAR Dirt to Daytona retrospective? I saw a while back you planned on doing it before you changed your mind. I love that game! P.S. Good job on this retrospective!
I literally hadnt played madden for a few years and 13 was my first game back since 07 and boy when i booted it up and saw how much was gone from the game it was a total disappointment and its been downhill ever since
Madden 13 was the first madden I played, and my first reaction was defensive because I thought it was great. Watching this, I realize how much I missed out on. I haven’t played madden since madden 25
This game was absolutely the turning point in the series. I remember buying this game and playing it once. I made a career mode and then played. I literally was like wtf happened to this game
Finally someone said it and I truly say this from the bottom of my heart, Thank you ♥️.. This is the reason why I still own a PS2 till this day. I miss the original Madden 😢
This is a terrific video and it’s so true that we didn’t realize what Madden 13 truly was. I was blind to how far Madden was truly falling until Madden 18 where it finally fell apart and I couldn’t keep playing it anymore due to how far the gameplay and Franchise standards fell. I can’t wait until the next full rebuild because I can’t see how Madden can get any lower than the current 18-21 standard (or I hope at least).
@@supergj7428 in madden? Yeah, they're slipping. But think of it, if you set the bar as low as you can, the minute you reintroduce simple things people praise you for it and sales skyrocket. It's unfortunate but it's not the worst idea I've heard come from EA, so I wouldn't put it past them
If you ever decide to walk away from Sports videos entirely and you need a Magnum Opus to send them off with a bang, might I suggest you concoct a 'Dream Game'? Mix and match the very best components from essentially every Football Game out there- not just the EA Refuse of Mediocrity but also the competitors. Best gameplay components, best off-field 'modes', all the bells and whistles that you've loved over the years... just a bucket list of things that you experienced from the games that did them the best(or, if so inclined, things that none of them could satisfy you with but you've got ideas of your own).
My favorite was madden 07, I played it so much. In madden 2010 There was one thing I liked in superstar mode which was having first person view mode, playing linebacker while staring out the helmet was tough but super fun and engrossing, as soon as they took that away I stopped playing.
I know this is old but this is seriously well made, I myself wasn't really a sports game person but Madden 13 was my first and last madden and I had no idea of the real greatness of the games that came before. I feel sorry for those who continued down the path of buying the game every year
man I spent sooooo many hours in madden 12... when 13 came out; It was so bad.. my friends and I all carried on with 12 and hoped for 14.. but 14 was 13 with a patch and new rosters lol. Connected careers was a gut punch I was like noo... what is this... I didn't buy a madden until 23 and have been enjoying it
I am one of the few that purchased this on the WiiU, that was the best place to buy this. The second screen acted as a playbook and also allowed the player to literally draw their own plays during the game and call audibles. I loved Madden 03, 05 and 08, but this feature still made 13 my favorite one to play.
'13 was horrendous. Also '12 is definitely one of the best Maddens of the past 10-12 years or so, but it was super glitchy. That was the biggest issue I had with it. Shit could pop out of nowhere and ruin your whole franchise.
I remember getting this game as a Christmas present alongside a PS3 console and I have never hated a game more in my life. The gameplay felt terrible to me and players would just stumble into each other between plays
I actually think Madden 13 was the last GREAT Madden game. I had so much fun with it because it was more focused on actually PLAYING the game. Also, a lot of the stuff you claim wasn't in the game here is actually wrong.
