Judaism is MUCH more than just "Orthodox" Jews and "non-religious" Jews. Your channel would benefit greatly if you invited more experts from non-Orthodox branches of Judaism to explain how the rabbis deal with intricacies of Jewish law in the modern world. Someone raised in an Orthodox background simply won't deal with those variations and will present Judaism as far more monolithic than it actually is. It would be like determining Christians as practicing Roman Catholics only and everyone else as secular/lapsed, and treating Roman rulings as the definitive rulings, when the Eastern Orthodox, Chinese Nestorian, and Ethiopian church exist (not to mention 50k Protestant denominations).
@MrEVAQ
@MrEVAQ 2 года назад
The only two other dominant forms of Judaism besides Orthodoxy are Reform and Conservative Judaism and they arose in the late 19th century. So while it could be interesting, they haven't really been in the game as long as Orthodox Judaism and so I'd assume it would be less interesting to most people here who want more of an emphasis on ancient history.
@Vishanti
@Vishanti 2 года назад
@@MrEVAQ that is not correct. Reform Judaism developed in the 19th century and what we call Orthodox Judaism arose in direct response to the initial ideas of the Reform movement. Judaism was NOT all Orthodox prior to that. The ideas of Hasidim already existed well before the Orthodox sects arose (satmar, haredi, chabad etc), and the medieval period was when the mystical writings of Kabbalah/zohar developed. There was intense debate over these writings at the time, and even a false messiah in there. Judaism is not monolithic and hasn't been since the 2nd Temple period.
@MrEVAQ
@MrEVAQ 2 года назад
@@Vishanti You can call it Orthodox Judaism or Rabbinic Judaism or whatever else you'd like, it doesn't matter, what's important is that we both understand what we're referring to. The naming convention is modern but Orthodox Judaism certainly did not arise in the 19th century. The name arose from the need to distinguish it from other emerging forms of Judaism like Reform and Conservative Judaism, both of which really did arise in the 19th century. In addition, I don't know anyone who distinguishes Hasidism from Orthodox Judaism. Hasidism is a form of Orthodox Judaism. So back to what I commented about in the first place: It's true that there is a vast movement of Reform and Conservative Judaism (especially among Western Jewry) and that therefore there's more than just "Orthodox", but that might not be too appealing to most MythVision viewers who I'd assume would be more interested learning about the "orthodox" Jewish beliefs of the past two millennia and not the relatively new beliefs of two 19th century sects.
@Vishanti
@Vishanti 2 года назад
@@MrEVAQ there wasn't just one way of doing Judaism until the Reform movement came along. That's my point. It's absolute Orthodox propaganda to act like they preserved the "correct" traditions while other movements corrupted or compromised it. Judaism has *always* adapted and developed. And even now, the Orthodox branch represents about 10% of religiously-identified Jews. It is literally the smallest of the branches and in no way represents "true," "correct," or "original" rabbinic Judaism. We DO need to distinguish Orthodox from lower-case orthodox(y) because it perpetuates the incorrect idea that Orthodox big-O was the only rabbinic Judaism before the 19th century. It wasn't. Hasidism was flourishing before the Reform movement and the backlash by big-o Orthodox Judaism. The modern categories do no accurately reflect 1800 years of rabbinic Judaism, which is why Mythvision needs more than just big-O Orthodox guests on because properly studied people know this history
@josepellecer1911
@josepellecer1911 2 года назад
@@MrEVAQ Here is the thing, though. Modern orthodox judaism is as new as every other modern expression of Judaism. Their concerns, beliefs, customs, etc etc, have been shaped by the realities of the modern world. Modern orthodox judaism owes most of its views to Rabbi Raphael Hirsch, who is one (but not the only) intellectual founder of modern orthodoxy. if we are being historically honest, we have to recognize that judaism has evolved and changed a lot through history, and it makes no sense (unless you are orthodox) to pretend orthodox judaism was the historical form of judaism since the beginning. This is just anachronistic, and a disservice to the richness of the jewish religion. Id recommend reading "how judaism became a religion" by Faye Batnitzky and "a history of judaism" by Martin Goodman. Both are great resources.

Was great to hear a former Jew talking about how the OT isn't what it seems to be and that we can look at it with a caustic eye. This was so different than Rabbi Singer, who just seems to have it in for the NT. In my reading some books on Kabbalah they all say that Rabbis told a lot of fables and stories and regularly argued with God (wish Christian holy people would do that). Thanks, Derek and Dan.

I am a Jew and I fall into the same camp of observance as your guest. I have enjoyed your channel for about a year now And I have studied Christian religions And like you am fascinated by by the disabuse of of 2 millennium of supposition about their scriptures . However, as a Jew I feel myself to be an oddity in this I am similarly fascinated by the deconstruction of the Hebrew Bible And the evolution of ideologies regarding its formation and compilation. The same razor of historical inquiry cuts through all in patterns almost as fascinating as the texts themselves. However I take umbrage against A Flippant remark that with a little reflection I think you probably did not even mean. I know few Jews that have any interest in Christianity much less it's textual incongruities. I think many Jews understand that Paul as an author of epistle literature created Christianity. I have seen Tovia on RU-vid and I also subscribe to the Jews for Judaism channel . Both perspectives are anti missionary But themselves have only the most tengential Relationship to Judaism. I have never heard a rabbi speak against Christianity otherwise . There is no need to look to Christianity for topics Given the depth and breadth of Jewish intellectual engagement for over 2000 years . The idea that Jews need to speak against Christianity as a matter of religious obligation Is in my mind an irreverent misunderstanding. Though I speak not ungratefully, It is a reflection of your Particular brand Of interaction. There is no sense in which Jews define themselves against Christianity. The edifice of Judaism Is palatial and intricate Beyond the mansions Of its less inquiring daughter religions , And they add to it Very little in comparison to what it has built up out of itself. I don't know a single rabbi who could comment on Paul for more than a couple of sentences. But can go on for hours about the unity of God the beauty of the sabbath The sublimity of the daily prayer cycle. The relationship of the Jew to God And commandment after glorious commandment through which our exaltation in the Presence is enabled. Apart from the few anti missionary rabbis who are well known to you I'm sure. Paul has no meaning or interest for the Jew. There is too much that is more sublime with which to engage. I love your broadcast and have learned so much. Thank you!

No you're not a "jew". Your religion has absolutely nothing to do with the " torah" at all. Its paganism with a very thin biblical veneer. Where's your animal sacrifices? Where's your Levite peiesthood? Where's the Shekinah ever mentioned in the bible? Your religion is nothing but degenerate pagan sex worship, the female and male aspects of the generative force. Your rabbis worship an angel named Metatron. And yes 99% of all rabbis are Cabalists.
@palsyr4307
@palsyr4307 Год назад
Paul spoke on universal concerns, his letters transformed the world. The rabbis as you describe focused way more on the rituals particular to your ethno-religious group which have no real sublime impact on most people outside your ethnic group. Paul spoke to humanity first and foremost. The rabbis spoke to Jews first and foremost. This is why most rabbis as you say have few things to speak of on Paul but have so much to say on daily Jewish prayer cycles. Christianity and Judaism along with Islam are all deeply inquiring faiths with different focuses of inquiry. Christians and Muslims are more concerned with their relationship with God and you are more concerned with your own relationship with God.

I have learned something in my reasonably long life: the essential difference between Judaism and Christianity is not about the accuracy or reliability of the sources that each consider foundational but about one thing and one thing alone: deifying a human being, making a human sacrifice the centre of salvation, practising symbolic cannibalism, all the core beliefs of Christianity and all completely antithetical to the core beliefs of Judaism. The actual character Jesus is almost irrelevant because there are as many Jesuses as there are Christian denominations - and gospels, canonical or otherwise. Seen from one angle that Jesus seemed to have been a cool guy but seen from another angle Jesus looks like a thoroughly reprehensible fellow with sick ideas. The problem arises from the way Christianity misappropriated the Jewish foundational texts and the history of the Jewish people and claimed both as their own. We Jews sort of resent that kind of thing.

Another great video Derek - thanks for all the work you do. As a person of no religion who was born and brought up as an observant Jew, I have to point out that your observation about Rabbis lambasting Christianity and Paul is simply not correct - in fact the opposite is the case. One reason was for survival purposes, considering how murderous the Church's persecution and incitement to persecution of the Jews has been anyway. The other reason is that to the Jew who is aware of and kept busy by his religion, other religions simply don’t figure on the landscape - they simply aren’t considered relevant to Jewish life. Rabbi Tuvia Singer is the exception, not the rule as far as the idea of Rabbis lambasting Christianity goes. He is unique for several reasons, one of them his being a rabbi that actually studied Christianity, the second in being outspoken and fearless in criticising and debunking Christianity and thirdly that he demonstrates a compassionate and patient attitude to all.

Qos and Yahweh Unlike the chief god of the Ammonites (Milcom) and the Moabites (Chemosh), the Tanakh refrains from explicitly naming the Edomite Qōs. The omission may be explained, according to some scholars, by assuming there were close similarities between Yahweh with Qōs, that would've made rejection of the latter difficult. Multiple poetic refrains in the Hebrew Bible claim that Yahweh embarked, in some form, from Se'ir in the region of Edom. Recently, the view has been advanced that Yahweh was originally a Kenite god whose cult spread north of Midian to the Israelites. According to this approach, Qōs might possibly have been a title for Yahweh, rather than a name. A further point connecting Yahweh with Qōs, aside from their common origin in that territory, is that the Edomite cult of the latter shared characteristics of the former. Thus, we find that Doeg the Edomite has no problem in worshiping Yahweh, he is shown to be at home in Jewish sanctuaries. Circumcision, an essential Jewish rite, was practiced in Edom. Additionally, supplication of Yahweh is not uncommon where mentions of Qos are lacking: a pottery sherd from the late 9th/early 8th centuries BCE at Kuntillet Ajrud blesses its recipient by "Yahweh of Teman", which some have taken as implying that, at least from an Israelite perspective, Qos and Yahweh were considered identical, though it by no means necessarily proves it. On the other hand, there are some discrepancies which make a direct association between the two difficult. The identification of names in the Egyptian list of Shasu clans in Se'ir creates a continuity problem, since Qos names only emerge some 500 years later. Oded Balaban and Ernst Axel Knauf have claimed that certain names found on Ramesside topographical lists are theophoric and contain references to Qos, which if true would put the deity's earliest attestation more than 600 years before Yahweh's.

This was really good. Absolutely hilarious too. Moses: Why did you give an idiot like me the Torah? God: Shut up. Look over there. Moses: (sees guy getting flayed) Ahh. Praise be to God. God: Shut up. I know it baby. Honestly, the only explanation for why there are christians at all that makes sense to me now is that the greeks and romans didn't know how goddamn funny some of the hebrew writings are. Christianity is so self serious and frumpy in comparison. It's a wonder it ever had any appeal to anyone at all. Yeah yeah, I know ancient Israelites (and plenty of modern ones too, fucking zionists...) had some utterly deplorable ideas. Plus ya know, the whole "god is an incoherent concept imagined by people who lacked the tools to know better" thing. I'm just saying that this is a lot like the second time I read Hamlet and realized it makes 100% more sense as comedy than a tragedy. The melodrama is cranked up to 11. The prince is wandering around all goth and talking to skulls. Dudes hiding behind curtains saying bonkers catch phrases. A girl throwing herself out a window over her dirtbag crush being a moody bitch. Literally R2-D2 and C-3PO. You can't tell me that isn't a comedy. Feel like with a critical examination of the hebrew bible, we could determine once and for all that the whole thing was an elaborate sketch comedy routine. And we've been getting this whole "religion" thing way wrong. Moses schlepping his way up and down the mountain. The entire flood thing. I'm certain there are some in jokes in genesis that are just sailing over my head. Maybe all the slavery and genocide were just ancient takes on dead baby jokes? I dunno, I'm sure we can work it out.

1. The Talmud doesn't say anything definitive, it's a record of various opinions of hundreds of Rabbis over hundreds of years. It says a lot of stuff that is just an opinion that Jews follow. 2. Because the Bible was written by Israelites for Israelites. 3. no, thee God of Israel is the God of everyone and created everything and everyone (according to religious Judaism) 4. Not sure where you get that from, many non-Jews are lauded and heroic in the Bible and Talmud. Goyim means nations and Israel is also called a Goy (singular). 5. There is intolerance towards non-Jews (and often towards Jews with the 'wrong' opinion), this is human nature and is seen through all civilisations. There is also an element of Jews having negative views towards non-Jews generally because of 2000 years of oppression.

I thought Moses only got the 10 commandments from God on mount Sinai All the other added stuff are man-made traditions and religious customs. THAT is where Israel's problems started. The Scribes and Farisees thousands of add-ons. They made a bugger-up of basic easy to follow laws like: Thou shalt not kill (humans/animals) (Jeremiah 7:21, 25, 31) Thou shall not worship other God's Thou shalt love thy neighbour Thou shalt not covet Jeremiah 8:8-23 says these teachers of the law have twisted the commandments. They had selfish motives in all they did
@caliginous101
@caliginous101 Год назад
Every version of every religion has to interpret its scriptures. This is because the basic wording doesn't tell you enough e.g. "Thou shalt not kill", what if someone is coming to kill you, are you allowed to kill them? Etc. The Sadducees had their own interpretations, and the Pharisees had theirs which seem to have continued with the Rabbis. Jesus in the Gospels appears to follow something similar to Rabbinical interpretation. Throughout history all religions have had internal disagreements, sometimes violent, about who has the correct interpretation. Each side will say their version goes back to the originator (Moses, Jesus, Mohommed etc), the rabbis are just doing what everyone else does.
