The ‘girls hate hard maths’ myth: How can schools improve mathematics teaching and bust gender stereotypes?
This discussion was part of the Women in STEM Festival at Murray Edwards College, Cambridge: a national conference exploring the barriers and opportunities facing women in science studies and careers.
The panel was sparked by comments made by the headteacher and former government adviser Katharine Birbalsingh, who claimed girls choose not to study physics because they dislike 'hard maths'. Panellists strongly disagreed, and proposed a range of exciting and ambitious ways to ensure girls enjoy and succeed in mathematics and science subjects.
The panel included:
Chair: Professor Holly Krieger, Murray Edwards College Fellow in Mathematics
Shahina Ahmad, Regional Director Executive Principal, Star Academies
Dr Vanessa Ogden, CEO of the Mulberry Schools Trust, London
Dr Ems Lord, Director of NRICH, the University of Cambridge’s multiple award-winning outreach mathematics programme
