The Giant’s Causeway
County Antrim
Northern Ireland
The Giant’s Causeway has been on our radar for a decade - ever since we started travelling back to Ireland to catch up with family. We drove from the midlands up through Cavan and in to County Antrim in the North. Money changes from Euros to British Pounds, and distance changes from metric to standard (kilometres to miles). There isn’t any real indication you have crossed in to the North other than the signage is in miles, and if you stop to purchase anything it cost 30% more than it did in the South.
The cost to get in is 15 pounds, which works out to $25.50 Canadian, or $19.00 American. It may seem steep, and it is costly especially for a family, and we absolutely think this is worth the cost and your time. The visitor centre is nicely laid out with exhibits and merchandise that is tasteful and of good quality. I tend to pick up tea towels and the one I picked up at Giant’s Causeway still looks great four months later of frequent use. You have the option of taking a shuttle bus to the Causeway itself, or enjoy a nice leisurely walk over to the basalt columns. It takes about 20 minutes, which includes stopping for lots of photos.
We hung out on the columns for a good hour just enjoying the sea-spray, the unique formation of this place, and chatting with fellow travellers. The story of Fionn McCool is a lot of fun, and as mentioned in the video the link to Rick Steves video on The Giant’s Causeway can be found here:

There are an estimated 40,000 basalt columns here, and it is an amazing sight to take in. Then, once you have had your fill of the causeway itself take a walk further East along the water and up the side of the hill to a lookout on Fionn McCool’s chimney. Then, back along the cliffside to the stairs up to the headlands where you can walk back to the visitor centre looking down on the Giant’s Causeway from a different angle. On a clear(ish) day you can see Scotland from up here - from down below too if the weather is cooperating. This is one of our favourite walks since we started travelling - definitely in our top 5, which will be a video coming soon. Thanks for checking out our video.
