It’s been 18 years since I first started work on The Getaway and I recently found the game I made in a retro games store. It was one of my first games, I collected a ton of memorabilia for it and the sequel, The Getaway: Black Monday. In this video I share this massive collection and show of some very unique “retro” gaming memorabilia.

I thoroughly enjoyed Black Monday. I still haven't played all of the original Getaway yet, but it's something I'm looking forward to doing.

@@RetroGamerBoy I've been playing it for around a week now and I like it quite a lot. I think it has aged well, because even now the fact that it's a real map of London and that the buildings and shops are real is still really impressive to me. Maybe it wouldn't be if I played modern games though, because for all I know this could be a common thing in modern games now. In fact, because it's now almost 20 years later, it makes the fact that the buildings, map, and cars are real even more fascinating as it's a nostalgic accurate representation of London in 2001 or 2002. When I've unlocked the free roam mode, it's going to be cool just going for a stroll or drive, looking at shops that might not even exist anymore. It's still fun to play too, I enjoy the driving, and going into old warehouses, derelict buildings, etc and having shoot outs. The only negative thing I can say about it is that the controls feel clunky and the camera is pretty bad. I actually just uploaded a video yesterday talking about the games I'm currently playing and The Getaway got a mention.

Great vid. Remember vividly playing Both, The getaway and The getaway black Monday as a kid. Makes me wanna re buy a playstation 2 just to play both games again!

I've heard that the PS5 will play all PlayStation games. So if you get one of these, you'll be able to play whatever you like.

A lot of people seem to want a new release. Have you seen Mafia Definitive Edition? It's virtually the same as The Getaway. It was released in the same year but in a few weeks the full remake is released.

Yup Sony was the party company during those times. We had company jollies to Malta, Disney Land Paris, and Corfu. It's was a pretty wild time.

"Holly Shit! I made that game, hey those are my smashed up cars in the background"😂 I saw it like 3 or 4 years after it's launch and was really surprised to see it. Usually the team was told about all brand deals. I guess they forget to mention this one 😅

This game was amazing the first and black Monday, even now I still play it thank you for your time with these masterpieces. Also did Sony ever get into any trouble with the licensing stuff like brands and cars ? Would love to know because I loved driving around and seeing all the different brands throughout the game. Thanks again :)

We licenced everything. In fact a number of shop front had to be changed because we could not get a license. Like McDonald's.

This was great to stumble upon, I caught the video you did for The Getaway; not sure I remember playing Black Monday but seeing the cut scenes in the previous video threw me back to being 14 haha. I did vehicle modeling in the Need For Speed community but unfortuantely stopped after that so I never got the chance to work for a company doing so.

TO7SAV I was one of 2 vehicle artists on the Getaway and then I lead the vehicle team on Black Monday and designed some of the vehicle missions. Fun fact, I was making the Getaway online, when we cancelled this I pitched with some of the team as an online social HUB. This became PlayStation Home 😝

There was the 1st E3 demos, which I created the cars for. Then there was a second demo and a vertical slice Dev cycle that I did not work on. At this time I was pitching something called the PSN Trophy system with Phil H to Japan.

I have one of the poker sets from the video but no recollection of how I came to own it. I’ve had it for 10+ years. Do you know if these were distributed to retailers along with the release? It’s the one piece in my collection that I have no knowledge of and this is the first reference to it I’ve ever seen online.

It was given out to the Dev team at the end of the project, along with an old school gym bag and a few other pieces. I don't think it was sold anywhere. Its possible that the PR and marketing teams had a deal with a store.

So happy to have found your videos on The Getaway & Black Monday both great games that blew my mind growing up that I can remember spending so many hours playing….Got me thinking I need to buy a ps2 and go back to them….Thanks for sharing your insight and working on such amazing games btw would love to know how all those unlicensed company’s & brands didn’t come after Sony ??? loool

Yes we wanted a new story for the second game. The star was London and the Getaway was going to be a series of stories about it's criminal underworld.

Still think this series was the greatest open world series on the PS2 Console, closely followed by Driver. I'll never understand why it didn't have a first person camera mode in either of the games, that would've made it something really special.

We did have one. Infact you can force the camera into fist person in a car. There are videos online showing you how to do it. We cut this from the cars because the textures did not look great close up.

I still have both The Getaway and The Getaway: Black Monday for my PS2 and still to this day they work, and i played them alot, i think these games were ahead of their time that's why reviews were not good, i think they would be better reviewed if they were made on this generation, on the PS4, more mature and story driven games are been released now a days, i think The Getaway series was one the first cinematic games to come out!!!

There have been some interesting retrospectives on the games. There have been a few that say the games were the genesis for the modern story led games we have today, like Uncharted. I'm glad you enjoyed them.

I worked on the E3 demo. I then left to work on The Getaway Online.

That's great to hear because it was a pain to develop :) I was actually developing The Getaway Online when Sony decided to cancel it. Probably a good thing as it was terrible. But a couple of us pitched the3D pub lobby system to Japan and this eventually became PlayStation Home.

Retro Gamer Boy 😂 I remember PlayStation Home, was a cool concept. How come Sony pulled the plug on The Getaway 3? The tech demo trailer for that looked so cool

@@Simul8Gaming Our studio was also making Eight Days, which was a similar game. They were due to release in the same year. This would have affected sales so they canceled The Getaway and went with Eight Days, which after a long dev cycle in London and Santa Monica, was canceled as well.

I don't know. It would be hard to develop and would be a big investment from Sony. It's not impossible though.

Holy shit this is so cool! This video deserves a lot more views! I remember playing the first Getaway, we didn't understand shit from the story (we didn't speak english back then) but we still loved and we thought it's one of the hardest game on PS2 because of the lack HUD and health packs (yeah we didn't know you can regenerate health either).

😁 that's great to hear. Ya there were some great thing and some bad bits. The team wanted a GPS map on the pause button, so players could plan their route. We also wanted health packs but the game director said no to both 😈 I'm glad you liked the game.

I hope you or someone else makes a sequel or something similar sooner or later. Kinda like what Rollcage devs did with Grip. Teaming up and making a game that looks and works similar.
