The fact that he was quoted saying he would rather lose money and win a World Series then to make money and not win the World Series says all you need to know about George
I'll never understand the nostalgia for George M. Steinbrenner III. The ridiculous managerial firings, with alcoholic, "rage"aholic, psycho Billy Martin as the main headliner. Alienating Yogi for 15 years. Asinine no facial hair rule. Does anyone remember 1982-1995? Good riddance!
Wish you touched on steinbrenner’s involvement in the collusion scandal-the biggest scandal that baseball faced since the color line. It honestly makes his words of fielding a competitive team to its fullest extent look moot.
I found it ironic that Billy Martin judged people on being a “convict” yet he thought it was ok to assault people including a marshmallow seller? Today he would of been the convict.
As a Yankees fan, I loved George Steinbrenner. Sometimes he pressed the wrong buttons. But I loved how he had no tolerance for losing. Never scared of trying to improve his team. It's no coincidence they haven't been as good since he passed away.
Well his reign as Yankees owner was not all smooth by any means, what with his rapid cannon of firing managers, and general managers. That along with the bad moves the team made, and when he traded away their best prospects for over the hill veterans way past their primes. It took his suspension in the early 90's for the team being able to rebuild themselves into the dynasty they'd soon become when he wasn't around to interfere with operations. The fans you may remember even started cheering widely when that was announced too.
5:10 Martin was not fired in 1978, he resigned for “health reasons”. This then required the Yankees to pay out the rest of his contract. I am going to stop watching this video. The guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
Steinbrunner was definitely the reason why I quickly became a Mets fan. The only person who is currently on the Yankees who I have respect for is Aaron Judge.
George's mausoleum is down the road from me here in FL. I'd rate this video a C+ for some sloppy detail work. No mention of the early GS years w/ the firing of Ralph Houk leaving the Horace Clarke era, the remodel of Yankee Stadium aka playing home games at Shea in 74 & 75 along with the grand re-opening of the remodeled YS, George's 5 year prediction to bring a WS champion back to NY upon his purchase of the NYY or George's proclamation that he won't be involved in the day to day operations. Also no mention of GS being the first to sign Catfish Hunter & Don Gullet thus bringing in free agency into play in MLB (a BIG deal). Also no mention of GS threatening to move the team if Guiliani didn't build him a new ballpark or the falling concrete block in sect 22 of the mezzanine & George buying hot dogs for all the fans sitting in sect 22 to demonstrate how safe the park was (even though he wanted a new ballpark built). They also played a game at Shea while the stadium was repaired. No mention of the 2009 world champions (George's last & the NYY last). Also George was brought out during the pre-game festivities of the all-star game in a golf cart in the final season at Yankee Stadium which was a memorable night at YS. Basically, an amateurs' hour video here.
Add the owner's collusion scandal of free agency & GS making Thurman Munson NYY captain once again. Joe McCarthy proclaimed Lou Gehrig as the final captain of the NYY, but GS bucked McCarthy & said if he knew Munson that he would agree to make him capt. I am sure I'll recall other notable GS era items after this comment as well.
I personally love the clean shave rule. I liked how Georgia was. I’m here to win, forget anything else. We are going to be professional and classy while we do it, too.
