The Gibson Southern Jumbo and Gibson J45 are the workhorse hallmarks of Gibson's beloved acoustic brand. But is there still viability for Gibson acoustics even though Martin seems to have the market share?

There’s a couple things that separates the j45 and southern construction wise. The bracing on the southern ties into the Kerfing. The j45 bracing stops short. But the biggest difference is the neck. The southern has a modern low oval profile. It’s quite a bit slimmer than the J45 and extremely comfortable. No one talks about these things at all.

It also has a lot more binding, a bone nut and saddle, pins that are closer to the saddle and a much sharper break angle. It's a very different guitar.

Bridge is different on the Southern Jumbo. Check pin location vs J45. Sharper break angle on Southern Jumbo and pins located lower on bridge.

So yesterday after getting a very reasonable offer from a shop to buy my boutique acoustic by Brook I couldn’t help play on a number of Gibson acoustics. Wanted to see if there would be a noticeable difference in a Hummingbird to my wonderful J35? I got real lucky on a second hand 2018 J35 that plays and sounds incredible. The J45 I played and the fearfully expensive J35 1936 era guitars I played were so underwhelming. I guess being a factory that inevitably they gonna be the law of diminishing returns

Southern jumbos are scalloped different and they sound different than a J45. They spend more time voicing them too.

Gibson Montana is awesome

My southern jumbo sucks. Super thin sounding, and compresses at higher volumes. Can't wait to sell it.

I’ve owned high end martins for years but switched to Gibsons over the years. I much prefer their sound to a Martin. Gibson Montana acoustics are the best for my ear-. That’s my opinion after playing both for the past two decades.

It's like choosing between a gorgeous blonde and a gorgeous brunette. There is no wrong choice, only preference.

Such BS. Martin has great harmonics but a tight sound. Gibson sound is more open and bright. The difference between the two due more to scale length for their signaure sound. Appreciate Martins but I don't favor or love Gibsons because they sound like a Martin.

As someone who has many Martins from 42's to 15's and many Gibson's I can tell you Martin "build quality" is NOT better, especially the Gibson's that have been produced in the Montana plant in the last 10-20 years. Put you Martian bias aside dude each brand has it's own tone to offer.

Disagree. Gibson makes a pretty guitar but Martin tone and quality is superior. Of course that’s my opinion but I have 13 guitars. All Gibson and Martin minus one tele.

@@jls882000 I have over 20 guitars, Martins, Gibsons, Collings, Taylor...Superior tone of a Martin? Nope, just different. Excellent to be sure, but my Gibson Dove, Southern Jumbo, And Custom J-45 are all excellent examples of the Gibson tone as well. Gibson Montana are making great guitars, do not be a Martin snob.
