The way you split your gaming between your full PC setup and your Deck makes a lot of sense. Think I'm gonna do the same (have an Ally X). Great vid! Long live handheld gaming
Back in the early 90s, I have always been obsessed with a TV that fits inside your pocket. Inside my head was, this TV would be able to play TV channels so I could watch cartoons all day. Fast forward to 2020s and here we are. I guess my childhood dream came true. Not exactly a TV but we're way past TVs now.
Yea I remember sending old blurry videos between phones with infrared, then Bluetooth came out and it was amazing to send videos without having to be so close. I was like imagine if you could just watch unlimited videos on your phone without sending stuff to each other, that would be cool.
The best thing that makes the Steam Deck so amazing is the awesome trackpads. I've used probably about 90% of consoles, played on laptops, and currently play on my PC so switching back forth (with gyro too!) makes it so convenient to play. The OLEDs also get a startling amount of battery life over the other handhelds lol. Legion Gos and Allys have great performance (at 2x cost) but absolutely struggle without their power cords. Steam Deck can emulate half of the games for like 3x longer due to all of the efficiency upgrades. It's genuinely the most impressive console I've ever seen. To have my entire steam library on the Deck is stellar, and I can effectively emulate anything I want (and high end stuff can be streamed from my PC lmao.)
Yea I feel like they didn't do enough marketing for the OLED, I thought the upgrade was just the screen but they added a lot more quality of life improvements! Thanks for watching 😁
The Ally X destroys the steamdeck in longer battery life with higher performance. And its 900 steamdeck oled is 600 or 700, so not a big difference, def not double
It's honestly an Amazing device! I'm a 64GB version owner myself and I absolutely love it as a "companion device". I played main missions in Cyberpunk on my gaming PC soaking in the impressive story, audiovisuals and atmosphere, and then I do a lot of the smaller gigs on the Steam Deck. It wouldn't matter if the Steam Deck had 4x the performance, I would still prefer to play it on the big screen with my hi-fi setup. So performance is REALLY no issue for me. However, games these days are filled to the brim with great content that I honestly never find time to play. Many times I just need an easier, more accessible and comfortable way to do it, and that's where the Steam Deck comes in. I have been ploughing through games like never before since I got the Steam Deck This summer I have played Stardew Valley, Super Mario Sunshine (to completion, the perfect summer game) as well as tons of old DOS games, like "Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis". It has been brilliant to run on the Steam Deck. Not to mention that DOS games scale up perfectly to 1280x800 with 4x integer scale, making them look absolutely gorgeous, filling up the whole screen as well! :)
A companion device is a great way to describe it, it definately helps with bigger games like cyberpunk. Also my girlfriend has modded startew valley on her deck which is quite cool and it runs great, she changed the whole visual style of the game
You pretty much covered exactly how I feel. I was a kid who wasn't always home due to family stuff, so I always had a handheld on me like a GBA, with the SP being my favorite at the time. I also had a PS2 and N64 at home and all I ever wanted was to play those games on the go. When the PSP came out I was so excited, even though it felt like a bit of a compromise with only one thumbstick. Flash forward to the Switch, and it became my all time favorite console strictly because of the versatility, but also because I loved the generation of games Nintendo put out for it. About a year and a half ago I picked up a Steam Deck LCD because it seemed like something I'd enjoy, and damn did I enjoy it. It easily took the place of my favorite console of all time, even beyond my more powerful PC, because of the portability. When the OLED came out, I bought one for my gf for Christmas and while I was setting it up, I decided it was a worthwhile investment to sell my LCD and upgrade. Easily the best decision I've ever made, I highly recommend it. The LCD is still amazing, but the OLED is on another level, or at the very least brings some very solid quality of life improvements. I'm really looking forward to whatever the next iteration of the SD is whenever Valve decides it's the right time to make it, but I'd rather them take their time like they said to make sure the tech is a good enough jump in the future. Anyway, solid video! You gained a sub.
My steam.deck is the ultimate backlog killer. I mostly play old games on it, like Fallout 3, and Sleeping Dogs, but I'd never play these games otherwise. I also have the 64gb LCD and a big micro sd. I love it, but i hate the lack of shader cache management. My storage is almost full, despite only having 2 small games installed on my micro sd, not the main drive.
Sleeping dogs is such a cool game, I want to play it again at some point. Also I am using a cryoutility tool which moves all the shader caches to the sd card so the 64gb does get full from it. Its pretty handy! Thanks for watching 😀
exactly the angle i was looking for, especially after owning a 2-in-1 laptop w eGPU. That's already a Windows device that I tinker with, SteamOS would compliment that perfectly
Thanks for subscribing, glad you liked the video! Lol yea it's the price tag that puts me off, I'm not sure it will give me enough of an upgrade considering the LCD can do most of what the OLED can do. One day I will cave thoguh I'm sure lol
I just started looking at Anbernic products after reading this. Never heard of them before. The rg40xx h and v look so cool, being able to emulate all that stuff on something that small. and I'm a sucker for the RGB jotsticks too
@@SpaceyJace yeah, there's a whole bunch of retro handhelds to choose from..I also got the translucent blue Anbernic RG 556, which has an AMOLED screen, and can emulate games up to PS2. For under $200, it's a pretty sweet device
Steamdeck is a really cool device. But it’s too big and bulky for me, I can’t really see it as handheld, it’s closer to a labtop than a handheld for me. However, it’s awesome that people are really enjoying it.
Awesome video and editing! Was fun watching. Also you have interesting approach - play on PC first, then on downtime you can play it in worse quality but in more comfortable position with Steam Deck. I like choosing a device for a game and stick to it for that game. I have a lot of gaming devices and love gaming in general. It is amazing how far handheld gaming come. But it always was, is, and will be several steps down compared to stationary device (PC\console). Currently even low\med settings are quite beautiful and in my opinion the only thing holding graphics down is resolution. Typical setup of steam deck 800p is a little low resolution-wise, however it becomes worse in modern games, where it is even lower than that. There are no drastically more powerful handheld devices than steam deck. Also they all big and bulky. What I prefer - cloud gaming. Wait wait wait, hear me out! I meant local streaming from my PC. Currently I use the Logitech G Cloud for it and I like it more than a steam deck. First of all, local streaming works flawlessly if set up correctly. Lag is unnoticeable even for hardcore games (about 30-40 ms), picture quality is good and stable. It has 1080p screen with better colors than steam deck LCD. It is 40% lighter while having same screen and ergonomic controls. And it allows you to play 10+ hours from a battery, with highest settings possible (if your PC allows). Yeah Steam Deck is king in terms of controls. It gives you more console-like experience and simpler to use. But local streaming is my go-to way of playing PC games. It allowed author both play with beautiful graphics, and where he would like at home
Yea tbh if I'm mainly playing in my house and just transitioning between PC and deck then maybe it would better to focus on that use case and get a dedicated streaming device, my Internet is good enough to stream well on the deck so would be a good idea 💡 thanks for watching 😀
@@SpaceyJace Currently, I’m using the SD OLED, and the upgrade was worth it. With the AR glasses, it's more about the ergonomics. Since you are literally wearing the screen attached to your face, you can lie down on your bed without neck pain or cramped hands.
@angeldeschain0 Yea I wonder if at that point it would be good to just have the deck on a bedside table or something and have a wireless controller connected so your just using the glasses and a controller while in bed or the sofa, that would be crazy tbh 😃
@@SpaceyJace I think you are gonna like it. It’s the virtual boy I never got to afford as a 10 year old boy. Although keep in mind it takes 5 to 10 minutes every single time to get used to it. At the beginning it feels off, hard to put into words.
@@SpaceyJacesame thing haplend to me with Axiom Verge. I remember hearing they were making a second one and then someone was talking about it as if it was already out and when I went to look the store page was like over a year old WTF.
I have only used the epic game store for like two games that I don't even play anymore and the same thing goes with origin and all the other launchers. I mostly just play steam games and emulate console games so it's perfect for me for that reason. Also I have a desktop but it is actually less powerful than the steam deck because of how old it is lmao. Like I'm still rocking the GTX 770. I'm not in a good place financially or otherwise to build a new pc so I'm getting this for the portability and also just the raw power and versatility
Yea I rarely feel the need to use Epic, I just have loads of free games that I've hoarded over the years that would be good to eventually play lol damm a 770 is ancient 😄
@@SpaceyJace yeahhhhhh I'm also still using HDDs and 8 gigs ddr3 ram too 😅 What I'm going to do is get a capture card so I can play on steam deck and stream on my(or a ) computer. At this point it's like. Eh, it's been like this ever since ddr4 came out. I haven't wanted to upgrade because upgrading means upgrading everything unless the only thing I want to touch is storage(which I did do, couple of years ago I added 4 terabytes) I upgrade GPU, I get bottlenecked, upgrade CPU, ram bottleneck, upgrade ram, have to upgrade motherboard since it's not compatible with ddr4 or 5. So I just left it alone since I was poor anyway and here I am😅
Using my Deck as a PC as it does not throw out nearly as much heat as the PC in a west facing room with the summer sun beating down on the room (oh the irony of saying that when you live in the UK) Imagine how disheartened I was when I purchased my 64GB LCD Steam Deck and just over two weeks later the OLED model came out lol, they kinda dropped that bombshell unannounced. I probably could have got it replaced for an OLED model or some sort of voucher for my steam account but meh, The LCD model is fine and I put a 1TB NVMe in it anyway and more recently a 1.5TB Micro SD card for Emulation.
Looked into it. And you got the right one. PWM is a big problem on the oled. I'm going to buy a refurbished lcd deck In october and hold on for the the next wave. Switch 2 is coming and legion go lite is coming very soon. And in 2027 new deck playstation and xbox portable are coming out.
@@SpaceyJace It was disappointing at the time but honestly that faded fairly quickly given how versatile The Deck is. Certainly helps make 5 hours in Edinburgh hospital car park disappear while the missus has her Dialysis lol
I've always wanted to try one of those but can't justify buying one while owning a steam deck lol I'm a sucker for the RGB they added around the joysticks
@@SpaceyJace not taking nothing away from the awesome Steamdeck they started this whole thing . Just wanted to play destiny and COD franchise plus have a PC gamepass so it’s just easier for me to own the ROG plus can’t wait to sale and get ROG X LOL
@jcru40 yea its annoying not being able to access all the stores easily on the deck, would be handy to have windows just running smoothly out the box. I saw a video on the ally X recently and I am really tempted 😆
@@SpaceyJace You can also put the steam os very easily with bazzite and dual boot windows and steam os so you have the better screen of the ally and the better sound and the better performance of the ally.(sorry for bad english)
Steamdeck is nice but it's barely 'handheld' to me. Hope the next one they'll have small size, and for that regular size they should have the battery size of Rog Ally X - fcking 80wh and it's still slightly smaller than a Steamdeck
Yea I guess thats the next step, basically having the same power and versatility of the steam deck but in a smaller form factor. Not sure if they'd be able to keep the £350 price point though but you never know, thanks for watching!
"It gives you ultimate power" ... and it's so fucking huge and embarrassing that you'd never take it out in public so you might as well just play on your PC at home.
That was the Skyrim Nolvus modpack streaming from my PC. I have another video on ultra modded skyrim if you want to know more about it! Thanks for watching 😀
I love the Steam Deck, but I don´t consider it a handheld. Sure, I love that I can play it handheld for brief periods, but its just too big and heavy. I seldom bring it with me unless I´m going to a place with a screen to plug it in.
The Steamdeck is too large, to be a great portable device. I mainly use it as a HTPC these days. Also it's quite weak with its 720p focus, dock it to a tv or even a monitor and you're greeted with very ugly image quality and thanks to the low amount of ram even 1080p resolution can become problematic. The 16GB RAM for the GPU+CPU just doesn't cut it really, they should have gone with 32GB instead, then perhaps performance would be better and you wouldn't need to play PC games at the lowest possible setting.
Okay, i gotta step in here: "Granting you access to the latest PC Games like Red Dead 2 and Elden Ring" ... "It's like a portal into the PC gaming world for console gamers" ... erm, those are both console games...
