When the first part was uploaded, I was single. Now 3 years later, I'm still single

Wow, it's been a while. I switched careers twice, got married, divorced, made a fortune, lost it, and died and was resurrected since the last one.

The best bit is when part 6 finally drops it’s only gonna cover another 4 minutes of the movie.

How naïve I was a mere 80 minutes ago. I started part 1 of this series almost two hours ago. As I was watching I checked the dates of each video being released and arrogantly assumed that I’d see the review in its entirety because there were 5 videos. Here I am nearly two hours later not knowing whether to laugh or cry because time is now laughing and crying at me.

Some people died hoping that they would watch part 6. Let that sink in. I don't know if I'm lucky or unlucky to watch this film in 2021. How will it change my life or will it? I would probably be dead before realizing this. It seems this analysis series evolved to become an art of itself. Thank you for this and hoping to watch part 6 before

Next video, Adam is going to hire an actor to do the review for him as himself except it's going to devolve into a story about him trying to write part six.

Once this series is over I can finally die.

I had just turned 13 when this series started and I watched the first episode. I'm turning 21 this year. EDIT: Due to some cynicism about this in the replies, I probably should've mentioned that the reason I commented this was because I was subscribed back when all the parts of this series was released. So I'm not just remarking on the amount of time that has passed between then and now, moreso the fact that I actually did watch part one when I was 13, and it was crazy to me how much my life had changed between this series starting and now, expecially as it is still ongoing.

I was 16 when first watching this series. Since then I graduated high school, spent 4 years in college, got a degree, got a job, moved out, got engaged, bought a house, raised a dog, got another job, and soon I'll be married. Life goes by faster and faster and then you're dead.

So... When will you be making videos analyzing your videos that analyzed Synedoche, New York?

The sheer complexity of this film is giving me a goddamn existential crisis.

This is probably my favourite film, though I find it difficult to reccomend. It's also the kind of movie that still baffles me that a human being wrote and created this.

there was this short story by Richard Matheson where a man wishes that his life was edited like a movie. He wanted to cut out all of the boring shit. But then that happens and life turns too fast and he loses track of time and people, similarly too caden

If you put the lengths of these videos together you get about 107 minutes, Synecdoche New York is 124. He said at the end of this video he's about 80 minutes in. If it continued at this length, the videos would be around 33% longer than the movie.

i literally watched all five parts at one go, thinking these videos were all uploaded over a span of maybe, at most, a year. then i looked at the upload dates and realized that so much time that passed since the beginning of this series. the same uncanny leap through time that i felt when watching the movie itself

So you’ve said you’ve got part 6 coming up after your lion king review. Since this review has started, I’ve graduated high school, had 4 jobs, and have moved 4 different times. Since the start of this review, Ive went from my blubbering teens to almost my bumbling mid 20s. What’s haunting me is it hasn’t felt that long.

That part about each person showing only a fraction of what's going on in their minds really got to me.

Adum, I support your channel and think that your video's are fantastic. The amount of work and time you put into them is impressive and makes you stand out from other channel's. I've gotten my friends into your video's and your video's have helped me through death in my life. So thank you for these video's and I'm excited to see what you have next. Take care.

That last comment he made about us as the audience having no fucking idea what's going on in his life right now hit kinda hard. I think this movie review has brought up a lot of struggles within himself that we will never fully comprehend. I do love these and part of me is sad to know I'll be waiting for a good while before the next part is here. But at the same time, I think the drain this has had on Adam is more than we understand. So if you read this Adam, I will happily watch whatever's next on your to-do list, you return to this if/when the time is right for you.

It's incredible how both quickly these parts seem to fly by and yet how each minute, each second is crammed full of detail. Both the movie and this analysis provide such deep insight yet don't even scratch the surface of the topics they try to discuss. And the ending to this part, maybe it hit me harder then most but that is such a true statement. We all sit here and see this go up and jokingly scream ITS BEEN 400 YEARS SINCE THE LAST PART OF THIS, yet we have absolutely no idea what was or is going on in Adam's life right now. The joys, pain, suffering and stress taking place throughout all this. Adam I know this piece is stressful to produce and isn't the most popular series on your channel, but I honestly think this will be one of your greatest works, even if the majority of your subscribers never both to check it our. This is a beautifully awful tragic dream, that warns and advises us of things we can avoid becoming or answer and the things we cannot.

I wonder how many YMS viewers have died since this series started and will never see part 6

I bet what happens is, part 6 is finished and Adam has arranged, as part of his will, that it will be released after he dies as his last RU-vid video.

It took 12 years to make. You can literally hear Adam grow up in the video.

The biggest final message that I got from this film was how to get empathy from despair. The depression of the film comes from the truth of it, we will all die and that’s all we know. To pave that path to die in our own way we must connect to other people. That’s the only way to find ourselves and our role in society. That’s the goal of all art, to connect. Caden must find both a way to connect to his true identity and the people he cares about. This is why him connecting to the role or gender of women is so important, because then he can be empathetic and have better relationships with the family he wishes and wished to have. The play shows the separation between faked connection and real connection, which is defined by our intentions. True empathy and meaning in our individual and collective lives comes from genuine care rather than connections based on only self interest, like Adele’s with Caden or Caden’s with Claire. What I got from the film is that our identity can be weakened and life less meaningful when we live in paranoia of death and let self despair take away our empathy. We all die, and that may make life feel less special or significant, but the fact that we all have the same end means we should connect on that level and treat each other accordingly. We can’t treat people like extras, we may be the director of our own life and death, but everyone else matters just as much.

I hope when, not if, this movie is released on the Criterion Collection, Adam will give his blessing and let this whole series to be a part of it, if they want it because it is a great study of a great piece of film.

this review began in 31 Dec 2014, this fifth instalment came out in 11 Jun 2017 , it is now the 21st of October 2019. when this series started I was just finishing high-school, I'm now about to start a postgraduate degree. three committed relationships have came and went, I've lost two grandparents and had three separate jobs. I've had hundreds of new and different experiences but the time between the first video and waiting for the sixth instalment feels remarkable short and notably unremarkable.

Well its been nice, see you on part 6 in 2020.

Yo, Adam, don't sweat it. Totally understand why this took so long to make, you're just one man and can only do so much. Great video, as always. Always saw this movie on the shelf at local shops and never knew how amazing it was. It's incredible but also kinda depressing... Okay, it's super depressing, but still a masterpiece.

Are you gonna finish this off this year? I think it's fantastic how you have analyzed this film so far. It's certainly one of my favourites and I feel very lucky that this in-depth look at the film exists.

Just wanted to say this is my favorite series you're doing, I enjoy the funny videos a lot but the core of the entertainment value isn't that you're laughing at a bad movie but that you have insightful things to say. So please do the videos that you enjoy making and dont listen to the fans too much. Its not for me to say whether or not you enjoyed making the Unfriended series or this one more or less but I got more out of these 5 parts than that YMS review or the Kool Kat videos. While I'm here, just want to recommend Nathan Fielder's The Rehearsal to anyone who's enjoyed this movie. Great analysis, loving the attention to all these incredibly subtle details.

No part 6 yet huh, just watched this movie for the first time now and been quite obsessed with it, really enjoyed your interpretations and takes on it. I'm kind of only commenting this so i can comeback here later in life to reflect on the passage of time, and do as Charlie Kaufman advised and rewatch this movie

Trying to review this movie in-depth reminds me of a guy talking about the problem with trying to make a scaled down model of the universe. Eventually, even the "scaled down" model grows to large to comprehend.

I started watching this when I was 16, now I'm 18 and this makes even more sense to me. Between graduating from high school, being in college, dealing with relationships that ultimately fail and constantly scrutinizing myself, I feel like I relate to Caden so much more. Youthful ignorance is sweet and I wish I'd appreciated it more when I was younger.

I just realised: Part 5 has taken so long that I'll have to watch the film again to remind myself of all the themes!

Just a little thing I've noticed: When Caden buys (rents) the building, the woman mentions how Shakespeare was played there. I think that was a play on the famous Shakespeare quote "all the world's a stage" with the place being a literal stage displaying the world and that being a theme in the film

I watched this movie for the first time last night. I watched all 5 parts of this review this morning. I feel so bad for the people who have been on this ride for 8 years. I actually checked to see if the guy who makes these videos had died. Sorry I’m not a sub, I just stumbled across this today. Maybe he should cast someone in the play of life to fill this role for him. This is very fitting for the piece though.

I actually found a massive overarching theme with the movie relating personally, being Caden worries about death constantly in his younger self, but as he grows old he tries more to reflect on the distant past to relive moments-thinking about death less. It goes really well with the “fog” analogy, being Caden never living for life, instead trying to control different periods of time in his life.

it's so insane to think that you started these in 2014

In the six years this review has taken so far I’ve: Failed at school, then gotten better; given my first kiss, lost my virginity; entered high school, graduated high school, entered college; had my first girlfriend, had my first breakup; idealized multiple career paths, to then lose hope on them; turned from being a conservative, to being a leftie on the political spectrum; went to a psychologist, finished the sessions; had my first experiences with death and many other things I can’t remember right now. Just goes to show how, just like in the movie, time flies past you in the blink of an eye and that there is really no way to stop that from happening. In a fleeting moment your happiness turns into sadness and your sadness into happiness without the existence of chapters nor timestamps, just the beating of time passing by as you try to hold on to your most important memories. This is not necessarily depressing, as all thing must come to an end; it is, though, a reality check. Maybe I’ll try to take more advantage of the time I have here, or maybe I’ll just slow things down, live more in the present. Or maybe I’ll do none of that and just accept that time passes by, that things change and that the present isn’t eternal as I patiently wait for the next installment in this review. No one knows where I’ll be in six years; if my current identity will be stripped away or if it will find itself reinforced, if I will be alive or if I will just be another memory in people’s life. I guess we’ll see.

I've really enjoyed this series. Thanks for the insight and hope you are able to finish it.

i had totally called it in terms of why you weren't very concerned about finishing this series as fast as possible. and i appreciate you taking the time to mkae it perfect as well as finding new perspectives of the movie to explore.

Hey Adam, I have an idea for a new video/series you could make. I just started looking at your ratings on your imdb page and almost every time i see you rate a movie a 10/10 it shocks me because of how unexpected it is. It's strange seeing you love a particular movie that i could not have anticipated you would (LotR movies, the thing, etc). You could do a video just talking about why you love those movies so much, I think that would be really interesting for us to see (especially since we only really see you talk about movies you love on your top 10 lists once a year).

Please please please!! You must finish the review! It is so thorough (fonts, song titles, translations, hidden meanings etc) I’m loving this series just as much as I’ve loved the film. I really can’t wait to see the continuation for the review. Best of luck to you in all your projects.
