From my vantage point, this rivalry sort of “rose to the top” at a time where there was a vacuum in the NFL. No more 49ers, Cowboys, Packers, Broncos running roughshod. Some parity at the turn of the century… Baltimore, Tennessee, Indy, New England, Jacksonville, St. Louis, Philly, Tampa were all finding success. These two teams (after this game) had a Vice grip on the league for a while. Also, interesting to see this in high def.

I remember that McGinest play so clearly! I didn't remember any of the rest of this game, but I remember Willie McGinest running right to Edgerrin James and keeping him out of the end zone to save the game! 🙂 It's kinda/sorta like the Malcom Butler interception. Both plays saved wins for the Pats that looked for all the world that they would lose. But they were also significant beyond just the game they helped to seal. But, of course, since Butlers play sealed a Super Bowl, so that play gets way more coverage and is remembered way more.

Did you know the Colts were responsible for 2 league rules to change thanks to their games against the Patriots in this game and 2004 AFC Division Game After this game both Peyton Manning and Tony Dungy went to the league and felt the Patriots fake their injuries to slow down their momentum and use the strategy that if Indy scored they would have time on the clock this led to that if a team had an injured player under two minutes they had to burn a time out and if an opponent had no timeouts and use players to fake injury it would be a 10 sec run off with a 15 yard unsportsmanlike. In the 2004 Division Round The Colts lost to the Patriots 20-3. Dungy and the Colts organization came to the league and stated that the Patriots would jam the Colts Receivers for 10 yards and they felt 10 yards of jamming a WR gave WR no chance to get open this led to the current rule that is known as the Dungy Rule "a Corner Back or Safety or any defender covering a WR only has 5 yards to press a receiver after 5 yards defenders must not press or hold any WR this could lead to either a 10 yard holding penaly or a spot foul pass interference"

These football coaches get praised for doing absolutely nothing other than working their way up the ranks and making connections to get into their positions. There isn’t really a Revolutionary coach to speak of. So it just comes down to who can recruit + get the most out of their players with the existing schemes. Didn't the New England Patriots go 14-2 and the Indianapolis Collts go 12-4 in the NFL 2003 season?I don't know how people thought that the Colts were going to smoke the Patriots in the AFC championship game. 🤦‍♂️. Patriots were the best team in the 2003 season.Manning and the Colts finally beat Brady and the Patriots in the 2006 season.Imagine that and imagine the wait. 2003 Colts lost to Patriots AFC championship 2004 Colts lost to Patriots AFC divisional playoff 2005 Colts lost to Steelers AFC divisional playoff 2006 Colts finally beat the Patriots AFC championship 🤦‍♂️ I hate Tom Brady 😂

Colts used only 2 personnel groups the entire game and were still explosive on offense. They needed to use heavy personnel on the goaline and pound the football into the end zone. Too much finesse.
@yeomane

That was a common criticism of the Colts in that era on both offense and defense. Finesse team, goes up against physical NE, gets crushed.

@@MichaelMurphy-kj3xf That's because of Manning's quick release and great decisions. We understand that sacks are just as much about the QB as they are about the OL. Manning's line wasn't great, but Manning is the greatest QB of all time along with Dan Marino at avoiding sacks.
