Part 1: Billy Martin had one of the craziest baseball stories in history, from his clutch playing days to many hirings and firings from the New York Yankees.
I cried that Christmas when I heard about Billy! He was the best manager in my lifetime bar none! Nobody could get out of a player what Billy did. How he is not in the HOF as a manager I’ll never understand it. Same goes for Graig Nettles as a player.
Ok first of all, he wasn't "hired and fired" 5 times. This is well documented. He resigned in 1978. His only firing was 1979 after he decked the marshmallow salesman. When Steinbrenner hired him again in 1983, it was an open contract that allowed the Yankees to reassign Martin as they saw fit. So in '84 he was made a scout and advisor, in '86 he went into the broadcast booth. And in '89 before he died, he was a roving scout again. But he never came off the Yankee payroll after 1983. You don't keep paying someone who's fired.
