any art deco or second wave chicago architecture school building looks much better and timeless, you can tell the new one WTC is a 2000s atrocity, the first design wasn't so bad but after 2005 the incredible blandness of neo-modernist 2010s/2020s era architecture and interior design killed all the old styles and made everything uglier and grayer

This concept of rebuilding the Twin Towers as they were would have probably ended up looking just like this in my honest opinion, and it fits with the Freedom Tower's design already having an all-glass façade. Times have changed and having narrow slits for windows is so passé.

It's kinda interesting that you're dedicating these last few videos on hypothetical modern towers. I was just imagining what they would have been like had they went for the same aesthetic as today's One WTC. I even did a mockup, and would show it to you if there was a way to send it over. As for a way to make these new towers more safe, one thing could be to replace the open floor plan for something like the Sears Willis Tower with a 3 by 3 type floor plan. It would also make them easier to convert into hotel rooms if necessary. As for why One WTC doesn't have tridents, it's because the NYPD wanted a concrete barrier at the base for safety reasons. As for seeing something like the modernized twin towers appear IRL, one could only guess a different skyscraper complex picks up a similar design. Great video!

I was fortunate enough to have visited NY in late summer 98 and even more fortunate enough to have visited the old Twin Towers of the WTC in that same year. Amazing buildings they were too regardless of what people say. Beautiful city too, New York. Your videos are engrossing and I absolutely love watching them. Sadly theres only so many hours in a day mate, and here in West London I've got plenty on my plate yet I still feel compelled to immediately check your videos out bro lol Love your channel btw - awesome stuff DG.

A friend recently told me about an article he saw in B1M, an architect's magazine. A group of people in NYC want the Twin Towers back. Do you remember when Donald Trump hired Kenneth Gardner to rebuild the Twin Towers AT HIS OWN EXPENSE? I hope you show this to him. I think he'd like it. This design is GEORGEOUS. I loved the windows and columns in the original Twin Towers. People felt more secure with them.

I couldn't agree more with your perspective on the rebuilding of the World Trade Center. The updated glass concept truly is elegant and, in my opinion, would have been a powerful symbol, sending a resilient message back to those who attacked the original towers. It's a way of saying we can rebuild and emerge even stronger. Your consideration of the fear people might have had working in buildings identical to the ones that were tragically brought down is a valid point. The world had changed by the time the original lot was cleaned up, and many companies had shifted their operations elsewhere. The demand for that specific type of office space might have indeed been non-existent, making the updated design not only symbolic but also impractical. The compromise of the Freedom Tower, along with the memorial and pool, strikes a balance between acknowledging the changed landscape and paying a heartfelt tribute to the lives lost on 9/11. It's a thoughtful approach that encompasses both the practicalities of the modern world and the emotional significance of the site. The complexities involved in rebuilding such an iconic location are vast, and your insights shed light on the delicate considerations that went into the final decisions. The result is not only a remarkable architectural achievement but also a poignant memorial that stands as a testament to resilience and remembrance.

Windows of the World Trade Center looked like narrow slits from a distance, however it can be deceiving and hard to appreciate the titanic scale of the Twin Towers from looking at exterior shots. Look at photos of the _Windows on the World_ restaurant on floors 106-107 of the North Tower; the windows were floor-to-ceiling and wider than the average person, with lots of natural light. In fact rather than narrow slit windows in a steel exterior, it would be more accurate to say the exterior walls consisted mostly of glass windows, with narrow steel columns separating them. Actually the interior part of the observation center (whence one climbed to the outdoor rooftop deck) on the 107th floor of the South Tower had a step down to seating along the exterior walls to allow people to enjoy view out of the full-length windows-which, again, were wider (and taller) than the average person. The windows may have been smaller on other floors of the Twin Towers, but even looking at interior office floor photos, the width of the transparent glass windows was at least as wide as the opaque wall between each window, on all four sides of the open floor plan; it's not true to say that the old WTC consisted of mostly dark solid walls with only narrow slits of natural light.

I’m a tad biased with anything that was built after 9/11. Starting when I was 12 yrs old I would take part of my allowance and part of what I earned from my 2 newspaper routes. I would, every week. Sneak down to the Twin Towers. Taking Metro North from White plains to Grand Central. Which I would hit up a street corner Magazine Stand while making my way to the Twin Towers. Not once did I ever read any of the magazines I bought at the Towers. As I was in such awe and amazement of what our country could build. And once a month I would buy a ticket to the observation deck. Mind you my ticket to the top was less than $10 back then and my Metro North ticket round trip was $6. When I was in the city on 9/11. Seeing the towers fall while we were riding the line that hugs the Hudson River . I knew that no matter what was built. It would never please everyone, including me. I can only imagine how stressful it was for everyone involved in rebuilding. I do have to say the hugest disappointment was the 9/11 light that shine a mile into the night sky once a year. Was not incorporated in the middle of the falls of the pool where both Towers once stood.. and the current placement of these lights to remember who and what our country lost. Was the most disrespectful choice made to those lost. And it was the easiest thing that would have been done. Thank you for creating ur posts on the Towers site. And mean no disrespect towards anyone. Night

What made the old twin towers so iconic was, that one building on it's own didn't have a spectacular design (at least not visible from the distance)..... but together with a twin standing next to it, the design was perfect. That's why twins of the new WTC (or like 1:22) wouldn't work.

I don't live in New York, and I don't know if this is even technically possible, but here's my thought. Why not rebuild the original towers (glass or otherwise) where the memorial is now? If the pools are exactly the same size as the footprint of the old towers, couldn't you just build new towers there? Rebuilding the towers would be a better way to honor those who died than those creepy depressing pools. And with regard to new towers giving people PTSD. As time passes I see this as being a lot less of a problem. 40 years from now, most people who lived through 9/11 will be gone or will be elderly, and they wouldn't be traumatized by seeing the towers return. I really hope this happens eventually, I feel like it would give Americans a symbolic boost of confidence and pride. A return to power, etc.

I think this concept is nice in its own way, but my favorite concept for new twin towers would still have to be the initial plan by Foster and Partners. Those weren't just exact replicas, but they still did have interior silhouettes that, in certain lighting conditions, give off faint reminders of the original towers.

The one World Trade Center was built entirely different, since it is mostly glass exterior with a sort of diamond shape all around, they’d have to tear it down just to rebuild both of those towers, if not just build a second freedom tower yk? It would be very hard and too expensive to do
@GurHaenouasHazourem
@GurHaenouasHazourem 5 месяцев назад
@@radioactivemoose05 What I imagined is that one day the edge of the first floors, that is interrupted by the diagonal "shaving" from the top, could be continued all the way to the top, making a perfectly square building again, with hte same footprint as it has now, filling up the "shavings" that the new One WTC has. This filling could look more like the original buildings, without glass, that looked like some stone towers from antiquity from afar under the yellow sunset light.

Well if the 'freedom tower' is too complex, and no wrong in that, than they should just man up and rebuild the towers as they were. Freedom tower can be, along with the new 3, 4, 7 and maybe 2, what we did after 9/11. But now it's time. Better, stronger, I would vote for another 1 or 2 cores perimeters surrounding the inner core structure, and than build the damn towers back as they were. They could build them on the same grounds as they originally were and move the memorials, and I really like the glass towers idea as well.

If I had the money and influence I would rebuild not only the twin towers but other lost buildings of NYC. Like the Singer building and others, somewhere around the upper east side of Manhattan. The twin towers would be at least 2,001 feet high and would look more castle like. With the north tower being topped with a massive spire similar to the one at the Empire State Building. My favorite hypothetical twin towers design in this video is the glass version of the twin towers! In second place, I'd pick the twin freedom tower! I'm all for a twin freedom tower pararell to the other one but with no antenna and an outdoor observation deck!! I am all for that since we already got the freedom tower. I wonder what it would be like if the exterior of the freedom tower was sort of reshaped like a more square shape like the twin towers but keep the blue mirror glass. I don't think that's possible because it's already built the way it is. I am certainly all for a twin freedom tower!!

@jarrodbushyhead6928 Yes, One World Trade Center became it's official name starting back in 2009. This is what I got from a Google search: On March 26, 2009, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) confirmed that the building would be officially known by its legal name of "One World Trade Center", rather than its colloquial name of "Freedom Tower". The building has 94 stories, with the top floor numbered 104. Besides, it's not illegal to give something or someone a nickname. It's just like with the city Los Angeles. It has its famous nicknames like LA, Hollywood, Tinseltown, City of the Angels, etc.. They're all informal names, but they are popular nicknames used to refer to the same city.

I think the twin towers original facade was still modern, I just think the windows could’ve been wider. The buildings did bring a decent about of natural light especially on the observatory and windows on the world restaurant, I’ve been in both buildings to know that. Glass towers are boring, nothing special we have way too many of them already. 1. instead of 18 inch windows, 2 feet like on the observatory floors and windows on the world. Similar to 3 wtc in china which is heavily inspired by the twin towers. 2. Between the columns have reflective glass. 3. The upper columns have reflective chrome instead of just the tridents at the lobby level. 4. Both towers be 1776 feet at roof height. 5. All the safety/structural improvements of the current 1 world trade including denser steel perimeter columns.

There are many examples around the world of more complex twin buildings like the Petronas twin towers working out fine. Also, 1 WTC is not a complex design to begin with. It's more complex than the OG twin towers but almost all buildings are.

now they look great and all but just looking at the pictures, those towers wouldnt work with this design. my reason is, since the facade is made of glass entirely and the old facade of the towers had an important role by carrying the structure with the core, then i dont see a way of how this would work. it would only work if we had either the OG Facade moved a bit inwards and covered in glass, or we have an inner row of pillars but that wouldnt work or look good either, expecially in the lobby.

The more I think about your comment the more I agree. And no ones considered or wondered.. Would an exact replica of the twin towers actually provoke a terrorist attack on them? Being recreations I could forsee the future terrorist mentality to perceive newly recreated twin towers as some form of challenge. Seeing them as a way to delete their "win" or achievement in knocking down the first set. I believe they would probably more likely to become a target of such an attack over just the one freedom tower. I think the idea of no one wanting to have office permanent office space in them being would play into the fear that terrorists would want to knock them down again yet again someday, as some kind of sick poignant message.

@@travisjohnson622 I agree 100%. Rebuilding an exact replica of the 1973-2001 era World Trade Center would give a lot of people in New York serious PTSD and naturally they'd probably be targeted again given their history. It's hard to picture anyone wanting to rent space or be up high in either of those buildings knowing what previously happened there. It's a wound and stigma from the past that would never go away. At least with the new Freedom Tower it represents a fresh start and new beginning and it also doesn't feel as likely to be targeted since it doesn't get anywhere near the same level of attention or notoriety as the old twins got. When Freedom Tower opened it got a little bit of coverage but it came and went pretty quickly but a reopening of the old 1973-2001 would've naturally caused a bigger and longer media spectacle making it a lot more likely to be targeted again.

@@travisjohnson622 well that's incredibly unlikely... the entire terrorist organisation that destroyed the twin towers has been eradicated, and replaced with 5 more. The response was to triple airplane security and enact a revenge that has resulted in an endless war with continuous suffering in the Middle East. You really shouldn't think of terrorists as a single mind determined to prove a point. Was all of America determined to destroy the eastern world? No but a small minority did, creating a war thats literally caused 100 times the suffering 911 did. End even the side that was against that war has basically allowed this to continue for 20yrs since! Humans dont turn to religious extremism because their lives are good... The most sick thing that's happened is that America has moved on without ever really asking why, becoming indifferent to the larger suffering in the world. The reason I suggested not building the twin towers again was empathy; the people in New York who survived dont want to see their nightmare brought back to life as a twisted version of itself. But you should probably empathise more with humans in general.

Rebuilding them, while good on paper, does have some holes. 1. How do you get tenants to move into the rebuilt WTC? In most of the ideas I’ve seen, they look externally identical. How the hell can you convince someone to move into a building that nowadays is only associated with death and destruction? 2. What would the people who lost loved ones in the original WTC think of them? Bottom line, they should be the final authority on what gets built and what doesn’t, and I doubt they’d be very welcoming towards recreations of the vessels their loved ones were trapped in. But there are some positives: 1. It sends a strong message that if someone knocks the US down, they’ll bounce back better than before. 2. It could be a good opportunity to rethink how the towers were built.

@@moreedcola6837 I think building twin Freedom Towers would've been the perfect compromise. It would honor the memory and legacy of the originals while giving the new twins a chance to still have their own identity going forward. Building a set of new age twins would've represented us coming back strong with something familiar but a modern, stronger, and improved version of what used to be there.

Do a Video on how often the Towers and Antenna got struck by Lightning. On another Note I am very disappointed in what they have done with the WTC complex. I dont like the Freedom Tower and dont care for the Memorial either.

They seriously need to build a second tower next to that gorgeous tower, its an architectural beauty and a second one will compliment it and complete teh NYC skylien imho. I want to see that happen as I'm sure billions of people do worldwide. One tower is not enough, it NEEDS a sister tower '{>_

yeah nah this ugly neo-modernist architecture will be absolutely hated in about 20 years and the architecture that has been slowly being lost will finally have a chance to be preserved

This is not a good idea, not everything needs to be the same neo-modernist look, every building looks like this now, the creative glass of the 60s and 70s is gone, this architectural style is gonna age terribly, this neo-modernist drive to eradicate the 1960s and 1970s architectural history because its "dated" is a tragedy, this follows a trend of the disregard of the preservation of major modern architetural pieces where even the most important modern buildings don't get preserved for being "dated", this denies historical preservation and this video and the whole "neo-modernist" architectural movement is harmful, it denies history the same way 60s and 70s buildings replaced 1800s era architecture, lets not repeat the same mistake again please? every building in the 60s or 70s refurbished to be "updated" to the 21st century will be restored in about 50 years, gen z does not like neo-modernist architecture nearly as much, even original modernism had lots of things going for it, neo modernism feels like everything good about modern architecture was eradicated leaving bland, uninteresting buildings, this look is also instantly dated to the 2020s atleast the interior design has a frutiger aero vibe, no ugly white on black minimalism. minimalism can be done well and it can be done boring. 2020s architecture is boring

Why would they rebuild the twin towers just like the originals with the open floor space? The open floor space and core all in the middle is the main reason the towers fell. Absolutely not a good idea. However, I could see another freedom tower being built as a twin, because the infrastructure and way the freedom tower is built is much much sturdier, safer , stronger and not built with the core and elevators and stair cases totally in the middle, which was a bad idea to begin with.

I can’t believe out of all those thousands of people working high up in the towers, didn’t have even ONE parachute 🪂.

Hindsight is a great thing Jimmy. No one knew that was going to happen, so who would think they need a parachute ?... That idea is preposterous.

@@victorpeirce4753 If i worked in a 1500 ft tall building near the top, I would of certainly had an emergency parachute. It’s common sense, not preposterous. People get trapped in high rise fires and have to jump to there deaths all the time.
