The Glaring Problems in Gamecube Controllers

Yo Toph, snap back with falco is real. I legit hit the control stick the opposite direction of where I want my laser to shoot. It’s been more consistent.

Very very minor self explanatory thing you missed: some people remove springs from their L/R buttons to get better power shields, because it basically changes the usual L/R analog inputs to digital

On newer GameCube controllers that have the removable stick boxes you can manually adjust the deadzone or neutral position. The two screws on the back of the motherboard that attach the stick box can be loosened or tightened to adjust it. From my experience from tinkering either screw will adjust the X or Y axis but it's not exact. If you open up the controller menu in Dolphin you can tweak it to a pretty exact degree, hope this helps

Holy hell thank you! I was having issues trying to backair and getting dair and thinking I was going crazy. This also helped fix my pivots, and fixed the problem where I would get a turnaround during my waveshines by accident. So much better thank you

Been modding and customizing controllers for a bit now, absolutely loved the vid Toph. Also for your rumble pack if you never use it but still want the weight you can cut and desolder the cables going to the rumble pack so that you dont need to worry about turning it off

APPRECIATE THIS SO MUCH!!! I've had an Ultimate controller since they came out and it's worked great for the almost 2 years I've been using it. However, recently the pivots have been inconsistent and and the light shields were coming out at L-Cancels. This helped clear that up in less than 5 minutes. You saved me!! Thanks Toph :3

I started melee recently and the losing my wallet thing plagued me for months. I thought I was just bad and then I got a new controller. It was also the most tilting thing. To get a read on the opponent approaching and get punished was infuriating. SO brutal.

43:07 And just like that, I pretty much just fixed my controller today because the one I had with the best stick boxes had one of its potentiometers break off and I didn't think just migrating them to another board was _that_ simple. (Seriously, I have like four other throwaway motherboards but they all have varying amounts of terrible ledgedashing, snapback, and wrong way aerials that I thought were PODE) Bless you, Toph and Reeve. 🙏

Great video! The only missing thing is that you did not talk about trigger plugs. They are in my opinion as important as notches, and much more accessible as they are insanely cheaper. But for the rest, it's perfectly explained, great job!

I was told that a way to avoid snapback is to keep your thumb on the control stick, and instead of letting it snap back (and potentially reversing on you), consciously guide it back to the neutral position. Not sure if that's real or not, but I feel like it's improved my consistency for turnaround-B moves

I actually just ordered an ebay one, and was curious about putting a capacitor in, I'm pretty experienced with circuits, but is that something people can DIY or only trust with controller modder kinda thing. Any advice, or pointing in the direction of good resources would be greatly appreciated

Just some more info on controller snapback and when it stops happening on a new one. I bought a controller about a year and a half ago. It took 400 hours of active play for my snapback to stop happening completely. Some controllers are tougher to break in than others it seems.

On the subject of adding the black triggers to the controller. You're notched up and used to it, so you probably don't wanna mess with it... but a black nunchuk stick would look ultra clean. They are ever so slightly taller than a standard GCN stick, but I don't think I could switch back after changing. The extra height gives me better feel on tilts.

Does anyone know if it's fine to use something like Krytox 105 or 204 to lube triggers? I sometimes get stuck lightshielding indefinitely with my new conch. I assume 105 would be preferable since it's not so thick.

After the boxx, the next thing is to have a controller that has the capability of using a dpad and have the triggers be the different values to run, walk or walk slowly. And what i mostly want now for other smash entries, is yo have the c-stick to he replaced by a circular dpad, so i always get consistent extended diagonal dash cancels in Ultimate. In general, the next step after the boxx should be controllers with digital capabilities, so we can exchange between options whenever we want in the same controller

My controller disconnects randomly when I'm playing, I bought it modded and it had been paracorded, I think it's pins on the board that had been soldered wrong, anyway I can fix it myself?

Falco main here I’m not sure how much actual SnapBack my 2 controllers have, but my main controller which I first got a few months after I started playing melee, it has a very loose stick where if I pull it back all the way and release, it will recoil back and forth multiple times after recording it in slow-mo, and it’s both a blessing and a curse. A loose stick basically makes it to where I don’t have to flick the stick back as hard, but I have to stop the stick with my thumb near the center. My other spare controller, which is superior in basically every way except for the stick, has a tight stick that is *just* loose enough to where it recoils back to the other side, but is too fast to stop mid-way. I installed a SnapBack mod on this one recently, but the change was barely noticeable just because of how bad the stick itself is. I wanna eventually replace the stick on this controller and use it full-time, but for now I have to use the other one because of it’s looser stick being easier to manage, along with me being used to it. So anyways, GameCube controllers are basically for masochists, including me.

The turn around double laser happens to me so often. I thought I was just fucking up, but I wonder if my controller has snap back issues

I opened my shitty bootleg GC controller when its stick started to loosen up, and succesfully diagnosed the issue with no prior experience doing these kind of stuff, such a fun moment and good feeling ! (the stickboxes were made of shitty plastic that wore down with usage, like really ultra shitty plastic lol, I used these controllers (had 2 for 20 bucks) for like 3 weeks and the sticks were just unusable after that. Fortunately, the controllers are og GC controller shell reproductions so I can still use that to make a fancy looking shell to put on my actual new GC controller from the ultimate special pack without butchering that sweet print)

I have never had a problem with 3rd party cast resin sticks or buttons (maybe some minor sanding needed to get right) BUT I have had issues with casted shells. Also if anyone knows anyone who sells good thumbsticks in bulk lmk.

vertical snapback is so horrible for mario 64 because after getting a star, when you scroll down to "continue without saving" it can snap back up to "save and quit" and instantly kill the run 💀

my current problem is that i have 2 gamecube controllers; both of them originals, that came with my PAL gamecube. now my L button on controller #1 and my R button on controller #2 is broken. i dont get satisfaction with melee tech, i mostly play ultimate, where i use L to shield, Z to grab and R to jump. so now i get the choice between no shield or no jump :(

I'd like to comment that the reason the Goomwave dashes back incidentally is because of the changes made via UCF. If every controller was a Goomwave, that function of UCF would not be necessary.

I was browsing ebay last night and saw terms like OEM and DOL-003 and didnt know what i was getting into. One thing that the video doesn't cover that I'd like to know: if you DO buy a goomwave, will that be good forever? aka, you can recalibrate your notches easily when they get fucked up, the capacitor will work forever, the stickbox will correctly read pivots etc? I see top players often complaining about their controller even after buying a nez controller. Will goomwaves stay good forever? it's quite a lot of investment for a controller, especially imported to the uk

Got 4 old GameCube controllers and only one don’t have snapback

Gc controllers are well built. Out of that gen, they were the easiest controllers to dismantle. A close 2nd are dreamcast pads. Then, the trickiest pads to get back together would be the Dualshock 2, which is a breeze compared to a dualshock 1.
