I’ve just bought garden wire and turn buckles but I have to drill into concrete posts . Wish I had wooden fence posts . ❤ love your lattice and clematis.

Hi Ken, have lots of Group 2 and Group 3 clematis but think I might have a go at Macropetalas after watching this. Have you done a video yet on the practicalities of planting the different types of clematis - eg. the best soil type, optimal planting depth for the different types, the wiring systems you use (I gather clinging clematis need fine wires, won't cling to thick trellis?), how you then them in (if I try to direct young stems on mine too much they just did back), what to do when they reach the top of a fence or frame, how and when to feed, etc. Also a video about right plant for right place - eg. I planted a very vigorous C. Anoushka to grow through a smallish Viburnum Plicatum and it just swamped it. idea was goid, but I should have chosen a delicate, well behaved clematis. Do you tend to think Group 2 or Group 3 are better for training through other plants like roses, given the pruning regimes for each? I'd love to watch more videos covering these aspects of clematis cultivation. Thanks

Hi Lauri, some of the information you seek is in other of my videos but I will be doing one soon on planting and the slightly different needs of certain groups of clematis. In respect of training, as you see from my garden some of mine grow up wooden trellis and I just keep folding new growths in where I want them to grow. Growing up wires is easier but I don’t like ugly structures and some that I have seen with wires are not very attractive. In respect of clematis to go with roses , in the UK large flowered clematis tend to be in flower at the same time as the roses and I like to have a succession of flower, so I use viticellas.Alionushka is a great plant but does need a robust host as you have found out!

There is now a chart on my website kenblackclematis.com that gives planting information on the various groups of clematis

Enjoying the videos Ken. Can you recommend me a hardy clematis for an exposed position? Thank you

Wind is one of the worst enemies for clematis, so it depends how exposed a site it is. In general, the toughest ones are the viticellas which flower, depending on the variety, between July and October. Check out Clematis on the Web to find one that might be good for you
