I see some people commenting before seeing the video saying that "Oda can just make Gear 5th serious and dramatic". The point of this discussion is that this is something we have not yet seen done effectively in the same manner as past fights, as Gear 5th is inherently incongruent with that style of writing. just want to say this is the biggest question that worries me since the kaido fight. Im really looking forward to watching this tyy. Edit: Commenting on the actual video, I still want to see luffy getting more serious in fights with big names. I feel like gear 5 puts those enemies in a situation where they cant help but look goofy against luffys abilites, and thats a disservice to them as characters. I dont want to see big faces turned into laughing stock.
On the point where luffy stated he'd continue gear 5. Look at his face when he names people to motivate himself. Momo Tama And out of no where Pedro... Luffy lingers on the name of a dead man. And he's in gear 5. Still smiling but with the words of a deadman on his lips, the smile momentarily appears darker. Almost like it's hiding a great rage. Because it is. Gear 5 seems to apply a laughing debuff to luffy that, being who he is. Luffy embraces. But he's still luffy under it. Yes his combat is more comedic, but to say there's no seriousness at all is refusing to look beyond surface level
The Gear 5th dilemma really only concerns Akainu - an inevitable matchup that would require a tense and serious tone. We all knew that Blackbeard had the power to negate G5. Kinda disappointing that you glossed over Akainu
I feel like the Foxy fight is the ultimate refutation of the idea that Luffy’s fights were always just goofy and we don’t need to worry about drama. The Davy Back Fight was easily the goofiest arc, the goofiest premise, and the goofiest enemy Luffy has ever faced. But yet, by the ending exchange of that fight Luffy is deathly serious about winning.
That’s exactly why I didn’t like that fight. I just can’t accept that luffy would struggle as much like with crocodile for that fight with such a non-threatening character. The juxtaposition doesn’t work for me in that regard, it felt like oda had to much of his hand on the scale in that regard. Davyback was entertaining but talking foxy seriously was tedious.
@@tavoiradio7667 It’s not that the fight was necessarily that difficult for Luffy. It’s about the stakes of the fight. If Luffy lost then he loses a member of his crew. As far as Luffy is concerned even a weak enemy should be taken seriously if one of his friends is on the line. Also the seriousness of the Foxy fight has the important effect of reminding us just how far Luffy will go for his friends, right before throwing the reader into the W7/EL saga where the bonds of the crew would be tested more than ever before.

Foxy arc is constantly rated among the worst precisely because most of it was goofing around. The ending being serious couldn't fix that. You literally went to one of the worst arcs to justify. The panel where Luffy grabs the lighting bolt is a good example of how Gear 5 can still look menacing, eventhough Luffy is smiling and being creative. Gear 5 offers a lot of flexibility, so I'm not too worried Oda is unable to convey a darker tone during the more serious moments. In fact, I think that smiling during moments of dispare is exactly the philosophical point behind Gear 5, it's not a contradiction to seriousness. Smiling doensn't mean Luffy is unconcerned, it just means he'll use spark of joy to fuel his attacks when everyone else has lost hope
@@justaway6901 Right, but I'm arguing that the idea that a serious tone can only occur when Luffy's demeanour is no longer silly, may be bit outdated. I think joy, hope and love will be essential for Luffy to overcome the most dire situations where all hope is lost (i.e. the moments when the tone is most dark and serious). It's similar to how (morbid) humor can help people cope when they deal with a lot of death and dispare (happens a lot with doctors/soldiers). When Blackbeard darkens the sky, Luffy won't defeat him with rage and hate, he instead will shine as bright as the sun with his laughter and joy. At least, that's how I imagine it lol
Akainu is the only fight I feel is inevitable in some capacity that you didn’t touch on. Luffy absolutely has built up animosity against him, and it’s an area where Oda will need to worry about the tonal interplay.
That fight might not happen tho, I kinda feel like sabo is going to be the one taking on akainu. Since when akainu fought ace he said that magma is hotter than flames, it’ll be a fitting vendetta for sabo to avenge ace, as he is the flame emperor and nothing is hotter than the flame emperor’s fire.
@@marri991 Yeah, it might happen that Luffy is heading towards the Gorousei or Im and Akainu stands in his way, but then Sabo takes the fight away as Luffy has bigger fish to fry and they both technically have the same vendetta against Akainu. I think Luffy vs Akainu is 50/50, not a guaranteed fight at all.

I think the seriousness in the final blow against Kaido is likely a way of showing that when it comes down to it and it’s important, he can overcome the will of Nika and get serious

Honestly the scene where Luffy is crying after Axe’s death is one of the worst supposed ‘tragic’ scenes I’ve ever seen in manga-probably the worst tbh. Oda is terrible at moderating tone. Terrible.

Easy solution let's see how it's implemented in combat more. It's literally only been showcased twice. The literal first showcase with Kaido and a admittedly one sided fight against Lucci where Luffy was clearly not trying that hard. I'd say G5 is going to be the go to transformation for the more ridiculous feats of strength the endgame adversaries will be pulling up that Luffy will have to contend. The cartoonish abilities can lead to feats and creative applications we'd normally think Luffy couldn't pull off naturally without Awakening.

I'm surprised you didn't bring up Akainu as a particularly emotional confrontation for Luffy. He is, after all, the antagonist that kills Luffy's brother right in front of him, inflicting severe emotional and physical trauma. Even if Luffy is not going to land the final hit, not having them face off would be a huge missed opportunity.
Luffy will definitely face Akainu at some point, but I feel people should at least start considering the possibility that he's not going to be the one to have a full fight with him and take him down, and that that role, may go to Sabo.

The idea of Luffy normally being a happy, carefree guy but being the complete opposite during serious moments being such a standout follows the same logic as why moments where a character goes "Berserk" are so popular, like Naruto using the Nine-Tails Chakra for the first time or Ichigo as Vasto Lord, etc... The extreme contrast helps to intensify the seriousness and meaning of the scene.
True but we gotten so many of those moments where it becomes a typical shonen troupe while G5 is changing the troupe by reinforcing the character of Luffy instead of changing him.

There nothing wrong with a trope im saying that oda is trying to change it up and says himself he'll try his best to incorporate g5 as best he can in his interview with the detective conan author.
Oh wow I just realized that Gear 5 is basically a defective smile fruit as far as the personality goes. From that point of view I think Oda could still make us feel the underlying anger or tragedy even if Luffy is laughing through it or has a smile on his face, because he proved he could do just that through Toko. I wouldn't be surprised if that was intentional that Oda introduced both in the same arc
When Big Mom was eating her cake, the scene was tense despite the musical. It would be cool if Oda could do the same with Luffy vs Akainu where Luffy is laughing while pummeling him. I'm not sure if it would serve the story, but it would be cool if the reader saw Luffy as a scary monster.
I don't think that fits for Luffy. It seems incredibly cruel and sadistic. We can see him as a monster in other ways, but I don't think a hero written like him, specifically, could get along well with this particular idea :s

Luffy turning Akainu into a joke as Akainu fails to break him mentally is perfect imo Luffy is the freest man of the sea, he already got over Ace's death, the scar is healed, and he carries his will, unimpeded, and he trounces Akainu by putting down the rabid dog.
From what we've seen, I think making his opponents elastic when he hits them seems to cause even more damage, as Kaido himself seed to feel a lot of pain from those attacks in particular, and single one made Lucci vomit a lot of blood and black out.

I think Blackbeard having the ability to remove devil fruit powers is setup as to have the final battle between him and Luffy be serious. If that doesn’t happen I think in serious battles, he’ll be more “godly” like turning into a giant and throwing lightning bolts during the Kaido fight.
Oh for sure!! I hypothesize that, just as Luffy has the same dream as Roger that we don't know exactly what it is, that Blackbeard also has a dream like that.
Haven't finished the vid yet, but I think Luffy is going to begin controlling Gear 5. The personality he takes on is that of the Sun God because Zoan fruits have their own personalities. Just imagine if he goes into the Akainu fight, when he's trying to get revenge, while laughing
This issue can be easily solved if Oda decides that G5 can only be used when Luffy doesn't have too much to worry about/is confident in the fight and trying to enter G5 while having strong emotions will just end up in failure.

I think even though we haven't seen it be super serious yet, we kinda have to trust Oda to know how to handle this, which isn't that hard considering he's done it so well for the entire rest of the story that has been able to either use gags to great effect in fights or put them aside when the time is right. I think the fights can still be made serious, we just haven't seen it come out yet.
Exactly. Which is why Oda is a genius. He is going to pull something unexpected and yet it will feel natural at that point. Our observation haki simply can't do the trick. The current battle royal structure speaks volumes. I doubt anyone saw it coming...

Something I love about the Arlong fight is that Luffy didn’t listen to Nami’s backstory, he just picks up the pen and sees her blood on it. Something simple like Arlong is hurting my navigator ended all notion of comedy in the fight. I believe it’ll be the same when it comes to Blackbeard and Akainu
But even if luffy decides to get serious in gear 5th, the way his faces and combat moves have all been shown are clearly meant to be solely goofy. To a point where I don’t see luffy doing his serious glare in a fight in G5. When I saw G5 luffy use kaidos as a jump rope I honestly completely checked out of the fight.
Once BB steps into Luffy's boundaries i am confident the tone will shift and even somebody as carefree as Luffy in that form will start to fold under BB's actions and have some serious moments
Something that was highlighted recently was that Rob Lucci had completely overcome the threat of his zoan awakening's will overcoming his own - which we've seen in the Impel Down Zoans can leave the user pretty vegetative and mindless. With how Luffy behaved during his fight with Kaido and how out of control he seems to be when using Gear 5, I wonder if Luffy lacks that same discipline and control over his devil fruit and if he is yet to impose his will over the joyful state of mind it puts him in.

There is an easy solution to that, enter GEAR 0 (Zero). Like you said, Blackbeard's DF cancels out other DF's power anyway, and I fully expect BB to play dirty against his fight with Luffy and would use some seaprism stone items. With this, imagine Luffy just fighting all out using nothing but Haki and brute strength, hence the name Gear Zero. I like to think Luffy made this Gear purposefully only for BB, bc he is aware of his powers and how his match against Ace turned out. Luffy's final move could be something like brutally squeezing the lifeblood out of BB, literally making him suck himself dry - a taste of his own medicine - only using Conqueror's Haki, bending BB's devil fruit powers to Luffy's own will. Like how Alluka Zoldyk of HxH punishes those who don't payback after he grant their wishes. Also, dont you think it's too convenient that Oda made Luffy start naming gears in Gear 2? Yea we can assume that Gear 1 might just refer to his normal basic gum-gum attacks. So then this even furthers the possibility that if we took out his gum-gum moves and only his Haki stays, that gives us Gear 0. Idk, I just really want to see the Straw hats to get bloody brutal even once considering this is a pirate versus pirate fight.
I would have preferred the Gum Gum no Mi a normal fruit that Luffy utilizes so well to the point of beating a Yonko, instead of it being the "Legendary Fruit" but I can see where oda is going with this and I still think its pretty cool
Yeah, same here. I was basically forced to accept that he's a special character despite basically having an underdog Devil Fruit that he was forced to maximize via sheer training and ingenuity, but then I remembered that he was already part of two prophecies as far back as in Fishman Island (which was reiterated during Oden's flashback). It's something I'll have to wait and see how it plays out.
Finally someone who at least acknowledges this aspect. I’ve been feeling crazy. I loved the idea of a super low tier fruit being used in clever ways to overcome incredibly overpowered characters. I do not at all like the idea of a chosen one with the ultimate god fruit just warping reality to make a joke out of everything.
Oda Ft up on this one, leaving it an a normal fruit that Luffy made strong would be so much better... but NO let us make it a fng God fruit....yeah I am out of this sinking ship. The same thing happened in Naruto, Lee was more deserving to be the protagonist than the double super lineage having an infinite batery cariing Naruto.... And ending this fight against the strongest creature in this GOOFY way made the fight a JOKE....not in a good way.....
One piece is comedic for a few panels every few chapter mostly during arc setups. People who say "one piece fights are comedic" are looking at 3 panels of a few early fights and purposefully ignoring what we spent 30 chapters onto : Deadly serious battle.

Luffys moments where he gets serious/angry like the arlong fight were what made Luffy a special protagonist for me… man I hope that’s not gone for goofy Luffy fights where he’s just playing
If Luffy suddenly became serious in every fight from now on then he might as well be Zoro. Luffy becoming serious about a fight has always been a cue for the audience that things have now taken a serious turn. And I believe Oda will continue to use Luffy in that way. Serious gear 5th Luffy at the end of Wano was the moment we all had to realize that Luffy himself has now realized that it is now time for him to end his fight with Kaido. This is like Saitama doing a serious punch. Despite being able to drag a fight as long as he wants usually when the collateral damage is too much then he will opt to serious mode and end things once and for all.
I think the shift in seriousness at the end of the Kaido fight makes sense since Luffy is still influenced by the soul of Nika who is a silly entitiy but Luffys seriousness comes still through at the end before the final punch. I think (unlike Lucci) Luffy still has not full control over the soul of Nika and because of that he is still laughing and goofing around in G5.
I feel like his seriousness will come back when he gets in control of the fruit as like Vegapunk says about the fruits having their natures influence the user. Right now Luffy doesn't have mastery over it and he doesn't feel the need to take the helm as much. I feel like he will get very serious when a stronger opponent pushes him.
I feel like we might not have Luffy learn the true nature of his devil fruit for a bit still, thus he believes he is limited to only rubber. I think when that seriousness is later required (aside from Blackbeard) it will be done at a time when he learns the truth and then unleashes his full potential as the more serious warrior of liberation. Maybe all of his gears can go even further than we've currently seen, since he believes he is rubber.
Luffy was able to be as serious as he ever was at the end of the Kaido fight despite being in Gear 5, so Oda could just continue this and simply have Luffy be serious in Gear 5 when he needs to be. He could also do something like, if Luffy starts off too angry/devastated, he can't transform into Gear 5.
it is because of this ass pull power-up (gear 5/ prodigy/ chosen one) to defeat Kaido is just a band-aid solution. Now it creates a long-term problem for one piece. Every villain will be inevitably compared to kaido on a power scale. How can you call someone the "strongest creature" only to find out there are more people stronger than him.
Lately most of the fights have been very serious i feel Oda flipped it back. Used to be goofy then become serious until time skip were was mostly serious and not as goofy to end game ark back to goofy. I think we will be seeing a gear beyond gear 5th or a form and that will be the final form where serious might come back

I think you are forgetting something morj In that month that oda went on break,they dropped those like magazines ( I have forgotten what they called them). In one of those magazines it was stated that awakening of zoans find it difficult to control it initially that's why Luffy was laughing uncontrollably at the beginning of kaido's fight and later settled.
I feel like there’s eventually going to be a point to where Luffy will have an inner struggle between himself and Nika and to where he will have to be able to overcome Nika’s will within the fruit from making Luffy deviate from his goal. It would be a cool thing to explore and would be like a Ichigo vs his Zanpakto type situatuon
I think G5 Luffy can still smile and be a bit goofy but the fight retains its serious tone. We even got a bit of that toward the end of the Kaido vs Luffy.
Maybe when he gets serious or has his freedom taken away his Nika form will lose the "Sun" and instead turn into more of an eclipse form making the white hair darker etc, just a thought since an eclipse is when the moon blocks out all the sunlight (In this case Blackbeard in my opinion)

I gotta say you took the wrong example with Arlong Park, the most memorable moment for me was the goofiness because the fact Luffy made these people, who have spent a decade of being terrorized by Arlong, laugh at him was one of the most powerful blows Luffy had that fight.
Luffy tried to eat crocodile, put arlong teeth in his mouth, became semi deflated with enel, ate kats mochi literally his own special move, tank man against cracker, and many more examples i think gear five was just the most obvious offender but he's always fought goofy. But i see where your coming from its gonna be tough to write a real serious fight again if luffy can literally turn his enemies into a jump rope, but i like how the gags are used early on in the fights rather than at the end so your right about it
Beside Tank Man, everything else was in the earlier stages of the fights where the story didn't put Luffy in a very serious spotlight. Even then with Tank Man, that whole fight wasn't the ultimate dramatic battle of the arc.

I kinda like Luffy being overpowered for once, as he was the underdog all story. But I can see how that would get stale for a lot of people. Interesting to see how Oda will handle this for the rest of the series.
Luffy definitely was not an underdog in terms of his strength until we get to maybe Alabasta or Enies Lobby. he pretty much coasted all of his east blue fight and even managed to beat Crocodile fairly handily once he could attack him.
@@goldmemberpb , Paramount War was actually the Arc where Luffy is the underdog losing to the major powerhouses of the Admirals, and now that Luffy is a Yonko he’s not only not an underdog anymore, but he also doesn’t have to fight all of his fights extremely seriously too.
I think it is possible, at least on the choreography side, and a great example of this is Spinel, from the Steven Universe Movie. I'm pretty sure her powers to stretch and be elastic like rubber were actually inspired by Luffy, however the way in which she uses them is extremely violent and deadly. This is mainly conveyed through the animation in her climax fight with Steven, as he's more on the defensive and she's just swinging like crazy, spinning her fists and banging into him like a beyblade! The sound effects exentuate this, as it has a very friction, burning and speedy WHAK sound to it. I feel like Oda could use a lot of these techniques, as well as create a juxtaposition where Luffy enacts Gear 5, but can't even laugh or smile from the get go, to make future fights have a dark tone to begin with. However, this is a tough balancing act, so I'm with you on that concern for the future...
It definitely will be by the end of the story once he starts learning he’s not a rubber man and that the nika fruit can quite possibly do whatever he puts his imagination towards
I got a potentially insane theory that I don't think anyone's thought about yet as far as I've seen that might tie the story together in a big way... What if the original Nika's mother was Imu... And history may be repeating itself.
That Kaido comment about devil fruits not being enough is weird, since he was defeated by the power of a devil fruit, but it does hint that even gear 5th might not be enough in the future. Even without Blackbeard removing the power. We still have villains like Akainu, possibly Shanks or maybe someone else in Elbaf as candidates for a serious fight. Maybe Luffy uses gear 5th but has to finish the fight without it, just using a new type of haki or something.
Morj this might be your best video yet. Bravo. My skepticism about Gear 5th has subsided now. You helped me think about the whole thing way differently.
I dont like it when people say its fine Luffy vs kaido wasnt too serious. Sure, having comedic fights can/is a good thing, but this fight specifically shouldnt have been this lighthearted imo. This was the culmination of the by far longest and most important arc to date, oda spent years trying to show us how important this fight was for wano and for the whole world. And for it to end in this light-hearted, non dramatic way felt anti-climatic to me.
This is a hot take but not entirely wrong but I feel it becoming such a light hearted fight is what made it so interesting because that’s nika main effect and presence and it goes against the common troupe which makes it memorable. Too me gear 5th feels like luffy is being a sociopath just laughing while dealing out deadly blows it’s like bugs bunny but with bloodlust.

I remember one comment I saw was that Luffy wouldn’t use Gear 5 in fights vs Akainu or Blackbeard. These are the guys who took Luffy’s closest friend from him, and he wouldn’t want to be smiling and goofing around with them. He might just use the other gears so he can remain serious
I feel like we’re all ignoring the theme here(Luffy vs Kaido = Luffy W mid diff/low diff). In this video he made it clear that against the people that ain’t really a problem for Luffy he’s more comical until maybe he needs to up the anti a little. After Luffy entered G5 against Kaido he was beating that ass 😂😂😂

I personally hate gear 5 as it is. Lack of tension and odas determination to keep stuff as light as possible has always been my biggest grievance with OP. IMO people are just in shock because its suprising the series went down this path but its really not that enjoyable, especially enough to make up for the lack of seriousness. This type of slapstick comedy i think only works in an actual show not still pages so im rly not liking any of luffys fights
Great point on BB pointing towards a good ol classic luffy slugfest. Would be awesome to see. I did also get a weird feeling when first seeing Tone shift of luffys new form. But I found Oda having Kaido point out how it makes reality seem like comic book and having luffys time limiter still keeping things feeling dangerous, helped keep things grounded overall and not like Oda changed the series in just one chapter
I definitely think something like the Shinra smile will happen. The eyes hidden, face dark, Smile wide. It can be more intimidating than you think, and also the light of the Nika-Nika No Mi vs the darkness of the Yami-Yami No Mi would be a super cool visual. Blackbeard isn’t very serious when he fights, so the insanity between the two would make fights hype.
i think Akainu would be on a similar level to blackbeard. while yes blackbeard put Ace on the path to be executed, Akainu was the one who ended Ace's life with his bare hands. Gear 5th could maybe tap into the dichotomy of luffy's character that you pointed out. since it can double down on the more silly side maybe it can also do the same for the other side as well, if written well. we shall see!
My prediction is I think Gear 5th would still be used often just not with enemies where Luffy is emotionally invested in or an enemy that is "personal" to Luffy per se like "Akainu" , the difference i think Luffy's enemies are from this point onwards in my prediction would be if an enemy like Kaido or someone that is "needed" to "defeat" to get the goal Luffy would then use Gear 5th but if it's "personal" and Luffy "wants" instead of "need" to defeat or kill an enemy like Akainu who has a "personal" beef with, Luffy would choose to stay on base and fight using Haki.
I love gear 5's power! how he magically just pulled out glasses when he knew he was going to travel fast. seems like such a luffy move to do! when fights get serious i'd imagine luffy still has a smile on his face, just an evil grin like he had against lucci. tbh i think that is scarier than a fully serious luffy. he looks like a complete psycho with his deadly no limitation powers. i do wonder however if he would get stronger if he was serious in g5 and just loses it.

I mean at least at the end of Naruto when him and Sasuke turn out t o be a god reincarnate, at least we knew Naruto had the 9 tails from the start! Luffy was literally presented as this total underdog who is able to get creative and resourceful with his accidentally obtained rubbery powers, and then as soon as he awakens, all that's out the window. And for the record there is still much story to be covered so I have not completely lost faith, and still love Morj's channel because it brings some skepticism and critical thinking into what is almost a religious fanbase that does not dare question the book of Oda, but my god! Gear 5th was bad storytelling, and the ending of Wano was lazy.

Just more laziness, the most overdone trope in the book: “shonen protagonist falls down and gets a crazy power up through sheer will! So hype!” Like luffy had to train for years to get gear 4th down pat, it wasn’t just something that came to him after training, he was perfecting it. But all of a sudden now he actually he just has this transformation thats a bajillion times more powerful and he can just turn on like any other zoan? Sorry, but to me that just comes off as a shitty and rushed way of powering up the protagonist after over a thousand chapters of having him be the guy with the rubber fruit.

To be honest, i think Oda fucked up big time, i dont really care for the tone but for the powers of Gear 5 in general, how the hell do you balance reality warping abilities? wheres the stakes in that? The narrative is buggered, i´d tell you that.
it wasn't the silliness, the ending was just underwhelming for such a grandiose fight that lead up to that moment. and the fight was finished with a big bad punch like every other big fight. not to mention we didn't even get closure on wether Kaido is really dead or not.
I think once luffy learns that his fruit is not the gum gum fruit but Nika, and learns his power is only limited by imagination like it was stated, that's when we'll see him become a true monster. Whether that means a more serious fight or an even sillier one, I'm here for it.

In my mind, Luffy needs to start taking all his fights and situations more seriously. Look where he is now and the people he will fight in the upcoming arcs. Yeah I can see that G5 is a little ridiculous but if it helps get the job done then there is nothing left to say about it.
It would of been so awesome if when Ace died Luffy looked at the camera and went Th-th-th-th-th-that’s all folks, and hit Akainu if the face with a pie then skipped around the battlefield going Duck season, rabbit season, duck season, rabbit season. One Piece fans will make excuses for anything and scream genius no matter what, especially influencers who rely on clicks. I’ve seen many of them trying to fake laugh their way through it, and it comes off as so fake. But One Piece fans are in full denial at this point, because investing this much time in something and watching it fail is beyond what they can handle. Since Gear 5, zero dramatic tension. Wano was the longest Arc, and the Kaido fight was ruined with skipping rope, and yuck, yuck. All that build up, for skipping rope. Oh how amazing, so amazing, that totally fit the tone. Everything that Kaido had done got turned into yuck yuck, an easy win, a stupid fight, not to mention gear 5 looks horrible. All these fans were literally drawing and creating looks for what they thought gear 5 would be, and they all looked bad ass, and they got saddled with Luffy with white hair. FYI it’s just a super lazy and easy way for animators to draw Luffy. It’s Luffy with slightly different hair. Oh wow, what a great look, you changed his hair color. So genius. Didn’t even explore the fact that since Ace died and how he died that post time skip he has demonstrated the use of his own Devil fruit and Aces. Similar to how Blackbeard uses two Devil fruits. Nope now he’s bugs bunny. It’s just his base powers, amplified to a larger scale with a Looney tuned twist for added comedy cause he wasn’t funny enough before?
Luffy trouncing on Lucci was much better than the Gear Fifth crap we got against Kaido. There were a couple of sick G5 moments of Luffy vs Kaido, but overall, it killed the entire climax so hard.
I agree with everything you said about the tone of future battles and I think it's brilliant that Blackbeard is the counter to the goofiness, but I will die on the hill that Oda fumbled the tone for Luffy vs Kaidou. Luffy *SHOULD* have had a huge amount of animosity towards him, he was an enslaver that brought hunger and thirst and all kinds of suffering to a country for 2 whole decades and hurt a lot of Luffy's friends, it's basically the perfect combo of things that piss Luffy off. The battle between Luffy and a fun sparring uncle made no sense considering everything Kaidou had done and to me this fight should've been right up there with Doflamingo and Crocodile in terms of animosity.

well to be fair, the laughing Luffy is the personality of the Gear 5, the 'personality' is not wholly what it brings... the characteristics of the power up is still the main point, he can still finish his enemy however even if it's not goofy anymore, it's not like the laughing personality is solely what it brings or is Luffy is bounded to only laugh or be goofy. I think he can be serious, and the fight can be serious, but the main point is Luffy's attack are looney tunes meaning all his attacks will spring out of goofiness (although serious) / creativity (see the characteristics of Gear 5 what it brings, exponentially strong rubber body, imagination etc.,), even maybe all stakes are on the line. Solution to this is controlled manner of Luffy on how he fights which will happen if the situation demands it or is Luffy controls it so much, only point is the POWER UP is the main point, not and all his attacks or force springs out of creativity and goofiness he brings although serious.

The reason he seems to toy around and is only capable of being a comedic cartoon character when he transforms is that he isn't forced to be serious. He won't be able to pull off the stunts we see against black bread who can erase the devil fruit's power entirely. The fight against Akainu would also be more focused on haki combat as Luffy can't touch him otherwise. This form makes him freeform yes but logias are also extremely freeform like the smoke smoke fruit but then get decimated by haki users.
I have mixed feelings on gear 5 while it is interesting to see I feel like that I might honestly prefer Gear 4 over it due to how wacky and silly fights turn into when it appears, it doesn't really feel earned and just sort of happened because it had to. While luffy's big fights have had silly moments they're usually small isolated moments that don't linger and aren't nearly as prevalent as gear 5. Not to mention it seems like luffy can just activate it at will with him randomly using it against lucci which if Oda isn't careful could lead to gear 5 losing its novelty very quickly.
That was one of my big issues w/ Gear 5. At first when he had to force his heart to keep beating, it felt like there were serious consequences to it. But now, he just gets sluggish/old, then bounces back after a few seconds (if Egghead is anything to go by, he recovers quicker than from Gear 4)
I love the serious and determined luffy moments. Gear 5 does lessen the suspense so I completely agree. This could end up too light hearted and start feeling like a fairy tail or sum

The joy of battle and fighting might be the fruits true purpose, all other connotations and attributes are just lore added to the fruit as a result of a bloodlust enraged god killing people
