Today i take a trip with Lin to look at the ruined houghton house in Ampthill Bedfordshire , built by Mary the countess of Pembroke on land given to her by king James , when Lancelot “ capability “ Brown was given the job of landscaping the park , he decided to keep the ruin of the house as a feature , this is the tale of some of its folklore and history , I hope you enjoy it

Growing up in Ampthill, me and my friends used to regularly cycle up and climb the walls. It’s an atmospheric place that has left a mark on me. These days I enjoy bringing the kids up for a picnic to soak up the atmosphere and history. Thanks for the video

I have a fondness for ruins of all ages, but what a shame that it was intentionally dismantled. I looked up images of it in its prime, and it was a wonder!! Really enjoyed seeing this location and how much you both enjoyed it! Thank you. 😊

Morning Beth , I’m glad you enjoyed it , yes I really should put a picture up of how a ruin looked in its Pomp , Iv deffinately missed a trick there , I did read in one story , that the final owner ( I believe The Duke of Bedford , but it could be wrong 😊) had the house dismantled because of the tragedies in his family he associated with the house , and another story was it was due to land disputes , I think I will have to visit the swan hotel Bedford though to view the grand staircase ! 😊

I visited Houghton House in 1973 while I was at RAF Chicksands. Beautiful Jacobean architecture. Are there sketches that show what the mansion looked like in its heyday?
