The song was long because everybody danced a lot back then, I remember we all did a dance called the bus stop where a group danced in sync .

It's mind-blowing how many times this song has been sampled by so many artists.

That beat is the historic "funky drummer" beat that permeates so much soul, R & B, funk..."On the one".

The BIG PAYBACK! Mr. James Brown and The J.B.'s. Had the privilege to see James in concert twice, both were high energy, full on SHOWS! Before the first show my friends were taking bets on how many and how soon the capes would come out. We were ALL wrong. FIRST song, Purple cape with White interior, and 20,000 sequins, stunning. Four more capes before the show was over, red, gold, black, name a color. James Brown was in his 60's and 70's during these shows, and he had as much energy as someone half his age. AMAZING. RIP to The Godfather.

The Capel usually applied when he saying please please please through the years. In later years, he would sing living in America and bend over and they would bring out and put the cape on him.

You got James Brown!!! Omg this is one of my favorite songs. I’ll never switch channels if it comes on. Gotta let it play. Sold me out! For chicken change!! Got a friend who stabs him in the back for his money and his girl. Damn, time for the big payback!! Owen Wilson was in a movie with Jackie Chan for got which one and he stole the line ‘I may not know Ka-Rate but I know Ka-Razy!’ One of my other favs is ‘Out of Sight’. The lyrics are great. It’s a tiny little song that makes me smile. It’s about one of his backup singers he dated who had her own hit song ‘slip in mules’ about some shoes. He says ‘you got your high heel slippers, and your slip in mules. You’re more than alright, you’re out of sight.’

The song is not just about the story as it the groove behind it; the point was to get people dancing…that’s what Funk does. That was the James’s band the JBs featuring Fred Wesley on horns jamming.

1973. "Payback" was sampled so much it was sampled into a pulp fiction style crime thriller starring Mel Gibson in 1999. The seven minute album track was for dancing more so. There was a three minute "Part 1" version for the radio and such. Hypnotic. It sounds like a loop but for the subtleties in the bars. The other extended tracks on the album feature organ, horn and guitar solos.

You probably have, but if not, definitely check out some live James Brown performances, even on your own. His performance style influenced so many artists, including Prince and Michael Jackson, to name the heavy weights. Prince especially moved a lot like him and used the funky back beats a lot and some of his vocal delivery style in his live shows. And of course his music and vocals influenced all the British Invasion groups, including The Beatles and Rolling Stones, among many more.

That's not one of my favorite JB songs, but I do hope you keep listening to more of him. I like him more a little earlier, so I recommend either "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" or "I Got You (I Feel Good)" for your next JB song. Not as funky as "The Payback", but still funky, and better melodically.

Yeah, this was one of his biggest hits. It went up to number one on the soul chart went up to number 26 on the pop chart and it sold over 1 million copies and so did the album. James Brown has been my favorite artist since I was 12 back in 1968. I saw him about 100 times in concert, I met him a few times. I have all of his albums and 45s. A little background about the album the Payback. He did a soundtrack for the movie, Black Cesar in 1973 and that was supposed to be the follow up soundtrack for the next movie and it got rejected for whatever reason of time so I became one of his biggest albums of all time. Many critics and fans consider the Payback album to be his most cohesive album because he was more of a singles artist than an album artist.

I agree with your sentiments about sampling. I grew up with lots of influences even going back hundreds of years via classical piano lessons when I was a kid. It's sure open my eyes to things that last beyond generations. James Brown was something else. But I like your take on that.

Since you mentioned the song "it's a Man's World" do yourself a favor, look up Seal, doing the cover, at Abbey Road studios..has band, strings, back up vocals, and anyone doubt Seal can bring it, check out that version at Abbey Road Studios, ya know the home of the Beatles. And if you would, please react to it, I can only pay you with Love, but regardless check it out my friend.

Mick Jagger produced the outstanding James autobiographical film "Get Up" with the equally outstanding Chadwick Boseman. I was worried tho'. Shouldn't have been. Excellent movie...just FULL OF MUSIC. Boseman really nailed it.
@PaulDA2000
@PaulDA2000 9 месяцев назад
James Brown is has been my favorite artist since 1968 and I completely disagree with you. That movie with Chadwick Boseman was just horrible. 😮 Chadwick did what he could do with it, but he was horribly misscast James Brown was not that tall or slim, and they started out the movie with arguably the worst part of his life. They had the band talking to him like the band would never talk to him. They had Maceo fat. Maceo was never fat. They didn’t even mention Danny Ray. In the movie went back-and-forth from the past to the present it was just terrible. That’s why it bombed.

I don’t think you understand much about Mr. Brown. His best songs are the songs that are seven minutes or eight minutes or even 10 or 11 minutes that’s the essence of Funk.

@@watchbizmatik who said anything about worshiping him? I just find it amusing when somebody tells a successful author, be it a song or novel or even a painting, how they should have done things. Yes, you have the right to react how ever you want to and I have the right to react to your reaction. No problem, peace out.

@WatchBizMatik You are entitled to your opinion....however I just don't think your generation and younger know just how great this man was....he WAS the Michael Jackson of the 60s and early 70s....he was a POWERHOUSE performer that left everything out there on stage This man invented Funk....before James nobody had ever heard music and beats like his.....this man influenced MJ,Prince, and a generation of folks who copied his dance moves....2 decades later in the 80s when hip-hop began James Brown beats were the most sampled and he is the most sampled artist of all time I watch a lot of reactors and it seems that whenever they do James Brown reaction they most show clips of the older JB.....there are plenty of clips of him performing when he was young....this man was moon walking forward, backwards, and on one foot,doing splits, and coming up catching the mic....also another misconception about JB is that he can't sing he just screams....this man started out singing ballards....he could sing his ass off One more thing you mentioned how long song was.....this is 1973 just before the beginning of Disco....songs were usually 3 minutes long for radio....James made extended songs over that 3 min mark and people loved it ....another thing reactors need to understand is when a song was made people were hearing a new sound....so 50 ys later it might not sound new to you ....but anyways love your channel
