Urlacher was the Defensive Player of the Year that season. He was absolutely dominate. Bettis was in his final season and way past his prime. That made the moment he ran over Urlacher that much more amazing.

The S.O. and I had tickets to this game, but unfortunately woke up with the flu or something that morning and gave our tickets to some friends at the last minute. We forced ourselves onto the couch underneath about 5 blankets. I cannot speak for her, but I didn't watch the game more so experienced it as a fever dream that I hallucinated in my head as I faded in and out of consciousness. Bettis, Bettis, Bettis was repeating in my head as I felt I was moving towards madness with a 103 temperature. The next day and on the mend I finally watched the game properly and I had imagined the game very differently and the real game was much better than what I had imagined and thankfully Bettis didn't look like a snowplow.

People who believe the "Willie Parker was fast but went down easy and couldn't break any tackles" meme as serious, accurate analysis need to watch the first half of this game. Sure, he wasn't the Bus, but there's only one Jerome Bettis. You had to come correct with Parker, and if you didn't wrap up and drive or take his legs, he'd beat you. He bounced off guys who just tried to hit him high and knock him down. He'd run through arm tackles. Not a power back, but not a soft player either.

I used to travel from outside of Philly to Pittsburgh to go to one Steelers game every season (up until a couple seasons ago). I feel like I’ve probably seen more losses than wins, or close to .500 at least, but the ones I went to were always epic, this game included. I didn’t realize how iconic that play would be but I remember how awesome it was to experience that game, especially with how the weather quickly transitioned into snow. I also happened to be at the snowy playoff game against the chargers when LT played for them, and the two games where the punts (one may have been a kickoff) stopped immediately when impacting the ground on very rainy/muddy games, one being against the Dolphins, and the other was against the Bengals. I can continue the tradition of expressing how the games just aren’t the same as they used to be, but is anything ever?🤪

The offensive line was on point this game. They were playing on another level against a very good defense. I remember this game well. ETA- For some reason Urlacher really had a poor game. He failed to close the distance on so many crucial plays, it seemed like he was shell shocked. That's not typical of him. He's a heat seeking missile at any other game. Dunno what was going on with him on this day.
@JonPITBZN
@JonPITBZN 4 года назад
The Steelers backfield gave a lot of tacklers problems that year. Probably because you need to use three very different tackling techniques to get them on the ground. With Bettis you had to come screaming in as fast as you could and go for his legs, because otherwise he wouldn't go down. With Parker, you had to come in with some momentum and a perfect angle, and either take his legs or wrap up and run through him. He ran through weak arm tackles, bounced off hits, and ran around anyone who stopped to "break down" for a form tackle. But then there was Verron Haynes, who you needed to break down and form tackle. Guys had to think about who they were tackling, and nothing good happens when you think.
