Not many filmmakers love a city as much as Scorsese loves New York. To make a movie about such a weird time period is a labor of love.

This movie was "loosely" based off of historical events. There are inaccuracies in the time-line of events, and some embellishments were made for theatrical purposes. Still, this movie was incredible. Also, there was a surge of Irish immigrants to the United States due to the multiple famines in Ireland.

The book itself was a poorly edited mess, based on largely urban myths, that Scorsese was able to build into a great fantasy.

There were some true historical aspects in this movie. There were gangs called the Dead Rabbits, Plug Uglies, 40 thieves, Bowery Boys etc, but they were in different decades. There really was a Bill "the butcher " Cutting who was killed by a rival gang leader in 1855. A riot actually happened in NYC during the Civil War in 1864.

I loved the ending of this. All the people in the points, the gangs, their rivalries were everything. They didn't even stop to think about the massive Civil War raging in the rest of America, then the Draft Riots tore New York apart, and ended all their rivalries at the point of Federal guns.

I think you guys meant the Revolutionary War when you were talking about the red coats vs. the yankees. That was the fight between the British and Americans and fought for America to gain independence from Britain. The war referenced in the movie was the Civil War which was between the northern states and the southern states in the US and basically fought over the south wanting to preserve slavery. Great reaction though!
@IsraelShekelberg
@IsraelShekelberg 4 месяца назад
The American Civil War was Americans against Americans 1861-1865. (Blue Army for the US, grey or grayish for the Southern Confederacy.) There were Irish immigrants on both sides. The New York Draft Riots occurred in the middle, 1863.

Great reaction guys! I had the chance to visit the set in 2002 and everything was still there except of course the exploded things. Dante Ferretti made an incredible work building the entire Five Points in Rome at Cinecittà Studios. I remember the ships., the church, the docks... Amazing experience. Scorsese made a masterpiece. Daniel Day Lewis was so in the character that he called Liam Neeson "Priest" all the time with an angry voice.

I had read that this movie was supposed to be released in the autumn of 2001. After 9/11, there was debate in the studio to cut the World Trade Center out of the end of the movie. Scorsese wanted it to stay. The movie got pushed back to 2002 to put a little distance from film's release and the terrorist attack.

You got the money side of things right. If you have chickens but want to trade for shoes, and I want chickens but only have potatoes to trade....that's where 'money' comes in. People learn that potatoes, shoes and chickens are each worth a certain value of 'money'. That system worked for thousands of years because 'money' was gold and silver, as they are rare metals that have to be mined and refined and which didn't corrode or decay. Then the bankers and governments got involved by producing a note from a bank which was supposed to represent gold or silver (a Bank Note), and over time removed any ties the 'paper money' had to anything of real value. Now a 'bank note' is really just a worthless piece of paper, a debt note and IOU to an unpayable debt.

You mentioned the British redcoats; that's whom the American colonists were fighting in the revolution, not in the civil war, around ninety years later. The civil war began because the south feared that northern lawmakers and the newly elected President Lincoln were going to find a way to outlaw slavery, which the north had long since ceased practicing but without which the southern economy would collapse. So most of the slaveholding states announced that they were seceding from the United States to form their own country, and the north did not accept this secession as valid, and the two sides fought over whether the south must stay in the union or not. Of course the result was that the south was defeated, slavery was abolished, and the southern economy suffered far worse than it ever would have if abolition had come without war. Until about fifteen or twenty years ago, the number of Americans killed in the civil war exceeded the number killed in all other wars in American history combined.

In the first big battle, it looks like dozens fell - Bill himself looks like he killed half a dozen. Then, when they disperse, there's like, two bodies in the snow. Are we to assume that they hauled away their dead comrades?
@DaemonKeido

It makes sense that they would allow both sides to collect their honoured dead. Why those particular bodies were left behind, who can say?

I enjoyed the casual discussion at the end about a tricky topic - political organization. In this global political climate, the thing I hold onto as an american is thinking in the extreme -- what would a 2024 society look like without any form of organized government? There's that tribe off the coast of India called the sentinelese and I wonder how group decisions are made -- and that's not even a group of people larger than what could be considered a tribe. In any living situation outside of a true native tribe, you're going to have farming and once you have farming, you start having people living in one place for a long time. You get where this is going....basically, I think government is a human inevitability. Left to ourselves, in a natural disaster (humans are born with zero armor and no weapons, plus we die to exposure pretty easily -- I think that's fair to call nature a kind of permanent disaster for humans, naked in the woods without anything other than what god gave them) -- I think we're always going to tend towards cooperation and collaboration to make our situation better. The question is just how we do that. And our best, most favorite, classic fallback? Have someone do all it for us. It's the best of all words, really. You don't have to think about politics, and they get to handle problems of state. If you look all human history, kings, queens, and other monarchies or empires is the natural state of human political desire, it seems. Thousands of years, and the centuries where this type of government DOESN'T exist are really, really rare and notable. For instance, how many centuries do we have globally without a monarch at all? No king? I've never heard of it. It's always a novelty when people do something different. Democracy beta launched in Athens, and was viewed exactly as that until the 1500s -- a failed experiment. A hippy dream. Communism is brand new, and was only ever "attempted" in the former USSR, China, Cuba and a few other places. I stress the "attempt" part, because Marx's writing views communism more as a natural extension of industrialization. The argument is that with all these cool steam machines, the idea of toiling for labor is only for exploitation (Why do I need to be here at the factory -- didn't you say the machine was doing it?), since the material means of making basic goods (boring, common things we all need) has been worked out by industrialization. With AI, and particularly an AGI, I see his predictions of humans being able to spend time maximizing personal development and a return to a trade economy coming true once basic services are solved by AI. In that sense, the theories of Marx would still apply, and a historian could accurately describe the period as marxist, or economic system as marxist.

Boss Tweed & William Cutting were real people. Actually, we learn about William Tweed in highschool history class. The draft riots at the end were real, the nativist "know-nothing" political party was real. The anti-Irish stuff was all real, there were even "N.I.N.A." signs wherever people were hiring workers (No Irish Need Apply, meaning they wouldn't hire Irish people.) I really love this movie. Probably my 2nd favorite Scorcese film after Goodfellas.
@richardzinns5676
@richardzinns5676 4 месяца назад
Actually, Bill Cutting was not a real person but was loosely inspired by a real person (also named Bill and also a butcher) who did not live in the Five Points, but whose career (a little earlier than when the movie takes place) in other respects parallels that of the fictional Cutting. The unsuccessful attempt to murder Cutting at the play is based, again loosely, on the actual murder of the man on whom Cutting is based.

Sorry *Marian,* your explanation of the *Civil War* was _waaaaayyyy_ off. You were describing elements found in _the Revolutionary War_ (The War for Independence), but even that you got _waaaayyy_ wrong. However, most Americans are known for being woefully ignorant when it comes to the rest of the world. 😏 In a nutshell, the *Civil War* was the northern states versus the southern states in America, from 1861-1865. Whereas the _Redcoats_ (the British) fought the colonies from 1775-1783, over the independence of the colonies. The reasons for the *Civil War* were disagreements over slavery, states rights (states vs. federal rights), the election of Abraham Lincoln, and the economy. Anyway, rather than write a book here, I suppose you could look it up yourself now. Wonderful reaction, as always. May I recommend… ● *Spy Game* (2001) with *Brad Pitt* and *Robert Redford.* ● *The Mexican* (2001), starring _Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts_ and _James Gandolfini._ ● *_The Fisher King_* (1991) Dir. by Terry Gilliam, with _Robin Williams_ & _Jeff Bridges._ ● *_Silverado_* (1985). A *fun* western with _Scott Glenn, Danny Glover, John Cleese, Kevin Costner, Jeff Goldblum,_ and more. Written and directed by *_Lawrence Kasdan,_* co-writer of the _Star Wars_ films _The Empire Strikes Back_ (1980), _Return of the Jedi_ (1983), and _The Force Awakens_ (2015). He also co-wrote _Raiders of the Lost Ark_ (1981). Be well! 🙋🏼‍♂️
